Riot Games says it will officially end support for Valorant on older versions of Microsoft Windows in March, citing “security reasons.” The competitive FPS game, which uses Riot’s custom Vanguard security software, is having its support cut for Valorant on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 versions as Riot Games aims to clamp down further on cheaters.

Kuo: Apple to Launch High-End and Low-End Versions of Second-Generation Headset in 2025
Writing in a new Medium post summarizing his latest survey findings and predictions, Kuo says both models will likely arrive in 2025.
Apple’s second-generation AR/MR headset has two high-end and low-end models. The high-end and low-end will be developed and produced by Luxcaseict and Foxconn, respectively. The current launch schedule for both models will likely be in 2025.
Apple’s long-rumored AR/VR headset has yet to be announced, but a report earlier this week claimed that the company’s manufacturing partner Foxconn is already developing a cheaper second-generation version of the headset.
That report said Apple’s first headset will be “extremely expensive,” with industry estimates ranging from $3,000 to $5,000, while Apple’s second-generation headset will have a more affordable price within the territory of “a high-end Mac computer.” Now it seems Apple is planning a two-tiered series of the second-generation device to appeal to a wider customer base, similar to the way it offers both standard and more premium Pro-branded iPhones each year.
In his latest report, Kuo says that Pegatron is gradually withdrawing from Apple’s headset business, and will likely transfer its AR/MR development team and production resources to Luxcaseict (a joint venture between Luxshare ICT and Pegatron), led by Luxshare ICT, in the first half of 2023.
This will see Luxshare ICT taking over the subsequent design and production of the high-end version of the second-generation headset. Such changes will lead to “the subsequent acceleration of reducing the cost of the headset, which is what Apple expects,” adds Kuo.
Apple’s plans to release a cheaper version of its AR/VR headset were first reported last month by The Information‘s Wayne Ma and Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. The headset would supposedly use more affordable components, such as lower-resolution lenses.
According to The Information, “significant” work on the second-generation device started last year, and at the time, the goal was to launch the cheap headset in 2024. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple’s budget mixed reality headset could arrive in either 2024 or 2025.
Apple’s first headset is expected to be announced at WWDC in June and will reportedly have over a dozen cameras, dual 4K lenses, advanced eye and hand tracking, and many other advanced features. As for software, the device is said to have an iOS-like interface with a grid of apps.
In a follow-up tweet to his latest Medium blog, Kuo said his prediction for the mass shipment schedule of the first-generation headset is unchanged, but the likelihood of it being released at a spring event this year is decreasing. However, Kuo also said that the probability of the headset’s launch alongside the iPhone 15 in the third quarter of this year “is rising.”

Microsoft could show off AI-powered versions of Word and Outlook this March
Microsoft reportedly plans to introduce upgraded Office apps with AI features in the coming weeks. According to The Verge, the tech giant is preparing to show what its Prometheus AI technology and OpenAI’s language AI can do for Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and other Microsoft 365 apps as soon as this March. Microsoft recently launched a reimagined Bing that can generate conversational responses to search queries, thanks to the Prometheus model, which was built with the help of OpenAI.
Additionally, the company introduced a new Edge with a built-in “AI copilot” that’s also powered by Prometheus. A button on the top-right corner gives users quick access to Bing’s new chat feature, and as we mentioned in our hands-on, it’s like having ChatGPT right in your browser. The Verge says Microsoft wants its AI technology to be able to generate graphs and graphics for use in PowerPoint or Excel. According to a previous report published by The Information, the company also wants its AI model to be able to generate text using simple prompts within its Office apps.
That Microsoft seems to be in a hurry to launch new AI-powered features for its products comes as no surprise. The company likely intends to move fast to get as many people as possible to start using its products before Google can launch its ChatGPT rival. Apparently, Microsoft was originally supposed to introduce the new Bing in late February, but it moved up the launch and scheduled it before Google’s Bard announcement. The company is also bound to keep expanding its AI-powered feature list, seeing as it recently signed a “multi-billion dollar” investment in OpenAI last month.

Apple Seeds Release Candidate Versions of iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 to Developers
Registered developers can download the iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 profiles from the Apple Developer Center, and once installed, the betas will be available over the air.
iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 add support for physical Security Keys that can be used as added protection for an Apple ID. Any FIDO Certified physical security key can be linked to an Apple ID to be used for authentication when logging into a new device or otherwise accessing an Apple ID.
Security Keys replace the digital verification codes sent to an Apple device when using an Apple ID, and Apple says that the physical key provides strong protection against phishing and unauthorized account access. Note that two physical security keys are required when using this feature as there needs to be a backup in case one is lost. Losing a security key would revoke access to an Apple ID, as Apple cannot override the protection.
In addition to Security Keys, the beta also adds more instruction for transferring music from an iPhone over to a HomePod using handoff. Apple’s full notes for the update are below:
This update includes the following enhancements and bug fixes:
– New Unity wallpaper honors Black history and culture in celebration of Black History Month
– Security Keys for Apple ID allow users to strengthen the security of their account by requiring a physical security key as part of the two factor authentication sign in process on new devices
– Support for HomePod (2nd generation)
– Emergency SOS calls now require holding the side button with the up or down volume button and then releasing in order to prevent inadvertent emergency calls
– Fixes an issue in Freeform where some drawing strokes created with Apple Pencil or your finger may not appear on shared boards
– Addresses an issue where the wallpaper may appear black on the Lock Screen
– Fixes an issue where horizontal lines may temporarily appear while waking up iPhone 14 Pro Max
– Fixes an issue where the Home Lock Screen widget does not accurately display Home app status
– Addresses an issue where Siri may not respond properly to music requests
– Resolves issues where Siri requests in CarPlay may not be understood correctly

Cozy Platformer Mail Time Gets New Trailer, PlayStation Versions Coming
As part of the Wholesome Snack stream, 3D-platformer Mail Time got a new trailer and an announcement that it would be coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in April 2023, alongside the previously announced PC and Nintendo Switch versions.
In Mail Time, you play as a little mushroom-wearing mail carrier, delivering packages and letters to the sleepy towns and homes of a forest world called Grumblewood Grove. You can leap from branches, use envelopes to glide, and jump on mushrooms to reach unseen heights. The forest is populated by various critters, including a capybara hiding in a barrel, a scheming crime-doing rat, and a peckish hamster. The trailer shows off a never-before-seen area: an enormous leftover picnic.
Mail Time is from 23-year-old solo developer Kela Van Der Deijl. Mail Time pulls from the platformers of the Nintendo 64 area like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. It offers large levels with a multitude of tasks to do and items to collect, albeit with a hand-drawn aesthetic and a eye towards a cozy lived-in atmosphere. The unnamed mail carrier is fully customizable from head to toe, with over 46,000 potential combinations between hair color, skin tone, and clothing. You can also choose the mail career’s pronouns.
