Peruse of the current worldwide iTunes sales chart shows Queen of Rap Nicki Minaj reigning with her latest single ‘Super Freaky Girl,’ a feat made possible by domination of similar tallies in over 50 countries including the USA.
Produced by Dr. Luke, the sizzling bop – which heavily samples Rick James’ signature 1981 hit ‘Super Freak’ – was released at the stroke of midnight Friday (August 12) and shot to the top of iTunes in multiple countries in just an hour after becoming widely available.
In less than 24 hours since, dozens of other territories followed suit – an undertaking that’s not only setting ‘Super’ up for a super premiere on official charts around the world but is also amplified by the critical acclaim that’s accompanied the song’s success narrative.
Among those making headlines for imparting two-thumbs-up to the tune is Minaj’s former nemesis Iggy Azalea. Look inside to see what she said.
As Minaj fans (affectionately called #Barbz) were showering the new song with praise, an unexpected contributor joined the chorus – Azalea.
The 32-year-old, who made headlines earlier this week for announcing she was coming out of retirement (as we reported here), took to Twitter Friday (August 12) to share her feelings about ‘Super Freaky Girl.’
“‘Super Freaky Girl’ is a really well written song,” she started (as seen in the tweet above). “Like it’s constructed to be a hit and it’s BIG sounding.”
For some, the compliment came as a surprise as fans of both rapstresses know their history hasn’t always leaned on the positive side of things.
Apparently, that’s yesterday’s news as Nicki responded to Azalea’s kind words with gratitude.
The love fest between the femcees comes as reports surface ‘Super Freaky Girl’ has hit #1 on the real-time sales tallies of the USA, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Portugal, Greece, and more. For context, it’s tops in at least one country on every continent except Australia (where she is currently #2) and Antarctica (as of time reported).
While we won’t find out until week after next where the tune lands on the Billboard Hot 100 (once streaming and radio airplay is factored), the fanfare it’s courting so far suggests promise of one of her biggest first-week commercial performances yet.
