Shawn Mendes may be used to topping Billboard charts with hits like ‘There’s Nothing Holding Me Back,’ ‘Senorita,’ and ‘Stitches,’ but this weekend proved his commercial dominance isn’t limited to the music realm.
With the October 7-released ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’ – the movie adaptation of the bestselling Bernard Waber book series – the award-winning singer-songwriter has also landed a hit at movie box offices.
Details inside.
‘Crocodile,’ which stars Mendes as the voice of the film’s central singing character, Lyle, also boasts a cast that features Constance Wu, Javier Bardem, and Winslow Fegley.
Entering the box office race against the highly anticipated Christian Bale and John David Washington movie, ‘Amsterdam,’ ‘Lyle’ swam to the #2 spot with an impressive $11.5 million opening over the weekend.
Its debut was outpaced only by last week’s champion, ‘Smile,’ which had the last laugh when it earned an additional $17.6 million to last weekend’s $22 million.
Another win for the ‘Lyle’ franchise came via its official soundtrack, which includes 8 tracks penned by Mendes. Stream it below.
