Tricky, blobby platformer The True Slime King stands out in a crowded field
Maybe it’s because I’ve been bouncing between a lot of weighty games lately, but I’ve found a great diversion in The True Slime King, a simple three button platformer that recently left early access.
Speaking pedantically, this isn’t “as simple as it gets”, but you’ll get what I mean if I describe it that way anyway. You move and jump, dodging spikes and lasers and ISO 13370 compliant death pits, and ideally collecting all the hard to reach thingies along the way. These are far from my favourite genre, but I’ve played enough to realise I’m partial to a good one, and this is a great one.

Legendary LOUP GAROU Encountered in Swampy Louisiana Oil Field
A new oil field night watchman is walking along his tour route in the swamp and bayou late at night. He then encounters an unknown beast that threatens and chases him up an old derrick.
A reader forwarded the following account. It was told to him by his father several years ago:
“It is early evening as the sun is setting in Oil City, Louisiana as the night watchman made his way to his post. He was new on the job and his post was at one of the many old derricks. This location is near Cato Lake, as well as the surrounding swamps and marshlands.
He enjoyed his new job. All you just had to do in order to make it through the night was to avoid falling asleep. This derrick was furthest back from a particularly boggy section of swamp. Since he had no boat available to pull through the muck he decided to walk along the bank. It would take a little longer but the trek through the swamp wouldn’t be anything he hadn’t done before and he wanted to make a good impression to hopefully move up to a higher-paying position on a day crew.
The thick canopy of trees blotted out what little light was left and he paused to light a kerosene lantern as he continued on. As he held the lantern high he looked into the darkness. There was nothing he could see among the shadows. He thought that he heard something moving in the darkness, but decided that it was his mind playing tricks. He began to walk again.
It wasn’t long before he heard it again. This time, there were steps mirroring his own, just to the side and behind him. So he stopped and he turned once again holding the lantern high. “Who is that?” he called out. He didn’t receive an answer. His pace quickened as he began to walk again and he heard the steps begin, once more mirroring his own. Now he heard sloshing in the nearby water. He was becoming unnerved. He started to walk even faster, catching his feet on exposed cypress roots.
The sloshing steps were growing closer. His anger was building over the fear. He stopped again. “Who the hell is that?” he screamed. There was no answer. An uneasy quiet had descended over the swamp. He could hear the beating of his own heart and his quickened breath.
Then, from the darkness, came a low deep growl that reverberated in his chest. His blood ran cold. Without thinking he turned and ran! He had nothing to defend himself. His only hope was to reach the old derrick. He ran through the water and muck. He heard it following him. It crashed through the undergrowth. Water was splashing as the loud footsteps continued their pursuit. It sounded as if it were upon him when he finally reached the derrick and began to climb. He dropped the lantern. Fear and desperation caused him to climb. As he climbed higher an unearthly howl emanated from just beneath him. He thought his heart would stop as he wrapped his legs around the crossbeams of the structure. It howled again and began shaking the derrick with unimaginable strength. It circled him shaking and howling. The tears streamed down the watchman’s face.
He desperately hung on until the golden glow of the sun eventually began to rise. He heard the unknown beast walking off with slow methodical strides through the water. He looked below him, barely catching a glimpse of a tall bipedal canine-like creature moving away from him in the dim light. As the darkness vanished and dawn lit the swamp below he could see its footprints in the mud where it had circled him.
He stayed where he was until the day crew came. It took some time to coax him down and after hearing his story and seeing the footprints the men were at a loss as to what this thing could be. They sought out an older gentleman who had lived there all his life and he knew everything about the woods, creeks, and the bayous in the area. He had looked around the area and then looked at the tracks. A serious and stern countenance came over his face. They asked what he thought it was? He replied “Loup Garou.”
Silence fell on the group as the old man pointed his finger in the direction of the tracks going deeper and disappearing into the dark cypress swamp. Then he said, “The Loup Garou is real. It’s been a long time since I heard of one around here. But, It’s real.”

