Scientists gave a robot a sense of smell with locust antennae and AI
In 2023, there are cameras and microphones that match and surpass the capabilities of human sight and sound. But for all of our technological advancements, humans haven’t quite managed to build a better nose. After all, evolution has had millions of years to perfect the receptors humans, animals and inspects use to identify odors. But, with the help of nature, scientists may have made a breakthrough on that front.
In a study published Monday in the journal Biosensor and Bioelectronics, a group of researchers from Tel Aviv University (via Neuroscience News) said they recently created a robot that can identify a handful of smells with 10,000 times more sensitivity than some specialized electronics. They describe their robot as a bio-hybrid platform (read: cyborg). It features a set of antennae taken from a desert locust that is connected to an electronic system that measures the amount of electrical signal produced by the antennae when they detect a smell. They paired the robot with an algorithm that learned to characterize the smells by their signal output. In this way, the team created a system that could reliably differentiate between eight “pure” odors, including geranium, lemon and marzipan, and two mixtures of different smells. The scientists say their robot could one day be used to detect drugs and explosives.
A YouTube video from Tel Aviv University claims the robot is a “scientific first,” but last June researchers from Michigan State University published research detailing a system that used surgically-altered locusts to detect cancer cells. Back in 2016, scientists also tried turning locusts into bomb-sniffing cyborgs. What can I say, after millennia of causing crop failures, the pests could finally be useful for something.
Boring Company Gave Free Rides Through Its Underground Vegas Tunnel During CES
The service was free during the early January event, offering 115,000 CES attendees a chance to reduce a 45-minute LVCC cross-campus walk time down to 2 minutes, not including short waits for Tesla vehicles with drivers. “I call shotgun!” one gleeful CES attendee said while waiting in line. Once inside the white Tesla vehicle, the man used his phone to video the entire trip, marking its sudden acceleration to maximum speed in the single lane white tunnel, an experience the design engineer likened to a slick amusement park ride over a tunnel race track….
Construction is expected to begin in 2023 on the 29-mile Vegas Loop tunnel network approved by the county in 2021 to ultimately connect 51 stations throughout the resort corridor. In 2022, the city of Las Vegas unanimously approved bringing the Vegas Loop to city limits, which increases the system to 34 miles and 55 stations in all.
The dream is for Vegas Loop to eventually connect to Los Angeles, a distance of 270 miles.

I’m a size 16 and tried Kim Kardashian’s Skims swim – it gave ‘mama belly deliciousness,’ I felt like a goddess
A WOMAN has tried on a Skims swimsuit on her size 16 body and says it gave “mama belly deliciousness.”
Fashion TikToker Bonnie Wyrick felt like a goddess in Kim Kardashian’s swimsuit line.
Bonnie’s TikTok videos consist of outfit tips, body-positive content, and hauls, like the one she posted for Skims Swim.
“I’m such a sucker for pink,” she said as she tried on the $88 Swim Cut Out Monokini in the shade, taffy.
The TikToker paired the tummy-baring one-piece with the Swim Sarong Skirt for $78.
“This color is insane,” Bonnie said in the video.
“It highlights a little mama belly deliciousness here.”
She also added that she loved the skirt, which is made out of swimsuit material.
“It’s really thick on the bottom so I can be a little covered up but still sassy,” she shared.
Bonnie then tried on the Shaping Bandeau Bikini Top for $38 with the matching $36 Swim Micro Tanga Bikini Bottoms.
“I feel so good in this,” she shared. “I normally don’t show my belly button but I just really, really love this.”
Bonnie covered up the bottoms with the Skims Swim Sarong Skirt in a bronze shade.
“I just feel like a bronze goddess,” she said.
“I feel so good — I love it.”
Bonnie later posted another video of her sitting poolside in the bronze swimsuit with a drink in her hand.
She wrote in the video: “When you finally realize no one cares if you are a chubby girl in a bikini and can just live your life.”
23 Years Ago, Amazon Gave Barnes & Noble a 1-Click Patent Lawsuit For Xmas
“The patent system is designed to encourage innovation on behalf of customers,” Amazon had written in its 1999 press release, arguing that in 1997 its 1-Click technology “was a significant step forward for online shoppers that required thousands of hours of effort.” It’s been noted that B&N first threw down the litigation gauntlet, slapping Amazon with a lawsuit over its marketing claim as “World’s Largest Bookstore” just days before Amazon’s IPO in May 1997. USPTO continuity records show a ‘child’ patent of the original Method and System for Placing a Purchase Order Via a Communications Network patent finally expired due to non-payment of maintenance fees on 10/10/2022, more than 25 years after Amazon applied for its 1-Click patent on 9/22/1997.

Chucky Season 2 Gave Us the Child’s Play Christmas We’ve Always Wanted
It was festive, it was gory, it was campy, and it left the door open in the likely event Chucky gets a season three. The Christmas-themed “Chucky Actually” wrapped up a satisfying season two for Don Mancini’s horror comedy, but if the show does return, it’ll be without several of the show’s core characters so far.
