Valencell promises blood pressure monitoring in a finger clip
Valencell, best known around these parts for making optical heart rate sensors for fitness tech, has turned up to CES with something new. The company is showing off a new fingertip monitor that, it says, will offer “cuffless” blood pressure monitoring. Rather than inflating a sleeve around the top of your arm, you’ll be able to monitor your blood pressure with a fingertip clip. That’s currently commonly used to measure your heart rate both at home, and in medical settings.
The as-yet unnamed device is pending FDA clearance, but Valencell has explained that it uses PPG sensors to measure blood flow patterns. This information is then run through an algorithm which calculates the movement against both a dataset containing 7,000 patient records. That’s then run up against the user’s age, weight, gender and height to produce a blood pressure measurement. And you’ll get both Diastolic and Systolic results presented on the device’s built-in screen, and pushed to the companion mobile app.
Much as Valencell say its work is unique, we’ve seen at least one other system that uses PPG and algorithms in place of a cuff. At the start of 2022, the University of Missouri showed off its own finger clip that harnesses a pair of PPG sensors, one on either side of the finger. That system was, by its creators own admission, far less accurate for diastolic measures, given the need to control for a person’s age, gender and weight.
Valencell seems to suggest that it has solved those issues with more data, to the point where you won’t need to calibrate its monitor with an initial cuff reading. That’s either some staggering bravado, or a sign that we’re getting better at the nitty-gritty of healthcare monitoring. The company says that it could offer a new weapon in the war against hypertension, and it hopes to offer it for use in clinical settings for remote patient monitoring or chronic care management.
But that’ll all have to wait until the FDA has run its cautious eye over the hardware — which could take much of the year — but if it offers its blessing, Valencell says it’ll sell the product for $99.
I’m semi-retired but I make extra £7.2k with my easy side hustle – I don’t even lift a finger
A PENSIONER has revealed how he makes £600 a month with a side hustle – without lifting a finger.
Edward, from London, is one of the many who are using car sharing platforms to allow them to make money from renting their vehicle.
Car sharing can earn you thousands of pounds a year[/caption]
It’s been described as like ‘Airbnb for cars’ and keyless technology means that people don’t even need to meet person who will driver their car.
With millions of people struggling in the cost of living crisis, many are looking for easy ways to make extra money and so are turning to car sharing.
There are few apps out there but Edward is using Karshare.
“I’ve found it more productive than I expected with regards to earnings and am currently earning over £600 per month,” he told the Express.

“It’s been easier than expected due to the keyless technology – I don’t have to do anything; the keyless tech operated through the app is safe and secure.
“I don’t have to be around to meet renters in order to share the car, they gain access via the app.”
Another pensioner who’s doing the same side hustle is John Peate, who earns £5,000 per year.
He lives in Coventry with his wife but spends a lot of time abroad visiting his now grown-up children.

“Our car is sitting outside our house not being used at all when we’re away, and isn’t used much even when we’re here,” he said.
“We have family over in South Africa and they have a similar company over there which allows people to share their cars.”
According to Andy Hibbert, the boss of car-sharing platform Karshare, said the idea has really taken off over the last 12 months.
“They’re either not commuting to the office as much, or thinking about whether they need two cars in their household.
“Making money from an unused car which is sitting outside doing nothing seems like a viable, sensible option for many.”
We recently reported how driver Salman Rafiq has made £5,300 hiring out his car to stranger by using Karshare.

The 2021 Apple TV Siri Remote Almost Had a Finger Rest
The finger rest would have been above the Apple logo on the Siri Remote, but Apple eliminated this design element before introducing the accessory. The version that launched has a smooth back with no finger rest cutout at all.
Interesting… 2021 Siri Remote submitted to the FCC had an indent on the back, presumably for resting your finger. Wonder why this didn’t make it to the final model pic.twitter.com/fFnQv85zy6

There are also some other small design differences, including a different design for the IR sensor at the top of the remote and some slight changes to the icons on the buttons. It is not clear why Apple decided to eliminate the divot at the back of the remote, but removing it must have been a last minute design decision.
The updated Siri Remote is a marked improvement over the original Siri Remote, featuring a larger aluminum body and a touch-enabled clickpad with gesture support instead of a smooth touch surface. There is a dedicated power button that was a welcome change, as well as a Siri button on the side of the device.
Multiple rumors indicated that Apple could add Find My to the Siri Remote, but that also did not happen and there is no sign that it was an intended feature in the FCC filing.

Ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery gives fan the finger after comments about his English and failed spell at Gunners
CHEEKY Unai Emery flipped the bird at football fans giving him stick in a hilarious comeback.
The former Arsenal manager failed to win over the Gunners fans with a tough 18-month spell at the Emirates.

The Spaniard flipped the bird at the trolls[/caption]
As well as struggles on the pitch, many mercilessly trolled the Spaniard for his grasp of the English language.
However, he has very much proved his worth as a manager either side of his North London nightmare by winning the Europa League four times – including with Villarreal in 2021.
Supporters lined up outside St Mary’s yesterday after the LaLiga side’s 2-1 pre-season friendly win over Southampton.
As they asked for autographs, one said: “Can you say, ‘Unai Emery, good ebening,’” in reference to the way he always started press conferences.

Emery gave a polite smile and then one quipped: “Unai Emery I think you done very good at Arsenal.”
And the former Real Sociedad midfielder, 50, responded fantastically by sticking up his middle finger at the lads, who couldn’t believe what they saw.
To really rub it in, Emery waved the digit right in their faces, eyeballing the camera and nodding.
And fans on social media totally backed the Spaniard for his understandable reaction.

Another wrote: “Tbf imagine taking the time to learn a language just to be mocked.”
A third added: “Nah I’ve not seen a middle finger put up with so much distain in a long time.”
And a final user commented: “Fair play to him disrespectful little dweebs.”

Arsenal technical director Edu, though, cited replacing Emery with compatriot Mikel Arteta as a major breakthrough in the club’s upward trajectory.
Edu told SunSport: “With all due respect, the project really started when we decided to change Unai.
“That was my first planning, to go to the board and explain the reason to go in a different direction. We needed to have a coach with a very clear plan and structure of how he wanted the team to play.
“We had to be really brave to change the coach in the middle of the season because a lot of internal people were telling me, ‘We’ve never done that before’.
“But if you’ve diagnosed that change is necessary, the decision has to be made quickly. It hurts but don’t postpone something that must be done.

“Then I started to interview coaches and as soon as I went to meet Mikel at his house, I could see this guy had a plan.
“And now he’s going to make the club’s life easier because with him as coach I could give Arsenal a five-year plan.”
