‘It’s a big step’, says Taylor after Manchester City’s defeat of title rivals Chelsea
GARETH TAYLOR hailed Lauren Hemp for helping Manchester City punish Chelsea whilst contending with an ear infection.
Filippa Angeldahl’s angled strike and Hemp’s fierce finish sealed a 2-0 victory halting City’s 11-game winless WSL run against the Blues.

The win for Gareth Taylor’s side saw the title race become much tighter with just three points seperating Manchester United and Man City from Arsenal who are fourth[/caption]
Steph Houghton and Lauren Hemp impressed for Gareth Taylor’s against Chelsea[/caption]
It saw Gareth Taylor’s aces go second above Chelsea before their clash with fourth-placed Arsenal this coming Sunday.
The City gaffer said: “We looked dangerous on the break and I was mulling over getting fresh legs on
“But I think sometimes, when you’re in the moment like that, it’s really difficult.
“The one change we made was more because Lauren has been suffering and she didn’t train on Saturday.
“She is suffering with an ear infection and pushed herself to the limit in this game.”
City’s Sunday afternoon win at the Academy Stadium was watched by Usain Bolt.
The Jamaican sprint king is in town to take part in Soccer Aid as captain of a world XI side.
The 100m world-record holder is said to have asked Hemp for her shirt after the game.
And the fleet-footed winger quipped it was a case of “fast meeting faster” in a humorous tweet with a picture of herself and Bolt holding her club jersey.
City defender Esme Morgan said: “Lauren ground away, scored an amazing goal and she does graft so hard.
“She’s always there fighting, pressing and battling, and I’ve heard Usain Bolt just asked for her shirt and she’s just so impressed.
Morgan added: “Lauren came up to me after the game and said ‘Esme, guess who just asked for my shirt?’
“I was racking my head through the Chelsea team thinking, ‘who has she had a battle with who might have wanted it after?’.
“When I couldn’t think of anyone, she said Usain Bolt. I couldn’t believe it! It must be the pace.
Before the match Man City had drawn six and lost five of their last 11 WSL games against Chelsea with their last win registered in May 2017.
The match was watched by Sarina Wiegman with the England boss due to name her squad before the Lionesses’ games against Brazil and Australia in April.
Emma Hayes’ side got off to a fast start in attack with Sam Kerr and Lauren James jetting into the box within the opening two minutes.
But City took control of the first spell taking advantage of a short clearance with Angeldahl firing home an angled 11th-minute opener.
Hemp made it 2-0 nineteen minutes later with a finely struck effort with the visitors facing pressure in the final third.
Chelsea, missing the presence of Millie Bright who is temporarily sidelined by injury, rang the changes before half-time.
James and Sophie Ingle made way for Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Niamh Charles with Hayes shoring up her defence and midfield.
The second spell saw the Blues attempt to boost their attacking efforts with a Maren Mjelde’s injury-time shot over the bar, among their strongest efforts.

The result saw the title holders fall to their first WSL loss of the season before their Champions League quarters decider with Lyon on Thursday.
Chelsea boss Emma Hayes said:”We’ve got to move on as quickly as possible.
“I don’t think people realise how tough it is to come up here with our third away game in seven days, really really tough.
“We’ve still got a game in hand, we need to maximise that. It’s fantastic for the league that the title race is like this.”
Taylor concurred that the title was still Chelsea’s to lose while acknowledge had taken a huge step forward in their battle to win it.
Gareth Taylor hopes to keep Man City’s title chase momentum going when his team visit Arsenal[/caption]
He added: ‘To be in this position now from where we were is top.
“We’ve not done anything yet, we’ve still got some important games to come, six games left, a lot of challenges in front of us but we go into it with high levels of confidence.
“It’s still Chelsea’s title to lose if we look at it that way but it’s a real positive step for us and gives us great confidence going into this next period.”

