For a moment, the sinister-looking funnel of water seemed to be headed towards the Mudeford Sandbank — home to the most expensive beach huts in Britain.
The sea vortex ended up drifting away to the Needles on the Isle of Wight, then disappeared.
Witness William Evans said: “It looked like a big water funnel.
“I had gone up to see if I could get some shots of sunrise, but obviously there wasn’t much sun at all.
“You could see the spirals from a mile off and that was the intention of the picture, to show the scene with it being so windy.
“It was a really isolated downpour which swept across the bay towards the Isle of Wight before eventually dispersing near the Needles”.
