Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice covering parts of Northern Scotland[/caption]
Most of the Scottish highlands – as well as some lowland areas near Glasgow, Perth and Edinburgh – are set to be covered by the white stuff from 9pm today until 6pm on Boxing Day.
Temperatures could fall as low as 1C on Sunday night and meteorologists warned: “Frequent blustery snow showers are likely to cause some travel disruption to higher routes.”
The Met Office also suggested those living in affected areas should prepare for power cuts.
Deputy chief meteorologist David Oliver said: “An unsettled Christmas weekend is on the way for many, with those in the north and west seeing the most frequent and the heaviest showers.
“High winds will affect some coasts through the weekend with gales in places, especially the north and west.
“Christmas Day will be unsettled for many, with the most frequent showers in the northern half of the UK and some more sporadic and mostly lighter showers further south.
“There is some uncertainty about the timing of colder air from the northwest, but it looks like this will introduce some snow showers to the northwest of Scotland late on Christmas Day.”
For those in central and eastern parts of England, weather conditions across the festive period are set to remain mostly dry.
It comes as people across the UK have been hit with travel disruptions and chaos after extreme weather.
The beginning of the week saw nine flood warnings and 43 alerts in force across England, with a further seven in Wales.
While the drastic rise in temperature from -17C to 15C a few days ago led to carnage as 30,000 people were affected by burst pipes.
And in Manchester Airport earlier this month passengers were devastated when hundreds of flights were cancelled due to both runways being closed.
Passengers this week are now reporting baggage waits of up to seven hours due to a knock on affect from the heavy snowfall.

As winter weather delays flights, these apps could ease your headaches
![A board shows canceled flights at an airport](https://helios-i.mashable.com/imagery/articles/031RZljYw3yQJivT4G7T6a3/hero-image.jpg)
With a huge winter storm making life difficult for a good portion of North America just as the holidays begin, there may be a better than average chance you could face delays.
Thousands of flights have either been delayed or canceled due to the storm already, and even if conditions improve, airlines will still be dealing with getting passengers where they need to go.
It’s good to be prepared for whatever delays happen, whether it’s prior to your trip, or in the middle of it. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps out there to help you stay informed and ease some of the frustrations of travel delays.
FlightAware, FlightStats to check your flight status
Many major airlines have their own apps, of course, where you can check the status of your upcoming flights, including delays and cancellations. But there are also independent apps which come in very handy, especially for smaller airlines.
FlightAware tracks all flights arriving and leaving an airport, even cargo carriers like UPS or private jet charters like NetJets, so you could get an idea of how things are going overall even if your particular flight is OK right now.
FlightStats is similar, although with less frills, while FlightRadar24 is built more for checking out the at-the-moment skies and what’s landing and taking off.
Flighty is more like a personal assistant for passengers, with options such as “where’s my plane” alerts, connection information and even baggage claim details. Currently, Flighty is offering a complimentary flight for first-time users, and the annual fee is $49.99.
Stuck in an airport for a while? May as well look around
Though missing your connection due to a delayed flight is bad – real bad, as in call-your-airline bad – being stuck in a strange airport isn’t fun either. But if you do find yourself with time on your hands at an airport, there are several airport map apps out there.
Trippie breaks down airports by where you can find food near you, along with airport maps, by accessing the airport’s websites. It also has flight tracking, and a way to check how long those pesky lines are at the TSA checkpoints.
How to check your airport lounge options
OK, you’ve got a few hours to kill, it turns out. Why not hit up one of those airport lounges your more travel-savvy friends talk about?
With LoungeBuddy, you can track down which lounges are in that airport and where they are, along with how much they cost. They also give you details about what they offer – from wifi to food and beverages.
You can then book a pass to that lounge through the app (although eligibility requirements will apply in some cases, like if you’re a member of a frequent-flier club or a credit-card holder).
Hungry? No need to wait in line with Grab
There’s also the point when you’re about to arrive at an airport, hungry and in a rush because your layover is too short. While, yes, trail mix at an airport store is an option, is it? Really?
At a number of airports, an app called Grab has a solution – order ahead. Using the app, you can order food, and it’ll be waiting for you by the time you arrive.
The Grab app tells you what’s available for ordering, where the restaurant is, and how long it’ll take for your food to get ready.
Check to see if the airport you’re flying into or out of uses the Grab app. Some airports use independent ordering services, so it’s good to check ahead.
Apple Pushes Dark Sky Users to Revamped Weather App as Shutdown Looms
The Dark Sky app functionality was added to the Weather app in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura. Apple has introduced down-to-the minute precipitation forecasts for snow and rain, an hourly forecast for the next 10 days, and weather modules that provide expanded information on humidity, precipitation levels, visibility, wind speed, and more.
There are high-resolution weather maps available, according to Apple, as well as hyperlocal weather forecasts. Apple has been warning of the upcoming Dark Sky shutdown for several months, but information is ramping up now that there are less than two weeks to go before app support ends.

UK weather: Last day of ice warnings before temperatures soar
UK weather – Big thaw arrives today with Met Office flood warnings as heavy rain and melting snow bring fresh chaos
FLOOD warnings have been issued for parts of the UK today as heavy downpours threaten to ignite travel chaos.
Ten flood warnings are in place over concerns of rising waters as a band of rain moves across the country.

Heavy downpours and showers travelling northeast will bring heavy rain to the south and the west.
The Met Office is warning heavy and persistent rain could bring some travel disruption with two yellow warnings in place for the south of England and the south of Wales.
Flood warnings have been activated for a number of regions as rivers rise due to the wet weather.
Surface water is expected near roads in at least 10 areas including in parts surrounding the River Avon, River Axe, River Brit, River Char and River Wriggle.
High waters may also be seen at the River Yealm at Yealmbridge to Yealmpton, Upper Frome at Maiden Newton and Upper Frome from Maiden Newton to Dorchester.
Brits are urged to regularly check for updates to their forecast and see if their area is affected.
As the temperatures start to climb again, a big thaw has the potential to trigger flooding from bursting pipes.
Defrosting pipes are already starting to cause headaches around the country, with residents across four streets in Winnersh, Berkshire, waking to find floodwater at their doorstep following a huge water main burst on Sunday morning.
Several reports of burst pipes were made to utilities firm Welsh Water because of a “rapid thaw”, the Telegraph reports.
Residents in at least one part of England have been urged not to call 999 over rising waters unless their lives are in danger.
Shropshire fire department attended eight call-outs for flooding caused by burst pipes in just 24 hours.
A spokesperson said: “Unless there is a risk to life, there is little we can do.”
Mild conditions are set to stick around from today until at least Friday after a raft of freezing temperatures and snowfall.
Some downpours will be accompanied by gales or severe gales.
There will be drier interludes too, with temperatures slightly above normal.
The mercury is expected to jump by 15C this week and the cold snap will be replaced with warmer weather due to milder air coming in from the Atlantic.
Daytime maximum temperatures across the UK on Monday will range from 11C to 14C – in stark contrast to the chilly temperatures recorded over the last week.
Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said both daytime and night-time temperatures are expected to increase from tomorrow.
He said: “Daytime temperatures by Monday, we’re looking at across the UK highs of 11C to 14C, so around about 15C certainly higher than they’ve been.”
Mr Petagna said cold wind has been coming down from the north in the last week or 10 days, but this week gusts are going to start blowing in from the west or south west.
“So it’s bringing milder air off the Atlantic, rather than coming down from the Arctic,” he said.
Mr Petagna said it is not unheard of to get temperatures in the low teens at this time of year, but said the contrast of going from very cold to very mild in a day or two is quite unusual.
