Defence Minister Ben Wallace said UK-supplied missiles could be used within Ukrainian territory[/caption]
“Storm Shadow air-to-air missiles supplied to the Kyiv regime by Britain were used for the strike, contrary to London’s statements that these weapons would not be used against civilian targets,” the Russian ministry said.
It also claimed to have downed the Su-24 and MiG-29 which fired them.
On Thursday Britain became the first country to declare it had started supplying Kyiv with long-range missiles.
Defence Minister Ben Wallace said they could be used within Ukrainian territory, implying he had assurances from President Volodymyr Zelensky they would not be fired at targets in Russia.
They will let Ukraine target troops and supply dumps far behind the front lines in preparation for a counter-offensive.
Russia’s defence ministry also claimed it had gained control of a block in the eastern city of Bakhmut following ten months of fighting.
“The units of the Airborne Forces provided support to the assault units and pinned down the enemy on the flanks,” it said.

Putin’s allies call for London to be ‘turned to dust’ after Ukraine said it would use Brit missiles to blitz Crimea
KREMLIN propagandists have called for London to be “turned to dust” after Ukraine said it would use Brit missiles.
The deranged ranting was part of a nightly show dedicated to pro-war discussion on state TV that’s hosted by a notorious Putin acolyte.
Tonight’s show featured discussion of a report in The Sun saying Kyiv said it would use the Storm Shadow missile if the UK was willing to provide it.
At one point host Vladimir Solovyov point bizarrely raised his hand as if to cast a spell, then stared manically at the screen and said: “London will turn to dust! To dust.”
Mad Vlad’s mouthpiece, his face twisted with rage, then switches to English and begins shouting: “Burn in hell!” and “Flames!”.
Solovyov was responding to one of the panellists who moaned: “The British press is saying ‘We’ll give them hell! I’m quoting verbatim frim their most popular paper The Sun.
“They all regard this as completely fine – ‘Russians can and need to be killed’. They’re saying that constantly.
“There’s one problem with Russians. They won’t give up as easily as that.”
The clip and its translation was tweeted by BBC Monitoring, which regularly posts on pro-Kremlin propaganda shows.
Volodymyr Zelensky asked for the 600mph missiles when he visited the UK recently with a shopping list of weapons.
Ukrainian defence sources Kyiv would be prepared to use the missiles to strike Crimea
It followed a warning from Zelensky that longer-range weapons from western allies would allow Ukraine to take the battle to areas occupied by Russian.
“It will allow us to make the evil completely retreat from our country by destroying its airbases deep in the occupied territories,” he said during his visit.
In response, Rishi Sunak said “nothing is off the table” when it comes to military support for Ukraine.
The government is still is still weighing up whether to send deadly Harpoon anti-ship missiles or surface-to-air Storm Shadows to arm Ukrainian defenders.
After Germany finally agree to send tanks, Solovyov, and other Kremlin propagandists threatened nuclear strikes on the West.
In a similar rant he claimed it meant Germany had joined the war.
“It’s time to send a clear, resolute message that we now consider Germany a direct party to the conflict, rekindling memories of World War Two.
“German tanks appearing [in Ukraine] will definitely mean we consider German territory, military bases and other sites as legitimate targets.”
Raging Moscow TV pundit Yevgeny Satanovsky said warheads should be launched on the German capital Berlin and the country’s parliament, the Bundestag.
“Flat, slightly radioactive, melted-down ground [will remain in its place].”
Ukrainian defenders are bracing for an assault that could include 1,800 tanks, 3,950 armoured vehicles, 400 fighter jets and 300 helicopters incoming from Russia.
However, NATO’s Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, has said that Russia has already launched its new offensive and was “sending more troops, more weapons, more capabilities”.
Ukraine has been monitoring the military build-up as they continue to plea for Western support.

The PM promised to ship more machinery to Ukraine following the Ukrainian leader’s visit to the UK.
Authorities are now debating whether to send deadly Harpoon anti-ship missiles or surface-to-air Storm Shadows to arm Ukrainian defenders.
Kyiv would be prepared to use such missiles to blast Crimea, a Ukrainian defence source told The Times.
Russia annexed Crimea back in 2014 and Ukraine has repeatedly vowed to reclaim the territory.
During his impassioned speech to Parliament on Wednesday, Zelensky insisted he wanted to strike “deep in the occupied territories”.
Storm Shadow air-launched missiles can travel at up to 600mph and can blast targets up to 350 miles away.
They are designed to hit well-defended static targets like facilities, bunkers and bridges.
The UK’s Harpoon cruise missiles, meanwhile, have a maximum range of 150 miles – six times further than the most powerful GMLRS rockets supplied by Britain so far.
It comes after Putin vowed a “response” with “military-political consequences” if the UK supplies Ukraine with fighter jets.
Mr Sunak said “nothing is off the table” after the Ukrainian PM invoked the spirit of Winston Churchill in his address.
A furious Russia hit back with a chilling warning, in a statement issued through its UK embassy.
The “military-political consequences” of arming Ukraine “will be on the United Kingdom’s hands”, the Kremlin said.
“Russia will know how to respond to any unfriendly actions by the British side.”
Russia also took a swipe at Zelensky, calling him “pompous” and “hypocritical”.
The Ukrainian leader’s plea for weapons comes amid mounting concern a renewed Russian offensive is underway.
Ukraine has warned Russia has hundreds of thousands of soldiers, thousands of tanks, and hundreds of warplanes preparing for a new assault.
Putin is believed to be preparing for a massive blitz in the coming weeks to coincide with the first anniversary of the war on February 24.
Ukraine has been monitoring the military build-up as they continue to plea for Western support – including during Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to London.
Zelensky hailed the UK for its support – but warned it may not be enough, and called for modern fighter planes.
The new assault is feared to be “much bigger” than the first wave which stormed across the country towards Kyiv almost exactly one year ago.
Russia is believed to be massing 1,800 tanks, 3,950 armoured vehicles, 400 fighter jets and 300 helicopters for the attack, according to a Ukrainian official.
They added Putin is also gathering 2,700 artillery guns and 810 rocket launchers for a “new wave of attacks”, reports Foreign Policy.
“It’s much bigger than what took place in the first wave,” the official said.
“They are not paying attention to any casualties or losses. In the next 10 days, we expect a new, huge invasion.”
Ukrainian intelligence has put the figure for the spring offensive at between 300,000 and 500,000 soldiers.

Britain has yet to rule out giving Ukraine long-range Harpoon cruise missiles to target Russian launch sites
BRITAIN has yet to rule out giving Ukraine Harpoon cruise missiles — which can hit targets deeper inside Russia.
Hundreds of the weapons, due to be retired by the Royal Navy this year, are up for grabs.
The UK’s Harpoon cruise missiles have a maximum range of 240km – six times further than the most powerful GMLRS rockets supplied by Britain so far.
They could target launch sites Russia uses to hit Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Defence Minister Baroness Goldie said: “The UK has not ruled out the possibility of providing longer range weapons to counter Russia’s indiscriminate mass targeting of civilian infrastructure.”
She insisted UK weapons were used “in accordance with international humanitarian law”.
Baroness Goldie added: “We liaise on a daily basis with the Ukrainian Government, and they are clear that equipment provided by the UK is intended for the defence of Ukraine.”
The UK has led the way with a promise of 14 Challenger 2 tanks on top of thousands of anti-tank, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles.
A defence source said could donate Harpoons or buy in missiles from third countries.
Ex-PM Boris Johnson last night said the West should provide longer-range aircraft.
