Google I/O and the curious case of the missing Android version
With Google’s I/O announcement expo now firmly in the rearview mirror, it’s time for us to enter the inevitable next phase of any tech-tinted revelation — and that’s the careful contemplation of everything we’ve just experienced.
It’s my favorite phase of all, personally, as it lets us really dive in and analyze everything with a fine-toothed comb to uncover all the subtle significance that isn’t always apparent on the surface.
And this year, my goodness, is there some splendid stuff to pore over.
Specific to the realm of Android, the sharp-eyed gumshoes over at 9to5Google noticed that this year’s under-development new Android version, Android 14, was mentioned by name only one time during the entire 2,000-hour Google I/O keynote.

You Can Now Play A Game Boy Version Of Halo: Combat Evolved
An indie studio called Crusader Games has decided to make a Game Boy-like version of Halo: Combat Evolved. However, instead of calling it Halo Combat Evolved, the studio decided to have fun with it and call it Halo: Combat Devolved.
The game was made using software called GB Studio. The official website describes the software as “a quick and easy to use drag and drop retro game creator for your favorite handheld video game system.” Halo: Combat Devolved can be played on a Game Boy Color, Analogue, or straight from your web browser.
You’ll need to visit their website to play this unofficial version of Halo. A message from the developers can be found on their website, reading, “As a longtime fan of Halo: Combat Evolved, I’m creating a faithful demake for the Game Boy Color using GB Studio.” Currently, the only playable level is the Pillar of Autumn, but Crusader Games has stated that it “plans to continue adding levels to the project as time allows.”

Outer Wilds fan makes a functional version of the alien translator
The enigmatic system of Outer Wilds is packed with scary things you wouldn’t want running around in real life: spine-tingling cosmic anglerfish, endless time loops, and a bunch of existential dread. (Oh, wait a minute.) Although, the spacefaring adventure has at least one tool that would be handy in everyday situations: the translator. One Redditor has thankfully recreated a functional version of the translator and this clip shows the delightfully faithful tool.
