Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom review – Nintendo hasn’t blown its Fuse
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lets you ride a heavy metal skeleton horse, eat cooked rocks, and stuff fairies in your pockets. And these aren’t even core aspects of the game.
There are so many silly, or cool, or ridiculous nuggets like this tucked away in Side Adventures or thumbed into secluded corners of the vast map. It was during one such side quest – hot on the trail of the aforementioned skeleton horse – that I said to myself: “This would be on the back of the box of most games.”
Tears of the Kingdom is so successful because it marries an impressive sense of scale with a mechanical granularity that means you can always interact with its wide-open sandbox in creative, surprising ways.
Destiny 2 season passes are getting more expensive, but Bungie hasn’t said why
Bungie has announced that it is raising the cost of Destiny 2’s season passes by 20%, though in real world money it will technically cost more.
Earlier this week Bungie put out a blog post discussing the usual kind of updates you’d expect for the game. Most notably, though, it also announced that starting with Destiny 2 Season 21, passes will now cost an extra 200 Silver, one of the game’s currencies. Previously season passes would cost just 1000 Silver, but it’s now being raised to 1200, and season passes with the additional 10 rank bundle going up from 2000 to 2200. The biggest problem there is that the only way to buy Silver is by using real world money.
Bundles of 1100 Silver cost £8.49/$10, which is obviously 100 Silver short of what you need to buy a Season pass. You can get bundles of 500 for £4.49/$5, but that now means you’ll have to spend that extra money to get the season pass at all, if you don’t have any Silver left in your account. It’s an odd choice to make, and Bungie didn’t explain why it is doing so in the blog post.
Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake’s raytracing options are gone, but Capcom hasn’t said why
In a recent update for the remakes of both Resident Evil 2 and 3, Capcom has removed raytracing options for the games, but no one’s quite sure why.
Last week players noticed that the most recent update for the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes took out any options related to raytracing in the PC versions of the game, without an explanation for doing so. This was pointed out by Reddit user pmc64 on the pcgaming subreddit, who noted that both games are “still DirectX 12,” but the options are now missing, alongside the Dolby Atmos for headphones setting in Resident Evil 3 specifically.
No one knows why raytracing options have been removed from both games, and Capcom hasn’t provided a comment on the matter. It could be that some kind of bug has arisen, but it’s not exactly common to remove a feature that many PC gamers opt for so unceremoniously like that. Players have been speculating the reasoning behind the removal, some believing that it could just be a mistake, others noting that the console versions still have their raytracing options. We’ll just have to wait and see if Capcom says anything on the matter, or if it just as quietly adds them back in.

Meta shares AI model that can detect objects it hasn’t seen before
AI normally needs to be trained on existing material to detect objects, but Meta has a way for the technology to spot items without help. The social media giant has published a “Segment Anything” AI model that can detect objects in pictures and videos even if they weren’t part of the training set. You can select items by clicking them or using free-form text prompts. As Reutersexplains, you can type the word “cat” and watch the AI highlight all the felines in a given photo.
The model can also work in tandem with other models. It can help reconstruct an object in 3D using a single image, or draw from views from a mixed reality headset. Effectively, Segment Anything can limit the need for additional AI training.
Both the AI model and a dataset will be downloadable with a non-commercial license. That is, creators can’t use it for products. This is primarily for research and expanding access to the technology. Right now, Meta uses somewhat similar tech to moderate banned content, recommend posts and tag photos.
The developers acknowledge that the existing model is flawed. It might miss finer details, and isn’t as accurate at detecting the boundaries as some models. And while Segment Anything can handle prompts in real-time, it bogs down when demanding image processing is involved. Some more specialized AI tools are likely to outperform this model in their respective fields, Meta says.
You aren’t about to see this AI in robots or other devices where fast, accurate object detection is (usually) vital. However, models like this may still help in situations where it’s impractical to rely exclusively on training data. A social network could use the tech to keep up with a rapidly growing volume of content. If nothing else, this shows that Meta wants to generalize computer vision.
Meta is no stranger to sharing AI breakthroughs, such a translator for unwritten languages. With that said, there’s pressure on the company to show that it’s as much of a powerhouse in the category as tech heavyweights like Google and Microsoft. It’s already planning generative AI “personas” for its social apps, and inventions like Segment Anything show that it has a few advantages of its own.
