New iPhone charging feature turns itself on by default. What it is and how to disable it.
A feature in a recent iOS update for iPhone, introduced in October, is suddenly being noticed. And not everyone likes it.
The goal of clean energy charging, introduced in iOS 16.1, is so iPhone users can rely less on fossil fuel-intensive energy sources by “selectively charging when lower carbon-emission electricity is available.”

When it’s enabled, according to Apple, “your iPhone gets a forecast of the carbon emissions in your local energy grid and uses it to charge your iPhone during times of cleaner energy production.”
The idea, Tom’s Guide reports, is that charging will be optimized when your grid uses lower carbon emissions – that either means cleaner energy sources (think wind, solar) or off-peak times (when less carbon is being emitted).
Charging may take longer, but you likely won’t notice – it takes place in conjunction with Optimized Battery Charging to learn your charging habits, and will only engage in places where you spend the most time, like work or home. So, while it may take longer to charge, this charging will likely be engaged when you’re asleep.
Also, if you’re traveling or away from a familiar area, this particular charging won’t be turned on, and your iPhone will be charging more quickly.
(For those outside the United States wondering what the hullabaloo is about – it’s a U.S.-only feature right now.)
Why is anyone upset about ‘clean energy charging’?
However, not everyone is excited about finding out about it – more than likely because it is turned on by default, and most people are only finding out months after it’s already been on iPhones.
Apple did include it in their announcement for the iOS 16.1 back in October, and according to Apple Insider, the company even trumpeted it in September prior to iOS 16 coming out. But the social media firestorm didn’t happen until this week, and it fell along political lines.
Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican from Texas, wrote: “Don’t ask where the iphones were made or rare earth materials sourced from!” Whether this is a sincere appeal to environmentalism on Roy’s part, or just trolling, the congressman is referring to real and pressing concerns about Apple’s ecological impact.
One Twitter user wrote on Twitter, “This is how the government will control your life.” Another said he “PROUDLY disabled it.”
But YouTuber Marques Brownlee is among the proponents, calling the feature “a win for the environment.”
How do I turn iPhone ‘clean energy charging’ off?
First of all, if you’d like to override the feature when it’s on, you can at any time. If it suspends charging, you’ll receive a notification on your lock screen, telling you when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you want it charged sooner, touch and hold the notification, then tap “Charge Now.”
You can also easily turn it off.

Go to Settings, then scroll down to “Battery.” Then click “Battery Health and Charging.” At the bottom of the screen, you can then toggle “Clean Energy Charging” off.

Linux Preparing To Disable Drivers For Microsoft’s RNDIS Protocol
With the next Linux kernel cycle we could see upstream disable their driver support for Microsoft’s Remote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS) protocol due to security concerns.
RNDIS is the proprietary protocol used atop USB for virtual Ethernet functionality. The support for RNDIS outside of Microsoft Windows has been mixed. RNDIS isn’t widely used today in cross-platform environments and due to security concerns the upstream Linux kernel is looking to move the RNDIS kernel drivers behind the “BROKEN” Kconfig option so they effectively become disabled in future kernel builds.
Ultimately once marked as “BROKEN” for a while, the drivers will likely be eventually removed from the upstream source tree.
Greg Kroah-Hartman wrote in a commit:
“The Microsoft RNDIS protocol is, as designed, insecure and vulnerable on any system that uses it with untrusted hosts or devices. Because the protocol is impossible to make secure, just disable all rndis drivers to prevent anyone from using them again.”

No, seriously, you should disable the 2K Launcher for Marvel’s Midnight Suns
The strategic superheroics of Marvel’s Midnight Suns might make it a Bestest Bests winner, but tragically, it does come yoked to the dreadful 2K Launcher. A few months breaking the BioShock series on the Steam Deck, this pernicious piece of software now appears to be a major cause of Midnight Suns’ stuttering issues, while seriously hobbling performance more generally.
If you’re playing via Steam, I strongly suggest following the lead of the, uh, thousands of people who’ve discovered this before me by disabling the 2K Launcher entirely. I’ve just tried this out and not only did the majority of the stuttering vanish, but my average frames per second shot up by nearly 62%. 62% better performance! From nixing a launcher that serves absolutely no purpose when you’re launching from Steam anyway! Madness.
Blizzard isn’t planning to disable Tracer over an Overwatch 2 bug that gives her a major buff
A recent bug that has given Tracer a major buff in Overwatch 2 was expected to have the character disabled, but Blizzard says that won’t be the case.
The bug in question removes any damage drop-off when she shoots at an opponent player under 20 metres. Normally the amount of damage you do scales based on how close or far away you are, but this bug means that as long as you’re within 20 metres, you’re essentially doing the maximum amount of damage, presuming that your aim is good.
It’s generally been expected that Tracer would be disabled as a result, but as spotted by PCGamesN, a comment from the game’s director Aaron Keller on a Reddit post about the bug has explained she won’t be taken out of the game.
Latest iOS 16.2 Beta Lets You Disable Wallpaper and Notifications for Always On Display
There are now two toggles for disabling wallpaper or notifications when always on display is active. The options can be reached by opening up the Settings app, selecting Display & Brightness, and then going to the Always On Display section.
Toggling off wallpaper will remove your wallpaper when you have always on display enabled, and toggling off notifications will prevent notifications from showing, leaving just the time and widgets if you have widgets installed on your Lock Screen.
The updated option makes for a much simpler always on display interface for those who want a more minimal look that may also save some battery life.
