Big banks’ proposed digital wallet payment system likely to fail
A group of leading banks is partnering with payment service Zelle’s parent company to create their own “digital wallet” connected to consumer credit and debit cards to enable online or retail store payments.
The new payment service, however, must compete with entrenched digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay that are embedded on mobile devices. It’s also not the first attempt for some in the consortium to create a digital wallet payment service.
The consortium includes Wells Fargo & Co., Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and four other financial services companies, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The digital wallet, which does not yet have a name, is expected to launch in the second half of this year.

I won $100,000 on the lottery after thinking my ticket was worth $100 – I had it tucked in my wallet for a month
A LOTTERY winner who thought she had only scooped $100 tucked the ticket away in her wallet for a month – only to realise she had won $100,000.
Katrina Nicholls and her husband Ernest have played the lottery for more than four decades.

After buying a Lotto Max ticket, Katrina said she decided to scan the ticket using her phone.
“We’ve tried our hands at all the games over the years,” she said.
“I was at home when I checked the ticket on the app. I thought the win was for $100 at first.”
Happy with her windfall, Katrina decided to put the winning ticket aside and planned to cash it in at another time.
“I tucked it in my wallet for a month,” she explained.
But when she checked it again, she was stunned to realise she had actually won $100,000.
The couple, from Ontario, had matched the last six of seven numbers in the exact order in the September 9 Lotto Max draw and had won $100,000.
Katrina said: “We didn’t believe the $100,000 prize amount until today when it was confirmed at the prize centre. This is our first big win.
“I feel incredible gratitude.”
Her husband Ernest said he was “still numb” after the huge win, Daily Hive reports.
The couple said they plan to use the cash to enjoy their retirement – and to spoil their grandchildren.
The winning ticket was bought at The Bargain Centre on Main Street in Markdale.
It comes after a car wash manager who used to earn just £330 a month scooped a massive £7million after buying a ticket on his birthday.
Kathar Hussain saved up his tips from customers to buy the winning lottery ticket.
He was on holiday in India, where his family live, when he struck lucky in the UAE’s Big Ticket Draw.
The huge £7million prize is the biggest in the competition’s 30-year history – making Kathar one of the biggest ever jackpot winners in the UAE.
He said he would split the life-changing cash with his friend Devaraj – who he collected tips with to buy the ticket.
Another lottery winner was left “shaking” after realising he made a huge mistake as he checked his £80,000 winning lottery ticket.
And another winner scooped a whopping £1.5million using the same number combination she’s used for years.
Google is beta testing digital state ID cards in its Android Wallet app
Maryland was one of the first states to make state IDs available on Apple’s Wallet app for iPhones, and now Google is beta testing support for the “Digital Driver’s License” in the Wallet app on Android phones. The Apple Wallet integration can already be used to get through TSA at airports like the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport that allow the use of digital state IDs, which should be similar on Android.
According to Google’s updated support page: users running Android 8.0 (or later) who are in the Google Play Services beta program (specifically, version 48.22) are eligible. After enabling Bluetooth and Nearby Devices, and also making sure your phone has a scent lock, you should now see a new option for “ID…

PayPal Launches Integration With MetaMask Wallet for Ethereum Transactions
The company said in a statement that select U.S.-based MetaMask customers will be able to use PayPal to buy Ether as of Wednesday, and that the feature will be rolled out to all U.S. users in the coming weeks. A crypto wallet like MetaMask is often the starting point for interacting with Web3 applications like play-to-earn games and some metaverse platforms. Adding PayPal to MetaMask could broaden the customer base for some of these applications by removing the complexity from buying crypto.

Apple Blocks Coinbase Wallet App From Sending NFTs Because of In-App Purchase Dispute
Coinbase Wallet says that Apple would not approve an app update until the NFT-sending feature was disabled, and the removal of the functionality will make it more difficult for iPhone users who have an NFT to transfer the NFT to other wallets or gift an NFT to friends or family. The developers behind the app say that Apple has introduced profit-protecting policies that come at the expense of “developer innovation across the crypto ecosystem.” Coinbase Wallet is hoping that this is a mistake and has tweeted an invitation to Apple to discuss the matter.

iPhone Users in Colorado Can Now Add IDs to Wallet App
Colorado’s Department of Revenue announced the news today, and said that the Wallet-based ID or license can be presented at select TSA checkpoints at the Denver airport. Digital IDs are available to individuals with a current, valid Colorado-issued driver license or ID.
The Department of Revenue says that the Wallet ID is designed to be a companion to the physical driver’s license or ID, and it is not a replacement. Coloradans must continue to carry their physical driver license or ID with them, and the Wallet ID can only be used at airports.
Apple with iOS 15 added support for allowing users from participating U.S. states to add their licenses and state IDs to the Wallet app, and so far, Arizona, Maryland, and Colorado support the feature.
Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah are also working on support.
(Thanks, Coady!)
