ASUS Now Sells the World’s Thinnest 14-Inch Laptop
Laptops come in multiple shapes and forms, but going with a thinner model usually means giving up performance and battery life. ASUS is hoping to change that with a new MacBook Pro competitor, which the company says is the thinnest 14-inch laptop in existence.

Rumor: New 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pros Delayed Until Next Year
According to a post from the account “yeux1122” on the Korean blog Naver, citing a supply chain source, the updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will not launch until early next year, around the March timeframe. According to the account, which has a mixed track record, supply chain activities related to the updated MacBook Pros are operating per a schedule suggesting a launch next year, not November.
Historically, Apple has launched new Macs in November multiple times, including the original 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019 and the first three Macs with the M1 chip in 2020, adding credence to the idea new MacBook Pro models were imminent.
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has said he expects the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros to be released in the “near future” and “within the coming months” as rumors have suggested a launch in November to follow past precedent. During the company’s latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple’s “product lineup is set” ahead of the holidays, possibly suggesting there will be no new product launches this year as Apple gears up for the holiday season.

14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro Turn One Year Old: When to Expect an Update
The redesigned MacBook Pro models represented the first major redesign of the high-end Mac laptop in years and a major step forward in Apple’s ongoing transition to its own silicon for the Mac lineup. One year since its introduction, some customers might be wondering what’s next for the MacBook Pro, so keep reading to learn more.
What to Expect
The MacBook Pro received a major redesign last year, in addition to a new 14-inch size that supplements the lower-end 13-inch model which remained in the lineup without a redesign. Given the new design for the larger models, Apple is likely to stick with the current form factor for several years, so any updates until then will generally be minor spec bumps with performance improvements.
The upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to be powered by the as-yet-announced M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, which build on the M2 chip announced in June. The M2 Max chip is expected to feature a 12-core CPU and a 38-core GPU, along with up to 64GB memory, while the M2 Pro will be slightly less powerful. The design, display, and other features are expected to be essentially identical to the current models, meaning the only major change is expected to be the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.
The M2 chip, which is soon to become a family of M2 chips, is the second-generation Apple silicon that furthers performance and power efficiency. So far on the Mac side, the M2 chip powers only the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the redesigned 13-inch MacBook Air. In addition to the M2 Pro and M2 Max we’re expecting to see in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, Apple is also reportedly working on an “M2 Extreme” chip for its upcoming Apple silicon Mac Pro.
When to Expect New Models
If you’re on the lookout for a new 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro, you might want to wait a few more weeks. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is expected to announce the new MacBook Pros, possibly alongside a new M2 Mac mini, as soon as November. Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman noted that Apple frequently schedules its new Mac releases for November to space out its launches, and that new Macs were not expected alongside today’s iPad and Apple TV announcements.
While the new MacBook Pros are on track to launch in the near future, I wouldn’t expect them to be released alongside the iPad Pro. The company has historically launched new Macs in November, as was the case in 2019 with the initial 16-inch MacBook Pro and in 2020 with the first Apple Silicon-based MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini.
Speaking of new products, Apple is working on an M2 version of the Mac mini, which will be the first update to the company’s smallest Mac in two years.
While it was initially expected Apple might hold a media event in October to show off the new iPad and Mac hardware, it’s now clear that there will be no such event given that many of the introductions have already been made via press release.

macOS Ventura Expected to Launch in Final Week of October With Support for Next 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro
The new MacBook Pro models will be available with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options, but other changes will be minimal, according to Gurman.
While he expects new iPad Pro models with the M2 chip to be announced in “a matter of days,” Gurman said the new MacBook Pros are unlikely to be released alongside the next iPad Pro. Instead, he said the new MacBook Pros are “on track to launch in the near future” and noted that Apple has often launched new Macs in November, such as the original 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019 and the first Macs with the M1 chip in 2020.
Gurman reiterated that Apple is working on an updated Mac mini with an M2 chip. Apple last updated the Mac mini with the M1 chip in 2020, and it continues to sell higher-priced Intel configurations with Core i5 and Core i7 processor options.
Apple still has no plans to hold an October event this year, according to Gurman:
Apple has traditionally ushered in its late fall iPad and Mac updates with splashy events, but this year’s rollout will be more subdued. Apple will launch the products on its website without the kind of gathering we saw in September with the iPhone 14’s debut.
My belief is that Apple has eschewed another event because of the fairly ordinary nature of the announcements. It’s a slew of updates that amount to spec bumps or seen-before designs. Another factor: Apple is probably saving its marketing energy for the Reality Pro headset debut next year.
Apple’s software engineering chief Craig Federighi and marketing chief Greg Joswiak are set to speak at the WSJ Tech Live event on the evening of October 25. It’s likely that Federighi and Joswiak will discuss macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16 — hopefully including the controversy surrounding the new Stage Manager feature.
iOS 16.1 will likely launch alongside iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura with many new features for the iPhone, including Live Activities in third-party apps.

New 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pros Reportedly Launching Later This Year
There has been uncertainty surrounding the timing of new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models and whether they would be equipped with 5nm or 3nm chips, but it is looking increasingly likely that the notebooks will be released later this year with 5nm chips. Apple is expected to hold an October event focused on the Mac and iPad, so it would be fitting for the new MacBook Pro models to be announced then.
In August, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips were “well into development and testing” at Apple. The notebooks will have very few new features beyond the faster chips, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, after receiving a major redesign in October 2021.
The latest design of the high-end MacBook Pro includes a flatter-edged chassis, a notch at the top of the display, revived ports like MagSafe and HDMI, and more. MacBooks typically go multiple generations between major hardware changes.
While they might remain 5nm, the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips are expected to be manufactured based on TSMC’s newer 5nm process known as “N5P,” so the new MacBook Pro models would still have performance and power efficiency improvements. However, a bigger bump in performance would come from the switch to 3nm chips in 2023 or later.
MacBook shipments have “remained relatively stable” compared to Intel-based Windows laptops, according to DigiTimes. The launch of the new MacBook Air with the M2 chip in July combined with the upcoming launch of new MacBook Pro models could result in Apple’s notebook market share hitting a nearly five-year high in 2022, the report added.

Kuo: New 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro to Enter Production This Year and Might Still Have 5nm Chips
In a tweet, Kuo said that given TSMC’s guidance indicated that revenue from 3nm chip production will not begin until 2023, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models may still have chips based on TSMC’s latest 5nm process.
New 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro with new processors will enter mass production in 4Q22. Given TSMC’s guidance that the 3nm will contribute revenue starting in 1H23, processors of 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models may still adopt the 5nm advanced node.
— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) August 22, 2022
Kuo’s information seems to conflict with a report from Taiwan’s Commercial Times that claimed the M2 Pro chip may be Apple’s first 3nm chip.
While the situation is a little confusing right now, it’s clear from reports that TSMC plans to begin production of 3nm chips for Apple in the near future, so we’ll have to wait and see which Macs they appear in first. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple has M2-based MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro models in development.
The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were released in October 2021 and have 5nm-based M1 Pro and M1 Max chip options.
