About Agnes and Black Minds Matter
Agnes Mwakatuma and Annie Heyes founded Black Minds Matter UK (BMM UK) in June 2020 with the aim of connecting Black individuals and families with Black therapists to support their mental health. By July 2020, BBM UK’s waiting list had approximately 2600 people in line to access therapy.
By December 2020, just a few months since its founding, BMM UK had raised £800,000 to fund 1,500 courses of therapy.
BBM UK is a fully registered charity whose vision is to make mental health topics more relevant and accessible to all Black people in the UK. Their goal is to remove the stigma behind seeking health, and also to remodel the services to be relevant for the Black community.
Black Minds Matter UK is a fully registered charity operating in the UK; connecting Black individuals and families with free mental health services- by professional Black therapists to support their mental health. Our vision is to make mental health topics more relevant and accessible for all Black people in the U.K., removing the stigma and remodelling the services to be relevant for the Black community.
The BBM UK team runs a huge Instagram page, which raises awareness of the unique mental health challenges faced by Black people in the UK. This page helps tens of thousands of followers to access resources and information about mental health.
As the founder and elected CEO of BMM UK, Agnes provides leadership to nearly 100 professionals working alongside the charity each year. She leads the organisation’s financial management, strategies, and administration. She has been named Mental Health Advocate of the Year by Stylist, as well as being featured in Forbes and Bustle.
