Elon Musk has found his replacement as CEO of Twitter
Elon Musk has announced plans for a new Twitter CEO but hasn’t said who it is. In a tweet on Thursday, Musk says that he has “hired a new CEO for X/Twitter” and that “she will be starting in ~6 weeks.” Musk will instead assume the role of executive chair and chief technology officer, “overseeing product, software & sysops” of Twitter.
According to Dylan Byers of Puck News, the new CEO will be NBC Universal advertising executive Linda Yaccarino, citing two unnamed sources.

Elon Musk claims Twitter has hired a new CEO but doesn’t reveal who she is
Good news, Tesla investors!
In a tweet today, Elon Musk shared that Twitter – well, its new parent company X Corp. that is – has hired a new CEO who will start within 6 weeks.
“Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter,” Musk tweeted on Thursday. “She will be starting in ~6 weeks!”
Now, remember, this is Elon Musk. Six weeks could come and go and he could very well still be Twitter’s CEO. But, let’s go with the scenario that he has indeed hired a new CEO and take his announcement from there.
Musk did not reveal who the CEO is. However, based on the pronoun that Musk used in his tweet, it does appear that Twitter’s owner has hired a woman for the role.
Who that could be is anyone’s guess! Maybe he poached crypto evangelist Cathie Wood from her CEO role at the investment firm Ark Invest. Musk recently called her “awesome” on Twitter. Or perhaps he hired Islamophobic conspiracy theorist and far right wing activist, Laura Loomer, whom he recently interacted with on Twitter. Heck, it could even be his musician ex-girlfriend Grimes!
What does matter, at least to Tesla investors, is that he’s found someone. Musk’s EV car manufacturer hasn’t been doing too well on the stock market ever since Tesla CEO Musk also became Twitter CEO Musk. Some Tesla investors argued Musk was derelict in his role at the car company.
Tesla stock was trading at around $228 when Musk officially acquired Twitter. It fell as low as $101 earlier this year. It’s hovered around the $160 range over the past few weeks. When Musk tweeted out the news on Twitter, the price quickly spiked to more than $172.
Musk’s announcement comes almost five months after his Twitter poll asking the platform’s users if he should step down as CEO of the company. More than 17.5 million users voted in and 57.5 percent said he should step down. Musk tried to deflect on commenting on the poll over the past few months, even going so far as claiming he did abide by the results by appointing his dog Floki as CEO.
As for Musk’s future with Twitter, he claims he’s staying on as Executive Chair and CTO, the latter of which he mentioned doing back in December right after his Twitter poll ended.
“My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops,” he said in his tweet today.
But let’s be honest here. It’s still Musk’s Twitter. Not only is he staying on, he’s also its owner! And Twitter is now a private company controlled by Musk. So, he’ll still be calling the shots regardless of who the new CEO is.

Elon Musk says he has found a new CEO for Twitter. Musk did not specify who will be taking on the role, though The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that NBCUniversal Head of Advertising Linda Yaccarino is “in talks” for the position. Elon Musk says a new Twitter CEO is starting in six weeks
Elon Musk is making good on his promise to step down as Twitter CEO following a poll. The entrepreneur has announced that a replacement chief executive will start at Twitter in roughly six weeks. While he hasn’t identified the new leader by name, he indicated he had hired a woman for the role. Musk will stay on as executive chairman and chief technical officer covering “product, software and sysops.”
Hours after Musk’s announcement, The Wall Street Journal reported that NBCUniversal advertising exec Linda Yaccarino “is in talks” to take over the CEO role at Twitter. Yaccarino is known for being an “industry advocate for finding better ways to measure the effectiveness of advertising,” according to The Journal. Twitter didn’t respond to a request for comment, but Yaccarino and Musk are apparently on good terms.
The two have appeared together at ad industry events, and Yaccarino has spoken favorably of Musk. NBCU also has significant partnerships with Twitter, recently renewing its partnership to host video from the 2024 Olympics on Twitter. And, as AdAge recently pointed out, Yaccarino tweeted at Musk that Twitter should bring back Periscope, calling it “an idea for our new partnership.”
Excited to announce that I’ve a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks!

Musk said in December that he would honor the results of a poll asking whether or not he should bow out. He didn’t give a timeline, but did say he would leave as soon as he found someone “foolish enough to take the job.” He also said he would relegate himself to running software and server teams. He has also abided by the outcomes of other polls for major decisions.
His tenure has been chaotic since it began in October. He made a point of firing the executive team and dissolving the board of directors. Most rank-and-file employees from before the purchase have either been laid off or quit. Twitter’s looser content moderation policies under Musk, which have focused on limiting reach rather than bans, have earned praise from some circles but have also prompted an exodus of advertisers that don’t want to risk running ads next to hate speech and misinformation. The social network has tried to shift more of its revenue toward subscriptions, but may have had only limited success.
It’s not clear how much practical control Musk will have following the leadership shuffle. While he’ll no longer be CEO, he’ll still have significant influence over Twitter’s technology. And given that Musk played a role in finding a replacement, the new hire might not be quick to change strategy. Don’t be shocked if Twitter maintains the Musk-era status quo, at least for a while.
This could assuage the fears of some Tesla investors. They’ve worried that Musk has been distracted from work at his best-known company by focusing on Twitter. With his reduced role, he’ll theoretically have more time to devote to his EV brand as it faces mounting competition.
Update 5/11 4:58 PM PT: This story has been updated to reflect reports that NBCU exec Linda Yaccarino is in the running for the CEO role.
