Bring back incredible video game peripherals, you cowards
A few days ago, I had a quiet revelation. Or perhaps revelation is a bit strong. You’re familiar with the feeling, I’m sure – I felt something I already knew in the very core of my being crystallize into a much more readily articulable opinion. That is: I miss dedicated gaming hardware.
Now, obviously, we still have ‘dedicated gaming hardware’ of a certain type. We have consoles, specialist PCs, retro throwbacks, and so on. But I’m really talking about something a little different; where we had highly game-specific add-ons, extras, or even entire machines designed to deliver a distinct experience for a particular game.
I’m talking about stuff like light guns and dance mats. I’m talking about arcade machines that deployed mega-specific hardware, from Street Fighter’s infamously shit and quickly-dropped hand-ruining pressure-sensitive buttons, to the Game Boy Camera. I’m talking about Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I’m talking about those stupid GameCube bongos.

Watch incredible moment Chelsea star Wesley Fofana completely takes out steward in Leeds clash
WESLEY FOFANA netted the winner as Chelsea ended a six game winless run against Leeds.
And an eventful afternoon for the defender also saw him accidentally wipe out a steward at the side of the Stamford Bridge pitch.
The incident came with ten minutes left of the match, which Chelsea won 1-0.
Fofana, 22, found himself in a footrace to the ball with Leeds ace Wilfried Gnonto.
It was the Chelsea man who got there first, and a slight nudge from Gnonto sent him tumbling to the turf.
Fofana then slid along the surface and accidentally took out a steward who was standing at the side of the pitch.
The £70million summer signing hit the steward in the legs, causing them to lose their footing and crash to the ground.
Fofana had earlier headed the Blues in front from a Ben Chilwell corner.
And that was how it finished, as Graham Potter’s side held on to claim a valuable three points against relegation threatened Leeds.
Fofana’s goal was just the seventh time Chelsea have found the back of the net since November 6.

Inside billionaire Red McCombs’ incredible career before his death from getting Spurs into NBA to owning 400 businesses
LEGENDARY Texas businessman Red McCombs has died at the age of 95.
Formerly the owner of the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Vikings, McCombs’s passing was announced on Monday.
His family said in a statement: “Red was a visionary entrepreneur who touched many lives and impacted our community in immeasurable ways.
“But to us he was always, first and foremost, ‘Dad’ or ‘Poppop.’
“We mourn the loss of a Texas icon.”
McCombs’ wife, Charline, sadly passed away in 2019.
The couple had three children, Lynda McCombs, Marsha Shields, and Connie McNab, eight grandchildren, and 11 grandchildren.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver later responded to the news of McComb’s passing, calling him “an innovator and savvy entrepreneur,” per KSAT.
He said: “Red McCombs brought the Spurs to San Antonio and was a driving force in creating the modern NBA.
“He was an innovator and savvy entrepreneur who never shied away from taking risks.
“We mourn Red’s passing and send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and the Spurs organization.”
According to McCombs Enterprises, McCombs had over 400 businesses during his lifetime.
These included numerous automotive dealerships under the Red McCombs Automotive brand, an oil and gas company called McCombs Energy, and Clear Channel Communications – now known as iHeartCommunications, Inc.
But for many, he will forever be remembered for his impact on the sporting world.
After purchasing the ABA’s Dallas Chaparrals, he moved them to San Antonio for the 1973-74 season, per ESPN.
Speaking to the Houston Chronicle, Spurs legend and NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin said McCombs’ “impact” on the city of San Antonio was “unbelievable.”
“We always say, ‘Everything Red touches turns to gold.’ It’s a reality. His vision for this city, his vision for the Spurs.
“We named them (the Spurs) after the city (Spur, Texas) he grew up in. So that tells you a lot about his influence on the Spurs.”
Described by ESPN as “instrumental in getting the Spurs into the NBA as part of the ABA-NBA merger in 1976,” McCombs later sold his stake in the team in 1982.
A three-year stint as the owner of the Denver Nuggets followed before he repurchased his stake in the Spurs in 1986.
