Meta faces $402 million EU fine over Instagram’s privacy settings for children
Meta has been fined €405 million ($402 million) by the Irish Data Protection Commission for its handling of children’s privacy settings on Instagram, which violated Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As Politico reports, it’s the second-largest fine to come out of Europe’s GDPR laws, and the third (and largest) fine levied against Meta by the regulator.
A spokesperson for the DPC confirmed the fine, and said additional details about the decision would be available next week. The fine stems from the photo sharing app’s privacy settings on accounts run by children. The DPC had been investigating Instagram over children’s use of business accounts, which made personal data like email addresses and phone numbers publicly visible. The investigation also covered Instagram’s policy of defaulting all new accounts, including teens, to be publicly viewable.
“This inquiry focused on old settings that we updated over a year ago, and we’ve since released many new features to help keep teens safe and their information private,” a Meta spokesperson told Politico in a statement. “Anyone under 18 automatically has their account set to private when they join Instagram, so only people they know can see what they post, and adults can’t message teens who don’t follow them. We engaged fully with the DPC throughout their inquiry, and we’re carefully reviewing their final decision.”
The fine, which Meta could still appeal, comes as Instagram has faced intense scrutiny over its handling of child safety issues. The company halted work on an Instagram Kids app last year following a whistleblower’s claims that meta ignored its own research indicating the app can have a negative impact on some teens’ mental health. Since then, the app has added more safety features, including changing default settings on teen accounts to private.
Updated with additional details from the DPC.
Married at First Sight UK 2022 RECAP: Bride faces huge backlash from mum of groom as she breaks silence on height jibes
MARRIED at First Sight UK star Thomas Hartley’s mum has slammed “vile wife” Whitney Hughes in an explosive rant.
Following Friday’s episode, Thomas – who was joined up with Adrian Sanderson in the current MAFS season – took to Instagram to discuss the episode.
The mental health care assistant was in the car with his mum when Whitney Hughes came up in conversation.
Whitney has been slammed by viewers for her “rude” behaviour towards new husband Duka.
She made a quip about her handsome husband not being tall enough.
Thomas’s mum Helen said: “I’m not being funny Tom let’s not pretend. You all knew what you were signing up for.”
He replied: “No. I mean you’re not used to dealing with that many people in a setting when you’re not with your family and all of that. I’m not making excuses.”
Helen chimed in: “You are.”
Thomas added: “Well I learnt personally from it. I grew a lot.”
Helen replied: “I accept that but she come in, without knowing anyone and was absolutely vile.
“Why on earth did she go on it? It’s certainly not for frame. You can tell it’s not for fame because what would she be famous for? Being an absolute c***?”

Everton vs Liverpool derby set for fireworks in the dugouts as under-pressure Lampard faces enigmatic Klopp
JURGEN KLOPP has already experienced some serious touchline fireworks this week.
And under-pressure Frank Lampard is unlikely to calm things down as he fights for his future in the white heat of a Merseyside derby.

Frank Lampard was seething with Jurgen Klopp when he was Chelsea boss and his team lost to Liverpool in 2020[/caption]

There won’t be any love lost on the respective benches come game day[/caption]
Back in July 2020, when Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy for the only time, Klopp’s title-winners were presented with their silverware at a largely empty Anfield after a thrilling and feisty 5-3 victory over Lampard’s Chelsea.
Lampard went viral after an X-rated bust-up with Klopp and his spiky No 2 Pep Lijnders — back when behind-closed-doors pandemic football allowed us full access to touchline effing and blinding.
There will be a roaring full house to drown out any industrial language between Klopp and Lampard at Goodison Park today.
And Everton chief Lampard needs all the volume he can get to lift his winless side, who only narrowly avoided plunging down into the Championship in May.

Lampard, who played in the Jose Mourinho side that contested an intense rivalry with Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool in the Noughties — is sure to be pumped up when hostilities against the Reds resume.
Lamps position is under severe scrutiny after just seven months at Goodison and he has since admitted he was ‘misguided’ to blow his top at Klopp two years ago.
But after Mateo Kovacic had been penalised for a strong challenge on Sadio Mane, Lijnders started a row with Lampard, who responded by yelling: “It’s not a fing foul. I’m not asking you, so shut up.”
When Klopp came to Lijnders’ defence, Lampard told the Liverpool manager: “F*** off you as well. Only title you’ve ever won and you’re f***ing giving it the big’un. F*** off.”

Both managers have come under a bit of pressure already this season[/caption]

That would have been music to the ears of Chelsea fans as their club’s three-time title-winner gave Liverpool a slap-down on their big night.
Yesterday, Lampard admitted: “As a manager you do have to have a certain edge on the touchline as it is all about winning.
“Yes, things may have got a little bit heated between us in the past but at the end you still shake hands and it’s done. But I also know that you have to stand up for yourself and do your job.
“I had a taste of a Merseyside derby last season at Anfield.
“And these derbies are different from London derbies because there really is more of a local feel.
“This will be my first at Goodison knowing we’ve got a home crowd behind us. My players have to match the intensity that our fans will bring.”
Lampard is not alone in being drawn into touchline flare-ups with Klopp and Lijnders — who are widely regarded as insufferable by rival bosses and match officials.

