From vegan to low calories and posh treats, we test protein-packed chocolate bars
AS we become more aware of our health we are ditching conventional snacks and turning to protein-packed products.
Last year the global protein bar market was valued at £2.72billion.
While they are no substitute for whole foods, these bars do offer a quick and convenient way to add protein to your diet to help fuel a workout, support muscle repair and curb your appetite.
Jane Atkinson looks at the choccy protein bars that can do just that . . .

POP Rolls from MyProtein are amazing.
I tried the salted caramel flavour and before even writing this review I went online and purchased a box of these lovely little chewy bars.
MyProtein are amazing lovely little chewy bars[/caption]
They remind me of Gold Bars that I used to munch on as a kid before I cared about calories.
They don’t have the same crunch but they have a satisfying chewiness with a gooey centre.
Made with milk – and palm oil, annoyingly.
I munched on one after lunch and even though there is just 7.8g of protein per 27g bar, it filled me up.
And with 95cal, 4.2g of fibre and 2.1g of fat per bar, there was no guilt either.
On special offer at 83p per bar at myprotein.com.
Vegan
THE Protein Works’ Ridiculous Vegan Protein Bar is supposedly designed to balance your conscience and your cravings.
It is 100 per cent vegan, with 197kcal per 47.5g bar, 19 per cent fat, six per cent fibre, 0.8g sugar and 15g of protein.

The Chocolate Caramelicious flavour is described as a multi-layered experience of a biscuit dough, nuts and caramel body, smothered in plant- based chocolate and smattered with high-protein crispies.
This sadly didn’t have the same satisfaction as the other two.
It had that slight protein bar taste to it and was a bit grainy for my liking. From £1.53 per bar.

Posh choc
THE Hotel Chocolat Layered Protein Bar from Myprotein tastes amazing.
Unlike the majority of the protein bars I have tried this doesn’t have that horrid aftertaste to it.

It is a delight of dark chocolate wrapped around six layers of different textured chocolate.
It has a very subtle ginger flavour. Not suitable for vegetarians as it contains bovine collagen.
This is the biggest of the three at 60g and contains the most protein at 18g, plus 9g of fat, 8g of fibre and 239kcal.
This is the tastiest protein bar I’ve ever tried but I won’t be buying any more as I know I’d just devour them and at 239kcal they are not low calorie. £2.83 per bar.

I sell bars of soap made out of my breast milk – I’ve made $100,000, it’s great for everything from acne to eczema
A MOTHER has accrued six figures in profit after selling soaps made from breast milk.
Taylor Robinson uses defrosted, donated, and expired milk and different natural oils to create the product.
Taylor Robinson has made over $100,000 from making soap out of breast milk[/caption]
She repurposes breast milk that would have expired and uses it as a vital ingredient[/caption]
The 31-year-old started her small business in 2020 with just $200, but it wasn’t until early 2021 that she decided to introduce the beauty product into the range.
Named after her three-year-old son, she credits the success of her company Leo Jude Soap Co to the milk.
The Jackson, Ohio native got the idea years ago when she was breastfeeding her son Leo, and her friend asked for the ingredient in a bar of soap.
“When my friend asked me to make her one at first I did think it was a little weird,” Taylor said.
“It was odd she wanted to use my breast milk but after reading about it I realized how amazing it is and got to it.”
“The reactions vary from extreme disgust to absolute admiration,” Taylor told NeedToKnow.online.
Breast milk is said to help soften skin, as well as reduce redness, oiliness, sensitivity, and itchiness.
She mixes the milk with oils, then makes the mixture into bars of soap.
The business owner even makes custom orders which have mothers ship their breast milk from across the world to her business.
The mum-of-two has gone on to make $100,000, selling the soaps for $14 a bar or $100 for a whole load.
“It seems like the older and much younger generations are usually grossed out by it, but Millennials and Gen-Z are aware of how amazing breast milk is,” Taylor shared.
She uses local breast milk which is expired for consumption and repurposes it because it would just go to waste otherwise.
“All that hard work the mum spent pumping isn’t for no reason.”
“It just means it’s been in the freezer for over a year and that makes it no longer good for consumption,” she said.
You can still receive all the skin health benefits from the milk, and her customers absolutely love it.
“It’s such a beautiful part of motherhood that goes into our soaps,” she added.
The soap has been known to help with minor rashes, diaper rash, cradle cap, acne, and eczema.
Taylor also juggles being a mom to her 13-month-old daughter Marz.

Biden administration bars CHIPS Act funding recipients from expanding in China
Chipmakers hoping to tap into the Biden administration’s $39 billion semiconductor manufacturing subsidy program will need to sign agreements promising they won’t expand production capacity in China. The requirement was among a handful of funding conditions the US Commerce Department outlined this week after announcing it would begin accepting applications for money from the CHIPS Act in late June. Congress passed the $280 billion measure last July in a rare show of bipartisan cooperation and set aside $52 billion in tax credits and funding for US semiconductor firms to expand domestic production.
“Recipients will be required to enter into an agreement restricting their ability to expand semiconductor manufacturing capacity in foreign countries of concern for a period of 10 years after taking the money,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters, per the Financial Times. Raimondo did not name China by name. However, the superpower is among the nations the US government considers a “foreign country of concern.”
Additionally, Raimondo said CHIPS Act recipients cannot “knowingly engage in any joint research or technology licensing effort with a foreign entity of concern that involves sensitive technologies or products,” a requirement likely designed to discourage domestic firms from signing agreements like the one Ford recently announced with China’s CATL.
“I also want to be clear that no CHIPS dollars can be spent on stock buybacks,” Raimondo said. “This is about investing in our national security, not enabling these companies to use our money to increase their profits.” The Commerce Department will also require companies applying for more than $150 million to outline how they plan to provide affordable childcare to workers, a funding condition Raimondo said reflects the current labor market. In some instances, the agency may require those same recipients to return some of the money they receive from the CHIPS Act to the government if they generate excess profits.

Apple’s Website Redesigned With New Drop-Down Menu Bars and More
On the desktop, there are new drop-down menus that appear when you hover over the categories in the top menu bar, including Store, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Watch, AirPods, TV & Home, Entertainment, Accessories, Support, Search, and Bag. The new Entertainment category replaces “Only on Apple” and continues to highlight Apple’s services.
On mobile devices, an all-in-one drop-down menu is now located on the right side of the top menu bar. When you tap on a category in the menu, a submenu opens with individual product pages and other helpful links, similar to the desktop experience.
All in all, these changes make navigating Apple’s website more convenient and surface helpful resources that some customers might not have been aware of.
