Apple Says CarPlay Now Available in Over 800 Vehicle Models as GM Plans to Phase Out Support in EVs
The updated figure comes after GM announced that it plans to phase out CarPlay in future electric vehicles in favor of its own in-car software platform, developed in partnership with Google. The decision led to backlash from some customers given the immense popularity of CarPlay, but GM doubled down on the plans in an interview with The Verge last week, saying it is building a “holistically integrated” operating system with a “much-improved navigation and charging experience for future EV owners.”
At WWDC last year, Apple stated that 79% of U.S. buyers would only consider a vehicle that works with CarPlay, and said the platform is available in 98% of vehicles sold in the country. “It’s a must-have feature when shopping for a new vehicle,” touted Apple.
Apple plans to introduce the next generation of CarPlay later this year, promising support for multiple displays across the dashboard, instrument cluster integration, built-in climate controls, an FM radio app, widgets, increased personalization, and more. Apple said the first vehicles with support for the new CarPlay experience will be announced later this year, with over a dozen automakers committed to offering it.
In related news, code on Apple’s servers suggests that British automaker Lotus is planning to support Apple’s digital car key feature in the Wallet app, which would allow future vehicles to be unlocked, locked, and started with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Google TV adds over 800 free channels. How to access them
Google TV takes on Roku with over 800 free TV channels
Google TV is becoming more like basic cable. The company announced today it’s adding content from several new providers to make browsing ad-supported live TV channels a central part of the platform. The news comes several months after the company was reportedly negotiating with media companies to add similar content to YouTube.
Starting today, Google TV is adding Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) channels from Tubi, Plex and Haystack News to its existing FAST content from Pluto TV. In addition, Google is adding “built-in channels from Google TV that you can watch without even downloading or launching an app.” The company says the service now aggregates over 800 free channels.
FAST is the industry term for ad-supported “linear streaming content,” meaning it’s broadcast at specific times like traditional television. (Think standard afternoon programming on TNT or TBS.) Already embraced by competitors like Roku, FAST channels turn streaming into an experience akin to channel-surfing in the old days — further proving that live TV streaming has essentially become cable sent through a different pipe.
Google says the content will include shows like Westworld (which Warner Bros. Discovery removed from HBO Max), Law & Order: SVU and The Walking Dead. Additionally, it includes news content from NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox. It also has international programming in more than 10 languages, including Spanish, Japanese and Hindi. In addition, the programming is organized in an updated TV guide, which Google says makes browsing easier and faster. The Google TV Live tab will also include content from YouTube TV or Sling TV (if you subscribe), putting all your live TV content in one spot.
Although the Google TV changes arrive beginning today, the company says it will roll it out “over the coming weeks,” (a Google classic) so you may have to wait a bit before trying it. First, of course, you’ll need a Google TV device like Chromecast with Google TV or a television from Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips with Google TV built-in. The company says the feature will trickle down to Android TV devices later this year.

Google TV adds over 800 free TV channels, revamps Live tab
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 gaming laptop is $800 off right now
If you’ve been looking to scoop up a new gaming laptop but a solitary screen doesn’t quite cut the mustard, you should perhaps consider the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16. It’s our current pick for the best gaming laptop with dual displays. Best of all, it’s on sale right now. One variant is available for $2,700, which is a whopping $800 off the regular price.
This configuration comes with a 16-inch, 165Hz ROG Nebula HDR QHD 16:10 display. It’s powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU. The 32GB of DDR5 RAM should help ensure you can play most games without too many hitches. You’ll have a decent volume of storage space for your games too, as this ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 has a 1TB SSD.
The internal specs aren’t what make this gaming laptop stand out, though. It’s that second screen that sits between the keyboard and the main display. The 14-inch ScreenPad Plus could be handy for productivity, allowing you to keep an eye on certain apps while keeping most of your focus on more important tasks up top.
It might help you keep tabs on the news, social media or a show you’re watching while getting some work done. Or you might use it to keep Discord open while you play games or pull up a walkthrough on YouTube if you get stuck. Alternatively, you could use it to monitor your viewership stats while you stream your gameplay.
We gave the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 a score of 86 in our review, which is certainly respectable. The device isn’t all sunshine and roses, unfortunately. We felt that it’s fairly bulky with high-pitched fans and an underwhelming battery life. The touchpad, which ASUS scuttled off to the right side of the keyboard, is a bit awkward too. Still, for those hunting for a good deal on a dual-screen laptop, you won’t find many better options elsewhere at the minute.
