Todd Howard Talks Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield, Sale To Xbox, And Meaning Of Life
As part of a wide-ranging interview with Lex Fridman, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has discussed a number of hot-button topics, including Bethesda’s sale to Microsoft, The Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield, the Indiana Jones game, and a lot more. In addition to talking about video games, Howard gets into more personal things like what a day in the life is like for him, his advice to younger people, and the meaning of life.
If you don’t have the time or interest to listen to the full interview, it’s handily time-stamped so you can hear what Howard has to say about a range of topics. For Starfield, Howard said he hopes the game might inspire some young people to pursue opportunities in the field of space and space exploration or being an engineer. He also dished on some of the ins and outs of Bethesda’s vision for the game at a high level.
For The Elder Scrolls 6, Howard said part of the challenge of developing it as a game that could be playable and engaging for the next decade or more. 2011’s Skyrim remains one of Bethesda’s most-played games, Howard said, and he expects people to play The Elder Scrolls 6 for the next decade or two. For the Indiana Jones game, which is in development at Machine Games, Howard said the game will be a mash-up of genres that can’t be pinned down.
Todd Howard says Starfield will let you get into “more complex relationships”
Romance has never been Bethesda’s strong suit, from Skyrim‘s barebones marriage system to Fallout 4‘s bonus-XP-granting fade-to-black cutscenes. Starfield will be a little more nuanced than that, suggests executive producer Todd Howard, offering more complex romance options than Fallout’s.
That’s just one detail from a nearly 3 hour-long interview Howard gave on the Lex Fridman podcast, where he also talks scrapping space strandings, and (gasp) why he prefers to play on consoles to PC.
Todd Howard says you’ll never run out of fuel in Starfield because it’s a ‘fun killer’
Shocking no one, Todd Howard knows something about The Elder Scrolls 6 release date
What do we know about The Elder Scrolls 6 So far? Well, according to Microsoft, it’s ‘a mid-size game‘. It will definitely release after Starfield. Bethesda director Todd Howard said – fairly recently – that the massive RPG is still in its design phase, which is the earliest stage of development proper.
So it’s a way off yet. I think we can all agree on that. Whilst most of the internet – and, assumedly, all the staff at Sony – ponder the release date of Microsoft’s hidden weapon, there’s one man out there that does know when it’s going to hit the virtual shelves. And that man is the aforementioned Todd Howard.
“I have a vague idea [about the Elder Scrolls 6 release date],” says Howard in an interview with Youtuber Lex Fridman (embedded below). “I wish it was soon. We want [the game] out too. And I wish they didn’t take as long as they did, but they do. If I could go back in time, it would never have been my plan to take as long as it’s taken.”
Wish The Elder Scrolls 6 was out now? So does Todd Howard
The Elder Scrolls 6 release date remains one of the biggest and most anticipated mysteries for fans of RPG games, but as Skyrim, Fallout, and Starfield developer Bethesda keeps its proverbial cards close to its chest, studio director Todd Howard admits he wishes the next Elder Scrolls would come out soon.

Starfield absent as Bethesda crowns Todd Howard at Elder Scrolls event
Starfield, the upcoming space RPG game from Bethesda, is notably absent from an event where the Elder Scrolls, Skyrim, Daggerfall, and Fallout developer honours long-standing employees, including Todd Howard, for their contributions over the years – and so there’s still no firm confirmation of the Starfield release date.
