Darwinium is the world’s first customer protection platform that helps businesses understand trust and risk across full digital journeys, not simply at point-in-time interactions.
For businesses that operate online, the holistic context of a transaction is more critical now than ever before. Fraudsters are increasingly taking advantage of gaps that are caused by having either a disparate set of systems that don’t talk to each other, or often internal teams that operate across different points in the customer journey.
At the moment, fraudsters can adapt faster than we can, and Darwinium redresses that balance.
As well as this ability to protect full customer journeys, Darwinium can help businesses simplify risk decisions by aggregating vast amounts of data helping them to make more accurate risk decisions without having to first make sense of complex data or vast rulesets.
For online businesses, their trusted customers can enjoy tailored, low-friction digital experiences while high risk transactions can better managed.
How did you come up with the idea for the company?
Darwinium is the company I have been building my whole life. It’s driven by a desire to protect those least able to protect themselves, and to root out fraudulent activity that is having such a widespread negative effect on society.
Attacks have advanced from brute force, identity theft and impersonation, to manipulating behavior. What I have realised is, unless you genuinely understand legitimate customer behavior, and make that the founding principle of validating a user’s identity, you are never going to win the arms race against fraud.
Deep fakes, AI and social engineering have shifted the goal posts when it comes to differentiating good and bad transactions. Let’s take scams as an example: It’s often the customer themselves initiating the transaction, so they pass all the appropriate identity and authentication checks. It’s just the payment they are making is not what they think it is. So actually, it’s about understanding user intent, and the basis of this lies in understanding trusted behavior. And this isn’t just about blocking fraud, this is also about helping the customer understand potential risk as they are mid-transaction, with dynamic, tailored messaging.

What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
Firstly, place your vision at the centre of everything you do. It’s what gets you out of bed in the morning and it attracts good people. Everyone we hire at Darwinium has the same purpose driven vision to make the world a better place, have fun doing it, while being commercially successful.
Secondly, make sure everyone has a seat at the table. My mantra at Darwinium is that good ideas come from everyone, and I seek to foster an environment where those good ideas multiply. Finally, be sponge-like in your approach to advice and feedback. That doesn’t mean you have to accept or act on everything you learn, but absorb it so that your strategy can be richly influenced and well informed.
What can we hope to see from the company in the future?
I truly believe we have a platform that can change the world, and a team that are capable of delivering on its promise. My founding team are some of the smartest minds in the business and they are endlessly hungry and curious to find new and better ways of protecting the good guys and deterring the bad.
We are true innovators, and in the end, we will tip the balance back in favour of businesses and away from the fraudsters who seek to disrupt them, and society at large.