Damar Hamlin injury updates – Players in tears as Buffalo Bills safety collapses on field during Cincinnati Bengals game
BUFFALO Bills player Damar Hamlin has suffered an injury during Monday night’s NFL game that has reportedly required on-field CPR.
Players and coaches from both the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals were visibly shaken as emergency responders tended to Hamlin.

Hamlin took a hit to the chest from Bengals player Tee Higgins at about 8.55pm.
The 24-year-old safety got up after the play and then collapsed onto the ground.
Medics immediately ran onto the field to tend to Hamlin.
He was put on a backboard and stretcher and was given oxygen as he was loaded into an ambulance, per ESPN.
The ambulance transported Hamlin out of Paycor Stadium at 9.25pm and has reportedly taken him to University of Cincinnati hospital, per FOX19’s Joe Danneman.
Danneman also reported that Hamlin “has a pulse, but is not breathing on his own.”
He also reportedly required automated external defibrillator (AED) on the field.
As of 10pm local time, Hamlin has reportedly been intubated and listed in critical condition, per FOX19’s Tricia Macke.
Hamlin’s family, including his mother, came down from the stands and is reportedly with him, according to ESPN.
The game has been temporarily suspended as of 9.18pm local time to allow both teams to regroup.
A decision about a possible game postponement will be made by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, ESPN reports.
Players and coaches were seen crying and had gathered around Hamlin and the emergency responders tending to him.
Many players appeared to be in shock and were embracing one another.
The incident occurred with 5:58 left to play in the first quarter.
It is unclear what type of injury or medical emergency Hamlin sustained.
Hamlin picked in the sixth round of the 2021 draft by the Bills.
He played in 14 regular season games for the Bills last year as a rookie.
Through 16 games, Hamlin has recorded 91 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The Buffalo Bills tweeted: “Bills Mafia is with you, @HamlinIsland.”
Dozens of NFL teams and other major sports organizations have tweeted words of support for Hamlin.
JJ Watt, who earlier this season announced via his Twitter that he had gone into atrial fibrillation, tweeted words of support for Hamlin.
“The game is not important. Damar Hamlin’s life is important. Please be ok. Please,” Watt wrote.
Many current and former NFL players have tweeted out thoughts and prayers for Hamlin.
Some have also called for video of the incident to not be shared out of respect for Hamlin and his family.
“Please don’t share the video of the Damar Hamlin play. Share this because we are all Praying for him and his family,” tweeted Robert Griffin III.

Linux Foundation’s ‘AgStack Project’ Plans First Dataset of the World’s Agricultural Field Boundaries
And this week that Foundation announced a new open source code base for creating and maintaining a global dataset that’s a kind of registry for the boundaries of agricultural fields to enable field-level analytics like carbon tracking, food traceability, and crop production.
AgStack’s Asset Registry dataset, the first of its kind in the world, is built and continuously updated using data from satellites and actual field registrations that contain information on boundaries, not ownership, which will then train machine learning models to ascertain more boundaries. Precise knowledge of field boundaries can help farmers, agricultural companies, and the public sector to monitor and manage crop production, study management practices (crop rotations, cover cropping, tillage, irrigation), determinants of productivity, pest and disease spread, and species diversity. By sharing reusable agricultural data, new insights can also be gleaned for global food security research and innovation.
Crop field boundaries are the fundamental unit of addressing such datasets…. By leveraging computer science and artificial intelligence, members will create, curate, and maintain global field boundaries as an open source digital public good available for anyone to use. The project has the potential to unlock the next revolution of digital agri-services in public and private sectors, especially for smallholder farmers…. “We think that a public field boundary dataset can help turbocharge a lot of smart people and businesses focused on improving agriculture and food security around the world,” said Professor David Lobell at The Center on Food Security and the Environment at Stanford University, who hosted the original research as the Gloria and Richard Kushel Director of the Center on Food Security and the Environment at Stanford University and the Benjamin Page Professor of Earth System Science. “We’re excited to help bring this dataset to life.”
All code will be contributed under an open source license and will be governed by the AgStack community within the Linux Foundation, using open source and permissively licensed tools and processes.
It’s using code funded in part by the NASA Harvest Consortium.
