Is Professional Chess Becoming More Like Poker?
The article’s title? “Chess is just poker now.” And it starts by noting one inconvenient truth about still-unresolved allegations that Hans Niemann cheated to defeat world chess champion Magnus Carlsen:
Whatever really happened here, everyone agrees that for Niemann, or anyone else, to cheat at chess in 2022 would be conceptually simple. In the past 15 years, widely available AI software packages, known as “chess engines,” have been developed to the point where they can easily demolish the world’s best chess players — so all a cheater has to do to win is figure out a way to channel a machine’s advice….
What once seemed magical became calculable; where one could rely on intuition came to require rigorous memorization and training with a machine. Chess, once poetic and philosophical, was acquiring elements of a spelling bee: a battle of preparation, a measure of hours invested. “The thrill used to be about using your mind creatively and working out unique and difficult solutions to strategical problems,” the grandmaster Wesley So, the fifth-ranked player in the world, told me via email. “Not testing each other to see who has the better memorization plan….”
The advent of neural-net engines thrills many chess players and coaches… Carlsen said he was “inspired” the first time he saw AlphaZero play. Engines have made it easier for amateurs to improve, while unlocking new dimensions of the game for experts. In this view, chess engines have not eliminated creativity but instead redefined what it means to be creative.
Yet if computers set the gold standard of play, and top players can only try to mimic them, then it’s not clear what, exactly, humans are creating. “Due to the predominance of engine use today,” the grandmaster So explained, “we are being encouraged to halt all creative thought and play like mechanical bots. It’s so boring. So beneath us.” And if elite players stand no chance against machines, instead settling for outsmarting their human opponents by playing subtle, unexpected, or suboptimal moves that weaponize “human frailty,” then modern-era chess looks more and more like a game of psychological warfare: not so much a spelling bee as a round of poker.

The Countess, who is married to Her Majesty’s son Prince Edward, shared a unique bond with her mother-in-law.
They shared a dedicated work ethic as well as many of the same interests.
And as a gift from her late “mama,” Sophie will reportedly be handed a raft of patronages to continue her legacy.
It comes as…

“The Queen’s decision to pass on these patronages reflects the closeness of their bond.
“Sophie’s growing popularity with the public is also evident and she will take on a larger public profile in a new-look monarchy of King Charles.”
It’s understood Sophie is likely to adopt patronages the Queen held for the Women’s Institute and Dogs Trust.
The mum is already patron of over 70 charities and organisations – such as Childline and Blind Veterans UK – and is known for her dedication and empathy.

Both traits were displayed when she and Edward visited Manchester this week to view the floral tributes on display.
The Earl and Countess of Wessex met well-wishers at St Anne’s Square, where at one point Sophie broke down with emotion.
She was seen comforting a young man, Josh, who was standing with his mum, Sue.
After the exchange, Sue told Sky News: “The first time she came down, Josh passed the bouquet over and then she came back over before she went in the car and gave Josh another hug. And she laid the flowers over there.”
She added: “It was quite emotional to be honest. I’m trying to hold it in. I just thought it was the best thing. I wasn’t expecting Sophie to come over.”
Another woman said Sophie stopped to thank her for taking the time to say goodbye to Her Majesty today.

Twitter Is Becoming a Podcast App
“What we’re really trying to capture here is as if it’s like another user recommending you something,” Twitter senior product manager Evan Jones, who focuses on audio, told Hot Pod. Podcast discovery is notoriously difficult, limited either to top 100 charts, hand-picked selections on apps, or — more often than not — word of mouth. No platform has managed to crack it, yet. It’s easy to imagine the promotional possibilities around being able to share and listen to podcasts in the same app, but it’s not quite there yet. The test does not yet have a clipping capability, and listening can only happen in the Spaces tab, not on the timeline. That being said, Spaces has a clipping feature that could be applied to podcasts at some point.