Two years later, he purchased the remainder of the Spurs.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich also paid tribute to his “good friend and mentor,” saying: “Red was a true icon. A Texas legend.
“It’s impossible to overstate the impact he had on the City of San Antonio. Perhaps, his most impressive trait was his commitment to community.
“Red and Charline impacted tens of thousands of lives, here in San Antonio and across Texas.
“From multimillion dollar donations to flying a stranded Little League team back to San Antonio, the McCombs family has always put community first.
“To me, most of all, he was a good friend and mentor.”
Fast-forward to 1993 and he departed San Antonio once more, moving into NFL ownership in 1998.
Seven years on, he flipped his $246million purchase for $600million.
Described by the Vikings in a statement as a man who “embodied his famous ‘Purple Pride’ phrase,” McCombs was also a supporter of the University of Texas Longhorns.
Mack Brown, who coached UT from 1998-2013, tweeted: “Saddened to hear that Red McCombs has passed away. He was a giant of a man and a dear friend.
“My life is so much better for having known him and he will definitely be missed. Sending our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”
A multi-million dollar donor to UT, per KXAN, their School of Business, softball field, and a section of the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium’s north end-zone all bear his name.
And his name will also live on in the racing world.
An investor in Austin’s Circuit of the Americas – home of the U.S. Grand Prix – the first corner was previously named in his honor.
Racing legend Mario Andretti tweeted: “Race fans will be forever grateful for Red McCombs, the visionary investor who helped fund the internationally famous race track Circuit of the Americas.
“A wonderful friend to motorsports and certainly a friend of mine. RIP Red.”
According to Forbes, McCombs had a staggering net worth of $1.7billion at the time of his passing.
You could own an incredible £450,000 house for just FIVE POUNDS – but you need to get in quick
A HOUSE worth £450,000 could be yours for just five pounds – but you need to get your skates on.
Daniel Twenefour, 32, alongside brothers, Jason, 38, and Will, 36, are offering one lucky winner the chance to live rent and mortgage-free in any property in London worth up to £450,000.
A lucky winner could be living in a London home like this one[/caption]
The lucky person gets to choose any property for sale in London up to £450,000[/caption]
Previously, they’ve shaken up the property market with a unique venture – offering people the chance to win houses for as little as £2.
The idea came to Daniel when he struggled to sell his £415,000 home in Mitcham in 2010, where he launched a competition to raffle off the house instead.
Since then, the genius scheme, called Tram Way Path, which previously featured on Channel 4’s My £2 Dream Home, has continued.
Now, they’ve given away nine homes in total, with their latest venture offering an even more unique touch, with any property in London on the market for up to £450,000 available.
Daniel said: “The reason why we’re doing this new concept is that we’ve previously always decided upon where people live, but now we’re putting them in the driver’s seat.
“We’ve found that people have attachments to certain areas, such as if their family is there, work or their kids’ schools.
“I don’t want to take that away from anyone, so we’ve given them the flexibility to decide where they want to live.”
Any property within the capital city is up for grabs, whether it’s an apartment, home or cottage – up to £450,000.
And that’s not all – the lucky winner will live completely mortgage-free, with no worries about rising interest rates.
There’s also no stamp duty or legal fees, and the three brothers believe this life-changing prize will help struggling families or millennials.
Daniel said: “For me, I’ve noticed that the bulk of people who enter are millennials, which clearly indicates that there’s a problem within the property market for them.
“I’d love to help them out and get them on the ladder, but the competition is open to anyone – no restrictions or bias.
“Property is a necessity, not a luxury, and we believe everyone should have a roof over their heads.”
To flog the home, the Twenefours will need to sell at least 110,000 tickets, including transfer costs such as stamp duty and legal fees.
But if the target isn’t reached, the winner will still receive 70 per cent of the ticket receipts to buy their dream home of choice.
Daniel added: “It’s been a blessing to change so many lives.”
To enter the competition, visit Tram Way Path’s website, with tickets starting as low as £5 for three entries.
The draw will close on March 31, 2023 at 11.59pm, with the winner announced on April 1 at 7pm via telephone and email in the presence of a solicitor.
