Alibaba’s cloud computing unit has recently introduced its AI chatbot, Tongyi Qianwen. The chatbot will soon be integrated into Alibaba’s platforms, including its workplace messaging app, DingTalk.
It will be capable of performing various tasks such as composing emails, drafting business proposals, and transcribing meeting discussions into written notes. The chatbot will be available in both English and Chinese.
Since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a generative AI that can imitate human writing styles, interest in the technology has increased significantly. Other tech giants such as Google and Baidu have also launched similar chatbots.
However, China’s cyberspace regulator has proposed draft measures to regulate generative AI. Furthermore, a recent report by Goldman Sachs predicts that AI could replace up to 300 million full-time jobs.

On the other hand, Italy has become the first Western nation to block ChatGPT due to concerns over privacy. The country’s data protection regulator has ruled that the language model poses a high risk of infringing on users’ privacy and fundamental rights.
Italy’s decision could have significant implications for other countries’ policies towards AI and data protection.
The development of AI chatbots has the potential to revolutionise the way we work and communicate.
However, as with any new technology, it also raises concerns around privacy, job displacement, and regulation. It is crucial that these issues are addressed to ensure that AI is developed and implemented in an ethical and responsible manner.
As we move forward, we must continue to weigh the benefits and risks of AI and work towards finding a balance that maximises its potential while minimising its negative impacts.
