Fantasy RPG Mirthwood mixes Fable-style socialising with Stardew’s farmlifery
My ever-growing backlog of farmlife sims gives me a judgemental side-eye every week, as I crawl back to my scarily silent husband in Stardew Valley. That list of Stardew-likes is becoming harder and harder to ignore, though. I’m very much looking forward to Grave Seasons (aka Stardew meets murder mysteries). I was looking forward to Roots Of Pacha (aka Stardew meets the Stone Age) before its publisher woes. And now, I’m incredibly excited about Mirthwood (aka Stardew meets Fable). Check out its announcement trailer below:

Apex Legends season 17 mixes up World’s Edge’s Fragment, adds new POIs
The Apex Legends season 17: Arsenal update is changing up World’s Edge with a number of map adjustments, including two new POIs, fresh lighting, and a bit of chasm removal. Much of the lava will now be traversable on foot as the region cools down and becomes less volatile. Beyond that, a few fan-favourite spots in the FPS game have been either shifted or replaced to give World’s Edge a fresh feeling for the first time since season 10.

Luna Abyss is a brutalist bullet hell that mixes Bioshock with Nier Automata
Sometimes you see a game, and it grabs you immediately. There’s a lot to be said about the importance of that first audio visual impression a game can have, how a slick art style paired with a booming voice or sweeping soundtrack can steal your heart. Roughly two weeks ago, on the GDC expo floor, Luna Abyss may of well been just that.
To learn more about the game, I sat down and talked to creative director Benni Hill (don’t hum the tune) about the upcoming first-person bullet-hell shooter from Bonsai Collection. Where does that art style come from, and how exactly do you transfer a traditionally 2D genre effectively into a 3D game?
The game is a striking clash of dark concrete and metal, peppered with pipes, stairs, and mechanical horror. You as a convict with mysterious crimson eyes have been sent to the Red Moon, a strange orbital boy that appeared over earth 250 years ago. While there, you must serve a prison sentence, ordered by the loud everpresent voice of your mechanical warden to discover relics hidden in the megastructure.
Spotify’s Niche Mixes let you generate personalized playlists for almost anything
Spotify already offers a host of personalized playlists, and now the company is giving users even more control over the generation of those mixes. Building on the mood, decades and genre playlists the platform debuted in 2021, Spotify today introduced Niche Mixes, a feature the company says combines all of its personalized playlists “in a playful way.”
In short, you can now prompt Spotify to create an algorithmically generated mix for almost any mood or genre. To do so, navigate over to Spotify’s search bar and type the activity you want the app to soundtrack for you and add “mix” to the end. You can get pretty creative. I asked Spotify to create a witch house playlist for me, followed by one featuring relaxing videogame soundtracks. In both cases, Spotify obliged and did a pretty good job of selecting appropriate tracks. That said, you’ll sometimes run into situations where Spotify won’t produce an exact match for the mix you want. For example, I asked it to create a “dubstep work mix,” only to get a workout playlist instead.
As with the company’s other personalized mixes, you can expect each playlist to feature a mixture of familiar songs alongside tracks ones you may not have heard before. Niche mixes are available to today to free and Premium users who search in English.

Spotify is coming for your perfectly curated playlists with Niche Mixes
Finally, there is a custom “Meme Mix” on Spotify.
Today (March 28), the streaming giant launched “Niche Mixes,” its latest attempt to recommend more music to users. Every day Spotify will now serve you five to 10 playlists organized by wacky themes like “Angry Whistling” and “Egg Punk.” What does “Egg Punk” mean? I have no idea.
To access these Niche Mixes, click on “Search,” tap “Made for you,” and scroll down to “Your Niche Mixes.” My Niche Mixes include “Aggressive Heavy,” which features a combination of artists I’ve never listened to (Slayer, Slipknot, and Poppy), and “Dark Moody,” which appears to be more in line with my typical listening habits.
Niche Mixes come after Spotify unveiled a new video-forward home screen that features snippets of songs, audiobooks, and podcasts and an AI DJ that also distributes algorithmically generated recommendations to users. It’s part of Spotify’s effort to double-down on being the go-to destination to discover new content.
You can also search for custom Niche Mixes based on the “activity, vibe, or aesthetic that describes the moment you’re in” by adding mix to a search term. Some Niche Mixes that came up from various searches include “Goblincore Mix,” “Murder Ballad,” and “Extreme Pirate.”
However, the new mixes detract from some of the fun of the platform. I would hate to see users relying on Spotify’s Niche Mixes instead of creating their own hyper-specific playlists. Previously, you might search a particular mood and be greeted by dozens user-generated playlists. User-generated playlists are at the center of modern music consumption and sharing. As a fellow user, they remind me that every silly little feeling I have someone else has had, too — and they’ve already chosen the perfect Taylor Swift song for it.
Personally, I would rather my abstract Spotify searches yield a playlist created by a 16-year-old girl than an algorithm.
