It’s a new year and, given the last few, there’s likely a bunch of new things to be worried about. That’s why we’re examining the Lucky Connection, because let’s face it, it can’t hurt. So give a listen to the most recent episode of the Boggarts and Banshee podcast where Dr. Beachcombing and Chris Woodyard discuss all methods of procuring luck historically. But stay away from negative chatter. The Great Breakfast Cereal Scare, where thousands claimed they were sickened by Lucky Charms cereal, was in all likelihood caused by the Nocebo Effect, whereby negative expectations propagated negative outcomes. In other words, people heard they would get sick by eating the product, so they ate it and got sick. And so goes the converse: So get out your four leaf clovers, put on your evil eye pendants, and keep that first dollar your great great great uncle won on the lottery thirty years ago. You may not need it. But if it makes you feel lucky, who knows what will happen. Caveat: Results May Vary. (CM)
