Despite several swings at bat, three years have separated Sam Smith from a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
Last spotted in the chart territory thanks to the Normani-assisted smash, 2019’s ‘Dancing with a Stranger,’ Smith recently hit a homerun with their latest single – the Kim Petras-enlisted ‘Unholy.’
Released September 22, the song’s dominating presence on Tik Tok helped it soar to #1 on the UK singles charts – a feat it seems poised to repeat Stateside.
Look inside to see how the Ilya and Jimmy Napes-produced bop made history with its blazing premiere on the U.S. Pop charts.
The lead single from Smith’s forthcoming album, the yet-titled follow-up to 2020’s ‘Love Goes,’ ‘Unholy’ entered this week’s Billboard Hot 100 at #3 – not only coming as the week’s highest-charting new song but also as the GRAMMY winner’s seventh time touching the top 10 over their career.
A milestone for both its performers, the ‘Unholy’ opening marks the highest debut of any Sam song to date while marking Kim’s first entry overall.
Making history along the way for Petras, who is the first openly trans artist to have a top 10 hit, here are the numbers that powered the tune’s inaugural placement.
- Streaming: 23.2 million U.S.-based streams
- Digital downloads: 12,000 U.S.-based sales
- Radio airplay: 2.8 million audience impressions
