Mark Zuckerberg says the metaverse won’t be as cringey as his cursed selfie

Zuckerberg backtracks after Horizon Worlds backlash, claims Meta is ‘capable of much more’
After a week of being pelted with tomatoes in the internet town square over the low-quality graphics of Meta‘s Horizon Worlds, Mark Zuckerberg has emerged from the slush to clear the air. Despite the unimpressive WiiU-like avatars and low-res virtual landmarks we’ve seen so far, Zuck claims Meta is capable of creating pseudo-realistic worlds in the metaverse.
Earlier this week, Zuck posted to Facebook announcing the release of Meta’s platform Horizon Worlds in Spain and France. The post was accompanied by a “selfie” of Zuck’s giant-eyed avatar in Horizon Worlds. Behind him sit appallingly simple renderings of the Eiffel Tower and Barcelona’s Basílica de la Sagrada Família on the flattest plane of grass I have ever seen.
The internet was in agreement: Given the $10 billion Meta poured into the metaverse, this was an embarrassing result.
But today, Aug. 19, Zuck took to Instagram and Facebook to say the post was published “very quickly” in celebration and that Horizon Worlds is “capable of much more,” and is “improving very quickly.”
To prove it, he included two photos, both presumably from within more advanced versions of Horizon Worlds: one of his “yassified” avatar and another of a vaguely Roman-esque ruin landscape.
I honestly have no idea what the ruins one is supposed to show us — maybe that Horizon Worlds is capable of graphics that come standard with most modern video games? But we can’t deny it’s a welcome upgrade. We’ll keep an eye out, Mark.
Mark Zuckerberg has responded to the metaverse memes
Earlier this week, Mark Zuckerberg posted a screenshot of his digital avatar standing in front of the Eiffel Tower and what I think is supposed to be la Sagrada Família as a way of announcing that Horizon Worlds was launching in France and Spain. Unfortunately for him, the internet more or less immediately started dragging and meme-ifying the screenshot of the virtual reality platform — likely because the graphics were, as one Twitter user described it, about on par with the Teletubbies game for the PlayStation One.
Zuckerberg’s apparently seen the memes and wants to let you know that Meta is working on the graphics. On Friday, he posted some new screenshots to Facebook and Instagram, showing off a significantly more life-like version of…
Mark Zuckerberg promises ‘major updates’ to Horizon avatars after his is widely mocked
Mark Zuckerberg says that Meta has “major updates” planned for its VR graphics after previously sharing an image of his own VR avatar that was widely mocked. He said the company would share more details about the changes at its upcoming Connect conference.
Zuckerberg’s update comes several days after a screenshot from Horizon Worlds, the company’s social VR environment, went viral on Twitter.
The images were originally shared last week alongside an announcement that Horizon Worlds was launching in France and Spain. The screenshot showed a nearly featureless Zuckerberg avatar in front of a VR Eiffel Tower and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia. The image quickly took on a life of its own on Twitter as people mocked the low-res and amateur-looking graphics. In particular, many questioned why Zuckerberg’s avatar was so flat and lifeless when the company has spent billions of dollars and staked its future on the success of the metaverse.

Though Zuckerberg didn’t directly address the critiques, he acknowledged the image he had previously shared was “pretty basic,” and promised improvements. His latest post included two new, much more detailed and lifelike renders: his avatar and an outdoor scene depicting ancient ruins.

“I know the photo I posted earlier this week was pretty basic — it was taken very quickly to celebrate a launch,” Zuckerberg wrote. “The graphics in Horizon are capable of much more — even on headsets — and Horizon is improving very quickly.”

You can turn Meta’s chatbot against Mark Zuckerberg
Meta’s AI thinks CEO Mark Zuckerberg is as sketchy as you might — at least, if you ask the right questions at the right time. The BBC and other outlets like Insider have reported on their adventures stress-testing BlenderBot 3, the artificial intelligence chat tool Meta released last week. As they note, it’s easy to make BlenderBot turn against its creator, calling him “creepy” or untrustworthy or even saying he “exploits people for money.” But that’s not precisely an indictment of BlenderBot or Zuckerberg. It’s a funny reminder that most chatbots don’t have straightforward, coherent opinions — instead, they’re an interface for tapping into a vast library of online human thought.
