DaBaby may have watched his first three albums soar to top 10 glory on the Billboard 200 (with two even topping the tally), but his fourth – the September 23-released ‘Baby on Baby 2’ – doesn’t seem poised to deliver a similar commercial performance.
See what we mean inside.
DaBaby’s ‘Baby on Baby 2’
First Week Sales (SPS): 17,200 units
Billboard 200 Debut: #34
Released as the conceptual follow-up to his 2019 debut LP, ‘Baby on Baby,’ ‘BOB2’ comes as his first studio effort released since he was met with backlash for making what many deemed to be derogatory comments about the LGBTQ+ community and people living with HIV/AIDS last year. The opus also comes as his first to enter the chart race without a Hot 100 top 40 hit to support it.
The impact of the controversy seems to live on as the project, despite being promoted via multiple music videos for its housed tracks, did not enjoy that same level of support via a media run like the three studio efforts before it. Absence of said visibility – which DaBaby (born Jonathan Kirk) claimed was due to being ‘blackballed’ by the industry – led it to sell a reported 17,200 total units last week.
That figure may have bested its predicted first-week sales, but it still comes as a nearly 87% drop from the first week of its chart-topping predecessor – 2020’s ‘Blame It On Baby.’
The new album’s debut at #34 on the Billboard 200 comes as the lowest first-week opening for any DaBaby LP and follows 2019’s ‘Baby on Baby’ (#25 premiere), 2019’s ‘Kirk’ (#1 premiere), and 2020’s ‘Blame It On Baby’ (#1 premiere).