Jurgen Klopp loved celebrating a late winner against Newcastle[/caption]

But Newcastle were less-than-impressed with how Liverpool’s bench celebrated[/caption]
Newcastle’s coaching staff were driven into a rage during their last-gasp defeat at Anfield on Wednesday — with a missile being thrown towards Klopp by a member of Eddie Howe’s backroom staff after Fabio Carvalho’s 98th-minute winner.
At Anfield late last season, Lampard did his best to rile Liverpool again when struggling Everton frustrated Liverpool’s pursuit of Manchester City with an ultra-defensive Mourinho-style bus-parking display.
But after 62 goalless minutes, Everton were beaten 2-0, having enjoyed only 18 per cent of possession.
This time, Everton are desperate to put one over on their Scouse rivals — even though three successive draws and a couple of deadline-day signings have gone a small way towards lifting the Goodison gloom.
The derby is a big fight, we cannot ignore that, but you have to play football as well. That’s a real challenge
Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool, who failed to win their first three Prem games, have recorded successive, but contrasting, home wins — a 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth, followed by a last-gasp winner to pip Newcastle 2-1.
But despite losing only one of his 15 Merseyside derbies, and never at Goodison, Klopp is fully aware of the unique nature of this fixture, which is no longer — if it ever truly was — ‘the friendly derby’.
Klopp said: “The derby is a big fight, we cannot ignore that, but you have to play football as well. That’s a real challenge .
“The Newcastle game was super- intense and showed us what we will have to expect against Everton.
“I’ve had 15 Merseyside derbies. The games were all different but always intense, a lot of fight, and the more you can play some football in between these moments of fighting, the more likely you can get more from the game.”

Both Merseyside managers are happy with their clubs’ deadline-day dealings.
Everton re-signed Idrissa Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain and nabbed Manchester United’s James Garner, who helped Nottingham Forest win promotion last term, as well as keeping Anthony Gordon out of Chelsea’s clutches.
On Gordon, Lampard insisted: “I was always pretty cool about it — it never got close. This shows where we are going as a club. I’m happy with the business we’ve done.”
And Liverpool, without the injured midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita, signed Brazilian star Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus — although the 26-year-old former Barcelona playmaker is unlikely to get international clearance in time to play.
Klopp said: “Arthur is a really good footballer, with a very exciting career already and is coming into the best age for a footballer.

“He can give us rhythm. He is a really good passer, he’s safe on the ball. It didn’t work out 100 per cent at Juve but his potential, for sure, is still there.”
LIKELY LINE-UPS — EVERTON: Pickford, Patterson, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Gueye, Onana, Iwobi, Gray, Maupay, Gordon.
LIVERPOOL (likely): Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Elliott, Fabinho, Milner, Salah, Nunez, Diaz.
Crypto CEO Behind $2.5 Billion ‘Rug Pull’ Arrested, Faces 40,564 Years In Prison
It’s not the whole story, either. Cryptocrime analysis firm Chainanalysis addressed Thorex specifically in its overview of 2021, in the wider context of a total $2.8 billion worth of crypto scams over this year being ‘rug pulls’: wherein a seemingly legitimate business is set up, operates as normal for a while, then suddenly all the money is gone. It’s large-scale fraud. “We should note that roughly 90% of the total value lost to rug pulls in 2021 can be attributed to one fraudulent centralized exchange, Thodex, whose CEO disappeared soon after the exchange halted users’ ability to withdraw funds,” says the Chainanalysis report. That works out at an estimate of around $2.5 billion of crypto.
Six people have already been jailed for their role in Thodex, including family members of Ozer, while 20 other prosecutions are ongoing. The Turkish daily Harriyet reports that state prosecutors are out to set an example: “A prison sentence of 40,564 years is sought for each of these 21 people, including Ozer, as over 2,000 people are included in the indictment as complainants.”

Democratic Senate hopeful John Fetterman is calling on President Joe Biden to decriminalize marijuana before visiting Pennsylvania next week.
“It’s long past time that we finally decriminalize marijuana,” Fetterman said in a Monday statement. “The president needs to use his executive authority to begin descheduling marijuana, I would love to see him do this prior to his visit to Pittsburgh.”
Biden is expected to travel to two key midterm swing states next week — Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — to “celebrate Labor Day and the dignity of American workers,” according to a Monday White House advisory. When in Pittsburgh, Biden is set to meet with Fetterman, the Democrats’ pick to beat Republican opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz.
