The next EA Original is a fantasy hunting game set in feudal Japan from Koei Tecmo
The next EA Original has been announced, and it’s coming from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, developers of the Dynasty Warriors series. Set in Japan during its feudal period but with a fantasy twist, EA and Koei Tecmo describe the as-yet-untitled project as “the next great hunting game”. Dispel those mental images of theHunter: Call Of The Wild and Big Buck Hunter though, because it sounds like this is more in the vein of hack-and-slash monster hunting shenanigans.
Splatoon 3 is the fastest selling game launch in Japan ever
Splatoon 3 is doing incredibly well in Japan, so well in fact it is now the fastest selling game in the country.
Earlier today (September 12), Nintendo Japan shared that Splatoon 3 has sold more than 3.45 million copies in its first three days of sale, made up of both physical and digital copies. To put things into perspective, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of Nintendo’s best selling games, sold 1.88 million copies in the same time frame. Meaning Splatoon 3 has sold almost double that of New Horizons.
But as industry analyst Daniel Ahmad points out, it isn’t just the best launch for a Switch game in Japan, it’s the best launch for any game in Japan. The previous record holder was Pokémon Black and White, which sold more than 2.6 million copies in its first two days on sale, and only selling a touch more than that in its first week. Which still puts Splatoon 3 ahead just by just under a million.
Assassin’s Creed’s future goes to Japan and parts unknown
Codename Red will take the Assassin’s Creed franchise to feudal Japan
The game Assassin’s Creed fans have been asking for years is finally on its way. During its Ubisoft Forward event on Saturday, the publisher revealed Codename Red, a new entry in the series that will be set in feudal Japan. Franchise head Marc-Alexis Côté called Red the “next premium title” in Ubisoft’s open world series and said Ubisoft Quebec was leading work on the project, suggesting it will hew closer to Odyssey than next year’s Mirage.

Côté also shared a teaser for Codename Hexe and called it “a very different type of Assassin’s Creed game.” Ubisoft Montreal, the studio that first created the series is leading development on the project, with Clint Hocking involved as creative director. Hocking may not be a household name, but he’s probably among the most influential designers at Ubisoft, with credits that include Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Far Cry 2. According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Jason Scheier, the game is set during the latter stages of the Holy Roman Empire.
Neither game has a release date yet, but Ubisoft said they would both integrate with Infinity, a service Côté called “not a game per se, but a single entry point into the series.” Ubisoft was cryptic about what Infinity would involve but Côté said the company was exploring the possibility of creating standalone multiplayer experiences within the hub.

Ubisoft Forward: Multiple New Assassin’s Creed Games Announced, Taking the Franchise to Baghdad, Feudal Japan, and More
Assassin’s Creed is finally going to Japan
Ubisoft announces new Assassin’s Creed games set in Baghdad, Japan, and more
After a string of leaks, Ubisoft has officially unveiled the next major Assassin’s Creed game. As expected, it’s called Mirage and will shift the time-traveling series to 9th-century Baghdad, where players will take on the role of a budding assassin named Basim. (Fans might remember that name from an appearance in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla; Mirage takes place two decades before that game.)
Notably, Ubisoft says that the game will get back to the action-adventure roots of the series, which means that the RPG mechanics from more recent games will not be present. Mirage is expected to launch sometime in 2023. Also of note: in an inspired bit of casting, Shohreh Aghdashloo will be voicing the role of Basim’s assassination mentor.
But that’s…
Assassin’s Creed Roadmap Features 4 New Games, Including One Set In Feudal Japan
During the Future of Assassin’s Creed portion of the September 2022 Ubisoft Forward, four brand new Assassin’s Creed games were revealed. Ubisoft is working on two mobile games and two console/PC games for its Assassin’s Creed franchise.
Project Jade seems to be the game that’s furthest along, given that it had a trailer that featured actual in-game assets. Set in China, Project Jade is going to release for mobile devices.
Unfortunately, it won’t see the return of fan-favorite Shao Jun, an Assassin who operated during the Ming dynasty and is the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China. Instead, the game will feature a new protagonist that fans will be able to fully customize.