Crime Boss: Rockay City’s least important mode has some aggressively okay co-op heisting
I spent some time with Crime Boss: Rockay City, the upcoming Payday-esque heist FPS that sees you tackle crime and murder in either singleplayer or co-op, all with nostalgia hits from characters played by Michael Madsen and Vanilla Ice. What’s happened here is: I’ve come away with thoughts, but they’re thoughts on one of three modes that’s the least useful one to have thoughts on. The other two – the bulk of the game – weren’t playable. Still, what I did play was simplistic fun that valued chaos over stealth, with middling results. Unless the other two modes wrap up its action in more interesting ways, I’m unsure whether I can see Crime Boss racking up the cash when it releases next month.
Manchester City’s Laura Coombs ‘ready to get to work’ for England after ‘surprise’ return ahead of Arnold Clark Cup
BEING called back into the Lionesses’ fold after almost three years has come as a shock to Laura Coombs.
The Manchester City star, 32, thought her moment with England had passed before receiving a call from head coach Sarina Wiegman.
Laura Coombs is focused on bedding in and getting down to work with her England team-mates[/caption]
The Lionesses are due to compete in the Arnold Clark Cup tournament which starts on Thursday (February 16)[/caption]
This Thursday could see the experienced WSL player, whose performances have earned her a new City contract, make her first senior Lionesses appearance since 2015.
The midfield star is part of Sarina Wiegman’s 26-strong squad for the Arnold Clark Cup with England seeking to win the four-team tournament for the second year in a row.
The Lionesses will face the Korea Republic at Stadium MK at 7:45 pm on that day.
The match will be the first of their three games in the contest followed by duels with Italy and Belgium.
Coombs revealed she was the middle of having an ice bath with her City club team-mate Khadija Shaw when she received the news of her call-up for England duty
And she admits a return to international football was the furthest thought from her mind.
Coombs said: “I was surprised because it’s been so long.
“I haven’t been thinking about the international stage anymore.
“I was thinking I was going to get a break over the international period.
“I am really happy to be here. It was a shock but now I’m here, I’m ready to get to work.
“I was surprised because it’s been so long.”
This season Coombs, who joined Man City in 2019 after a two-year Liverpool spell, has been among the standout performers for Gareth Taylor’s Citizens.
The Kent-born footballer, who began her senior career at Arsenal in 2007, has made 13 top-flight appearances for City so far this term notching up four goals and three assists
And the club are now 14 games unbeaten at home and third in the league.
The midfielder, who made her international debut in October 2015 as a substitute during the Lionesses’ 2-1 loss to China, currently has two senior caps.
Her last involvement with the squad came in November 2020 when she was called up to join an international camp during Phil Neville’s reign as head coach.
Coombs added: “At the time Phil was taking a look at me and I didn’t come back.
“It’s a really weird feeling, getting that call (from Sarina) because I wasn’t expecting it and that was the honest truth.
“Now I’m here, I’m really happy to be here.
“It’s a really positive place coming off the back of the Euros (and the team winning the tournament).
“It’s an amazing group to be a part of and you just feel lucky when you’re training that the level is so high and you’re tested every day.”
Since her first England appearance almost eight years ago at club level, Coombs has helped Man City win an FA Cup and last season’s Continental Tyres trophy
And Taylor’s faith in her abilities have seen her start in 12 of the 13 WSL games City have played so far this term
A stark contrast to the midfielder making six top tier starts for the club last season.
Her most recent appearance saw her play a key role in the Citizens’ battling 2-1 defeat of Arsenal in the WSL on Saturday.
A result that saw City avenge their Conti Cup semis lost to the Gunners last Thursday.
Coombs said: “It feels really comfortable at club. I’m being pushed by the people around me and the manager every day in training.
“I feel really valued by the team and obviously, you can play and train a lot better when you’re in that headspace.
“When I’m on a good roll, I’ve just been trying to keep that going.”
With the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand commencing little over five months from now, Coombs could see in contention for a spot in Wiegman’s 23-strong squad.
Coombs added: “We’ve only had one training session so far.
“But I am excited to see what Sarina will be like in sessions going forward.
“She seems really approachable and in a manager that’s what you (as a player) want, someone you feel comfortable speaking to.
She has told me the type of player she sees me as so I have got a good idea of how she wants me to play.
Coombs’ form has seen her make 13 top-flight appearances this season as well as signing a new two-year contract with the club this month[/caption]
“It’s more of a case of just bedding into how the team is and how the team wants me to play.”
When asked what it would mean to her if she were to be included in England’s World Cup squad, Coombs said: “It would be incredible, knowing that my last cap was eight years ago.
“I just think that’s a really unique journey.
“Not many players have that time between call-ups.
“It’s something I thought had passed, so it’d be even more special.”
Knockout City’s Closure Is Part Of A “Painful Truth” Of The Games Industry, Studio Says
Knockout City‘s days are numbered, but for Velan Studios, there’s still a strong sense of optimism. Though the live-service PvP dodgeball game nears its second anniversary on May 21, it’ll only exist in its current state for another few weeks beyond that. In a February blog post, Velan revealed that Knockout City will be taken offline on June 6, with the silver-lining exception being that Velan will enable private servers to be hosted on PC thereafter.
The news came as the latest in a series of live-service game closures that defined January 2023, and looking back a few years proves this was no one-month trend. It’s getting harder to stay afloat in the competitive and ever-changing world of live-service video games. As Knockout City is a personal favorite of mine, the news hit me like, well, a dodgeball to the face. I wanted to speak to the team to find out what it’s like when a game you love working on is ending on the market’s terms rather than your own. Though those I spoke to admitted there is a sadness to the situation, they weren’t without hope for what’s next, both within Velan and across the industry–even if it’ll take a paradigm shift to get things where they need to be.
“This is my favorite game I’ve ever worked on,” game director Jeremy Russo told me. “And it’s also one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. Like, I still play this. And if you talk to most developers, none of them play their own game. But I still have a blast logging in and playing with my friends, grouping up, and going into these brawls.”
