It’s easy to convince yourself that the building you’re in is haunted, particularly if that building was the temporary ongoing home of deceased persons—lots of deceased persons. But items falling off shelves could have a variety of causes, and until those causes are examined, jumping to the conclusion of “ghosts!” is just poor investigative technique. The point is, not everything is what it seems, which also holds true for this next story: Some People Who Appear to Be in a Coma May Actually Be Conscious. The condition is referred to as Covert Consciousness, where the brain can respond to stimuli while the body cannot. What that means in practical terms is medicine must now find a means of determining who is in a fully vegetative state, and who is capable of communicating in spite of outward appearances—the better to prevent a living death, which is far worse than anything we’ve ever heard or read about.
