TikTok quietly unveils a search widget for iPhone users
TikTok makes searching easier than ever before.
TikTok’s search widget is now available for iPhone users, giving you a shortcut to its search. So, instead of opening the app and then clicking the search button, when you tap the widget you’re automatically brought to TikTok’s search screen. It saves you 5 seconds max but suggests that the platform is doubling down on its status as a search engine. Members of Gen Z told Mashable they use TikTok to find recipes, travel recommendations, and workouts.
TikTok hinted at its desire to be recognized as a search engine with an ad ran in the UK earlier this year that featured the slogan, “Search it with TikTok.” And now with its quiet rollout, TikTok is directly competing with Google’s own search widget.
TikTok’s emphasis on search comes after Google’s Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president in charge of Google Search, shared that a study conducted by the company last summer found that 40% of 18 to 24-year-olds in the US use TikTok or Instagram to search for lunch spots instead of Google Search.
TikTok is also a place where people search for news. A survey conducted last summer by Ofcom found that TikTok was the fasted growing news source among UK adults. But research conducted by News Guard late last year found that TikTok’s search suggests misinformation almost 20 percent of the time. To be taken seriously as a search engine TikTok needs to address its rampant misinformation problem.
Royal Mail unveils latest stamps to celebrate legendary BBC comedy
ROYAL Mail has come up with a cunning plan — to celebrate TV comedy Blackadder’s 40th anniversary with a set of stamps.
Eight of them capture moments from the four classic series, from medieval England to the World War One trenches.
The stamps feature some of the show’s best-loved characters, played by stars including Rowan Atkinson, Sir Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Tim McInnerny, Miranda Richardson, Brian Blessed and the late Patsy Byrne.
Launched in 1983 by writer Richard Curtis and star Atkinson, with the assistance of BBC producer John Lloyd and co-author Ben Elton, the show is often cited as one of the best British sitcoms of all time.
Curtis said: “We’re very amused and delighted. It’s a great relief for Blackadder to have his head on a stamp, instead of on a stake.”
Producer Lloyd added: “The entire team behind Britain’s leading situation tragedy is deeply honoured by Royal Mail’s magnificent stamps of approval.
“In the words of General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett, VC KCB: ‘Let’s give them a damn good licking!’”
David Gold, director of external affairs and policy at Royal Mail, said: “The epic saga of Blackadder spans six centuries of British history and four decades of British television and is still loved and revered by audiences old and new.
“We are delighted to mark the 40th anniversary of Blackadder with a set of special stamps.”
A presentation pack of all 12 stamps will cost £19.60.

Google unveils AI updates for Workspace collaboration suite
At its annual I/O conference, Google today announced a number of AI-infused upgrades to its Workspace suite of office tools and applications for business teams to use in collaborating on projects.
As a competitor to Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant, Google announced Duet AI, which offers a number of generative AI tools for Google’s productivity apps within Workspace. Duet AI offers assistance in writing text in Google Docs and Gmail, as well as help with image generation for Slides, a PowerPoint-like slide presentation program. Duet AI can also summarize conversations on Google Meet, a video conferencing service.
Google Unveils Pixel 7a With Tensor G2, 90Hz Display and 64MP Camera
Another major upgrade is the switch to the Tensor G2 chipset, which is now paired with 8GB of LPDDR RAM (up from 6GB on the 6a) and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage. This is the same configuration as the Pixel 7, so the a-phone will be just as fast at the various computational tasks. Also, note that Google is promising 5 years of security updates. Among them is the Super Res Zoom (up to 8x), which is enabled by the new 64MP camera (up from 12MP). The ultra wide camera has a 13MP sensor and a f/2.2 lens that is blessed with Dual Pixel autofocus. The front-facing camera was also bumped up to 13MP with a fixed-focus lens (f/2.2). The rear camera can record 5K video at up to 60fps, the front one tops out at 4K at 30fps.
The Pixel 7a supports sub-6GHz and mmWave flavors of 5G, though only models for select regions will have mmWave enabled. This is a dual-SIM device with one physical nano-SIM and one eSIM. The 7a is powered by a 4,385mAh battery that supports up to 18W wired charging and for the first time on an a-phone wireless charging is available too — also at 18W. Note that the port on the bottom is USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, but the retail box comes only with a USB C-to-C cable with USB 2.0 wiring (and you have to supply your own charger). You can order the Pixel 7a via the Google Store.

AI startup Anthropic unveils moral principles behind chatbot Claude
Alphabet-backed AI startup Anthropic has disclosed the set of value guidelines that has been used to train its ChatGPT rival, Claude, in the wake of concerns about incorrect and biased information being being given to users of generative AI programs.
Founded by former senior members of Microsoft-backed OpenAI in 2021, Anthropic made the decision to train its Claude on constitutional AI, a system that uses a “set of principles to make judgments about outputs,” which helps Claude to “avoid toxic or discriminatory outputs” such as helping a human engage in illegal or unethical activities, according to a blog Anthropic posted this week. Anthropic says this has enabled it to broadly create an AI system that is “helpful, honest, and harmless.”
