15-Inch MacBook Air Stockpiled by Suppliers Ahead of Rumored WWDC Launch
Despite the upcoming 15-inch MacBook Air launch, the sources believe that overall MacBook shipments will likely face a single-digit decrease in 2023 due to a “disappointing” first half of the year. The sources also said “pull-in momentum” for the 15-inch MacBook Air “has not been as strong compared with previous new products.”
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman expects the 15-inch MacBook Air to debut at WWDC. Like the 13-inch MacBook Air, the 15-inch model will be powered by the M2 chip with multiple GPU configurations, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
No design changes have been rumored for the 15-inch MacBook Air beyond its larger display size. The 13-inch model is equipped with a notch housing a 1080p camera, a MagSafe 3 charging port, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a scissor switch keyboard with a Touch ID button, and a Force Touch trackpad.
The sources believe MacBook shipments could recover in the second half of 2023 if new MacBooks with 3nm chips are released, but Apple’s chipmaker TSMC has reportedly faced 3nm yield issues, so it’s unclear when Apple’s M3 chip will debut.

Gurman: Apple to Announce 15-Inch MacBook Air at WWDC
Gurman revealed the plans in his newsletter on Sunday:
As part of watchOS 10, the company is planning to bring back widgets and make them a central part of the interface. This new strategy will debut at WWDC in June, alongside the unveiling of iOS 17, macOS 14, the 15-inch MacBook Air, and, of course, the much-anticipated mixed-reality headset.
The well-connected Apple reporter previously said new MacBooks were coming at WWDC, but this is the first time he explicitly confirmed the 15-inch MacBook Air will be unveiled at the conference, which will begin with Apple’s keynote on June 5.
15-inch MacBook Air rumors began in early 2021, and production of display panels for the laptop reportedly ramped up in recent months as its launch nears. Like the 13-inch MacBook Air, the initial 15-inch model will be powered by the standard M2 chip with multiple GPU configurations, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
No design changes have been rumored for the 15-inch MacBook Air beyond its larger display size. The 13-inch model has a notch in the display, a 1080p camera, a MagSafe 3 charging port, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a scissor switch Magic Keyboard with a Touch ID button, and a Force Touch trackpad, with available color options including Midnight, Starlight, Space Gray, and Silver.
Apple announced the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip at WWDC last year.

Kuo: 15-Inch MacBook Air to Offer Two M2 Chip Options, No M2 Pro Configuration
In a tweet shared earlier today, Kuo said that he expects the new MacBook Air to be available with two M2 chip options that have different numbers of cores like the existing 13-inch model. The news comes as a revision of Kuo’s previous forecast, which predicted that the 15-inch MacBook Pro could be configurable with either the M2 or M2 Pro chip.
The 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip that Apple launched last year is available in 8- and 10-core GPU variants, and the M1 model from 2020 was available in 7- and 8-core GPU options. The 15-inch MacBook Air is therefore likely to mirror the 13-inch model in terms of chip specifications.
Kuo also affirmed that the new model will explicitly be branded as a 15-inch MacBook Air, rather than a new product line. He expects the device to reach five to six million unit shipments in 2023. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman recently reported that the 15-inch MacBook Air will be announced at WWDC in June.

Upcoming 15-inch MacBook Air Again Rumored to Feature M2 Chip
According to the blog’s Taiwanese supply chain source, Apple’s decision to use an M2 chip was not down to production issues at chipmaker TSMC, but was due to a combination of factors, including market conditions and inventory adjustment.
A previous report out of Korea earlier this month claimed that Apple temporarily halted production of its M2 series chips at the start of 2023 following a pronounced slump in global demand for MacBooks.
The suspension is said to have continued through February, after which production of M2 series chips resumed, but they were “only half the level of the previous year,” said the Korean-language report at the time, quoting a person familiar with the matter.
Last week, an unreleased 15-inch MacBook Air with a processor “on par” with the M2 chip was spotted in App Store developer logs. The MacBook Air configuration had an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, just like the M2 chip, along with 8GB of RAM. The new Air was also listed with a display resolution equal to that of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
It’s unclear exactly when the 15-inch MacBook Air will be released, but it will likely be announced by WWDC, which begins June 5. The existing 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip launched in July 2022 after being announced at WWDC a month earlier.
The release of an M3-powered Mac is expected to come at a later date, and will represent a transition to a 3-nanometer production process from the current 5-nanometer standard. The 3nm process, which is also being used in this year’s iPhone 15 series, allows for significantly improved performance and more efficiency.

Gurman: 15-Inch MacBook Air With M2-Like Chip Spotted in Developer Logs
The report indicates that the chip in the new MacBook Air configuration spotted in the logs has an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, just like the M2 chip, along with 8GB of RAM. The laptop has the model identifier “Mac 15,3” and is listed as running macOS 14, which is expected to be announced at WWDC alongside iOS 17 and other updates. The new Air is also listed with a display resolution equal to that of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
There have been conflicting reports about which chip the 15-inch MacBook Air will use, but the developer logs and Gurman saying the M3 chip is “coming later” suggest that the initial 15-inch model will be powered by the M2 chip, like the 13-inch model.
A larger MacBook Air was first rumored in 2021, with production of 15-inch display panels reportedly ramping up in recent months. It’s unclear exactly when the laptop would be released, but it will likely be announced by WWDC, which begins June 5. Apple announced the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip at WWDC last year.
Apple is also working on an updated 13-inch MacBook Air, according to Gurman.
