We’re looking at What Lies Beneath. Beneath Our Feet that is, starting with tunnels and military bases, and possible alliances with ETs, whose intentions are unknown. Is there any proof for the reality of these tunnels? A dubious one is a cool/creepy map displayed in the story but whose origins are unknown. These kinds of “underground” stories were popular in the pulp magazines of the 1940s, as told in Fred Lee Crisman Fights the Deros, about two underground civilizations—one malevolent, the other benevolent—brought to life by the schizoid rantings of more than one mental patient. The Crisman character, of course, is also wrapped up in a controversial early flying saucer case (the Maury Island incident) as well as the JFK assassination. You can’t make this stuff up. Or can you? (CM)
