Runecast is an AI-driven patented platform that enables organisations to run secure and compliant workloads anywhere. Our platform offers customers an integrated approach in protecting their cloud-native and traditional applications – whether they run on-prem or in the cloud.
How did you come up with the idea for the company?
All of the founders are ex-IBMers, we came from a technical background – admins, architects, DevOps engineers. At IBM we had built a Virtualization Center of Excellence defining best practices and security guidelines for customers globally. We also had to do a lot of firefighting, manual security compliance checks and vulnerability assessment.
We realized that most of the problems we had to deal with were already documented somewhere – either in knowledge bases, documentation, security guidelines or even blog articles. But all of that valuable information is in a human-readable, unstructured format. We knew that if we found a way to harness this data and continuously parse it into machine-readable rules, we can help organsations find misconfigurations before they cause security breaches or outages.
Knowing the amount of time, money and headache this could save – for admins and organisations as a whole – we were determined to embark on this mission.
We use AI in a unique way. We built Natural Language Processing modules that parse the human-readable unstructured data into machine readable rules. This allows us to maintain the most complete and up to date set of rules, which offers the most complete protection for the mix of traditional and cloud-native applications customers have.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?
Runecast has had explosive growth – from a VMware ITOM solution we grew into a platform to secure and optimize any workload, running anywhere – on-prem, public cloud, operating systems or containers. We’ve developed much stronger and broader capabilities in the last two years, were named a Gartner Cool Vendor, got a patent and many other recognitions.
We expanded from a VMware solution to a hybrid and multi cloud platform and we greatly multiplied our customer base and number of Runecasters.
What can we hope to see from Runecast in the future?
While we will continue to strengthen our ITOM capabilities, we see a big space for innovation in the security area. We are uniquely positioned to offer a homogenous Cloud-Native Application Protection Platform, or CNAPP, which is a new category coined by Gartner in their 2021 Cloud Security Hype Cycle.
Within a single software product, we already offer best-in-class CSPM and CWPP capabilities, as well as DevOps Security with our KSPM, container image scanning and CI/CD integration. Combining all of these capabilities in one homogenous platform is a must-have to ensure integrated security and compliance across the mix of cloud-native and traditional workloads that every organization has these days.
We are excited to be one of the pioneers in CNAPP – it’s a space with complex and dynamic problems where continuous innovation is a must.
