Urgent warning as study finds vaping could put healthy young people at higher risk of developing a severe disease
VAPING puts people at a higher risk of developing severe Covid, a study has revealed.
Healthy, young e-cigarette users who caught the disease were found to have increased lung inflammation, which could cause lingering cardio-vascular complications.

The findings are from a US study of 45 non-smokers, 30 vapers and 29 tobacco smokers.
The vapers and smokers were found to have higher levels of blood plasma proteins that the virus needed to survive.
Researcher Dr Theodoros Kelesidis said: “The key message is that smoking is the worst, but vaping is not innocent.
“This has been shown for many lung diseases but not for Covid.
“It was a quite interesting and novel finding that vaping changed the levels of key proteins that the virus uses to replicate.”
Dr Kelesidis added: “E-cigarette vapers may be at higher risk than non-smokers of developing infections and inflammatory disorders of the lungs.
“Electronic cigarettes are not harmless and should be used for only the shortest time possible in smoking cessation, and not at all by non-smokers.”
Electric truck maker Rivian is reportedly developing an e-bike
Electric vehicle startup Rivian is reportedly working on an e-bike. According to Bloomberg, CEO RJ Scaringe told Rivian employees of the project during a company-wide meeting the automaker held on Friday. He said the startup had a “small group” of engineers working on a bike.
Bloomberg couldn’t confirm if Scaringe was referring to an electric motorcycle or bicycle, but the outlet notes Rivian has patents for cycling components and designs. In the past, Scaringe has said Rivian wants to expand into the micromobility market eventually. Rivian did not immediately respond to Engadget’s comment request.
The news that Rivian could be working on an e-bike comes in the same week that the company announced layoffs that would affect six percent of its workforce. The cuts represent the second major restructuring Rivian has undertaken in less than a year. The company said the move was an effort to refocus itself on scaling production of its R1T and R1S EVs and, in turn, put Rivian on the path to long-term profitability. On Friday, Scaringe reportedly told employees Rivian had spread itself thin by trying to do too much at once.
Attempting to expand into the e-bike market when the company has yet to make a profit might not make much sense, but there’s a compelling reason for Rivian to pursue that strategy. Even before the pandemic, the cycling market was growing thanks to the popularity of e-bikes. In fact, electric bikes have consistently outsold electric cars and trucks. It’s no surprise since they’re significantly cheaper to produce and thereby cost less for consumers to buy. A bike then could be what Rivian needs to become profitable sooner.
Amazon is developing a Tomb Raider series with Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known as the creator of the Emmy-winning series Fleabag, is apparently helming a new Tomb Raider show.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge is developing a Tomb Raider show for Amazon, as part of a larger deal with the company that is seeing her produce multiple projects for the retail and streaming company. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Waller-Bridge is attached to write scripts for the series, but has no plans to star in it herself. The writer-actor is also serving as executive producer on the series alongside Ryan Andolina, the former head of comedy at Amazon, as well as Amanda Greenblatt.
There’s no more details other than that on the project, so it’s obviously pretty early days currently. This isn’t the only live action adaptation of the classic series, receiving a 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie, and a later 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander. The latter was somewhat meant to be a live action reboot following on from the success of the 2013 video game reboot.
