Microsoft Flight Sim boss confirms more crossover content like Halo’s Pelican and Top Gun Maverick
One of the most surprising announcements in the world of gaming this year was June’s reveal that the Pelican, the iconic troop carrier vehicle from the Halo series, was being added to Microsoft Flight Simulator. The reason for the surprise is in the name – it’s a simulator, and the Pelican doesn’t really exist.
In a wide-ranging chat with Microsoft Flight Simulator boss Jorg Neumann, VG247 decided to check in on how, six months later, the unprecedented move to add the Dropship 77 Troop Carrier aka the D77-TC, aka the ‘Pelican’, has been received by the fanbase. The answer is perhaps just as surprising – it hasn’t just been well-received, but so well received that the Flight Sim team will offer similar content in the future.
The Halo tie-in wasn’t this new version of Flight Simulator’s first crossover of course – with the huge Game Pass success first featuring an add-on pack to celebrate the release of Top Gun Maverick in theaters. In many ways, it’s with Top Gun that this story begins.
Halo’s Identity Problem Began With an Admirable Mess
It’s a law of nature that eventually, every long-running game franchise will have a particular entry that gets dinged for straying too far from what made it so fun in the first place. Your Super Mario Sunshine, your Dragon Age II, Assassin’s Creed III, and so on. Whether or not that opinion changes more favorably over…
Halo’s Warthog Is Real And Drivable, If You’re A Small Child
I cannot believe I’m writing this, but Microsoft has released a ride-on Halo Warthog designed for kids ages three and up. The 24-volt vehicle has two seats and even has the Gauss Cannon on the back, which has been rigged with a laser tag blaster. It comes with a vest so you can chase after the person wearing it. The Warthog is available to purchase exclusively at Walmart for a whopping $498.
I’m not sure if three-year-olds even know about Halo. To investigate, I asked my 19-month-old son if he wanted to play Halo Infinite. His response? “Elmo.” Though this wasn’t a scientific study, it might signal that parents will want this ride-on Warthog more than their youngsters. The sad truth is that parents won’t be able to fit behind the wheel. I already asked my wife if I could buy the Warthog “for our son,” but she, unsurprisingly, told me no.
Back to the Warthog itself. It looks pretty darn cool, an authentic replica of the iconic vehicle from the Halo series. It has off-road terrain wheels, operable headlights, and sound effects like a blaster noise and an engine revving. The Gauss Cannon rotates and features “weapon” voice commands. There’s even a dashboard that displays the Warthog’s “health.”
