HBO turns ‘Mario Kart’ into gritty psych drama in ‘SNL’ sketch
It seems the success of HBO’s The Last of Us has gotten to the heads of the executives, who are now making plans to reimagine another hugely popular video game into a gritty psychological drama. And that game is…Mario Kart?
Yes, that’s right, Saturday Night Live presented to us the fictional trailer for “Mario Kart,” a gritty post-apocalyptic drama featuring host Pedro Pascal as the titular Mario. In a world devastated by Bowser (Kenan Thompson), Mario must escort Princess Peach (Chloe Fineman) to Rainbow Road. It will also star Luigi (Mikey Day), Yoshi (Bowen Yang), and Toad (Marcello Hernández) as potential allies who also just so happen to be bisexual.
From the high production value, intentional overacting, and attention to detail, this is quite honestly one of the best-produced sketches in recent SNL memory. It’s worth a watch, even to just hear Pascal say “It’s a me, Mario,” in a gruff, action-protagonist voice.
Deadpool 3 Director Promises Entry Into The MCU Will Be Raw And Gritty
Since Ryan Reynolds announced that Deadpool 3 will be Hugh Jackman’s last real foray as Wolverine, as well as introduce Wade and company to the MCU, there has been a lot of fan speculation of tone regarding the level of violence that Disney would allow for its films. Deadpool 1 and 2 are on Disney+ already, and those have an absurd collective body count, but would the third entry be any different?
Director Shawn Levy (Free Guy) recently confirmed that the Merc With A Mouth will continue his style of hacking and slashing with sarcasm and obscenities when Deadpool joins the MCU properly saying that Reynold is his “North Star” in keeping things raw, gritty, and grounded.
“We are writing, rewriting, developing, and prepping Deadpool every day now. It is such a blast to laugh every day,” Levy tells Collider. “It is so delicious to hear and write and come up with these scenes where people are just talking foul. And the violence is in your face and hardcore, and it’s very much a Deadpool movie.”
‘SNL’ and Keke Palmer reboot ‘Kenan & Kel’ with a gritty twist
Not every old show from the 90s needs a gritty reimaging. Kenan Thompson probably agrees with that too after he’s convinced by Saturday Night Live host Keke Palmer to reboot the Nickelodeon classic Kenan & Kel as “Kenan & Kelly.”
Goodbye Good Burger and hello to Rigby’s, the new convenience store where Kenan and Kelly work at. Kelly gets up to similar hijinks as Kel once did except these moments are immediately followed by dramatic monologue and confessions of infidelity and secret babies. As Kenan notes during the on-set interviews, “We just started and I think we have a tone issue.”
Will this be the performance and the show that’ll get Keke Palmer her fated Emmy Award? Definitely not. But at least we got to see Kenan and Kel reunite on screen again.
