Microsoft reportedly orders AI chatbot rivals to stop using Bing’s search data
Microsoft doesn’t want its rivals to use Bing’s search index to power their AI chatbots, according to a report from Bloomberg. The company reportedly told two unnamed Bing-powered search engines that it will restrict them from accessing Microsoft’s search data altogether if they continue using it with their AI tools.
As noted by Bloomberg, Microsoft licenses out Bing’s search data to several search engines, including DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and the AI search engine You.com. While DuckDuckGo, for example, uses a combination of Bing and its own web crawler to provide search results, You.com and Neeva also pull some of their results from Bing, helping to conserve some of the time and resources that come along with crawling the entire web.

Apple’s Rumored 5G Modem for iPhones Has Suppliers Competing for Orders
While the custom-designed modem will likely be manufactured by Apple’s chipmaking partner TSMC, the final packaging stage may be handled by other suppliers. Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes today reported that ASE Technology and Amkor Technology are “competing” to package the modem chips. The two companies already have experience packaging Qualcomm’s modem chips, the report states.
Qualcomm is currently the exclusive supplier of 5G modems for Apple devices, including the entire iPhone 14 lineup, but Apple has long been rumored to be designing its own 5G chip as an in-house replacement. Last month, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said he expected Apple’s 5G modem to be ready in 2024, but Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that it could take up to three years for Apple to fully transition away from Qualcomm.
The first device expected to be equipped with Apple’s custom 5G modem is the fourth-generation iPhone SE, which will likely be released around March 2024. It’s unclear how Apple’s chip would perform compared to Qualcomm’s modems, but the switch to an in-house design would likely reduce Apple’s production costs over time.
In the meantime, all iPhone 15 models are expected to be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X70 modem, which has further cellular speed and power efficiency improvements compared to the Snapdragon X65 in all iPhone 14 models.

Apple’s Huge 3nm Chip Orders for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs Helping to Maintain TSMC’s Fab Utilization Rates
DigiTimes reports that TSMC’s 5nm fabrication capacity began to loosen in November 2022 as a result of reduced orders from Apple, amongst other partners, with orders for iPhone chips alone having been slashed by 30%. However, the Taiwanese manufacturer has apparently been able to keep its utilization rate at 70% or higher thanks to Apple’s thirst for 3nm:
TSMC continues to improve its capacity utilization for 3nm process technology, which is expected to approach 50% at the end of March, the sources said. The foundry will also grow the process output to 50,000-55,000 wafers monthly in March, with Apple being the main customer.
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to feature the A17 Bionic processor, Apple’s first iPhone chip based on TSMC’s first-generation 3nm process, also known as N3E.
The first-gen 3nm process is said to deliver a 35% power efficiency improvement over TSMC’s 5nm-based N4 fabrication process, which was used to make the A16 Bionic chip for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The N3 technology will also offer significantly improved performance compared to current chips manufactured on 5nm.
Apple’s next-generation 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models are both expected to be equipped with an M3 chip, which is also likely to be manufactured on the 3nm process for further performance and power efficiency improvements. Apple is also reportedly planning to release an updated version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M3 chip. The M2 chip and its higher-end Pro and Max variants are built on TSMC’s second-generation 5nm process.
Orders for new AI processors from Nvidia and AMD, as well as Apple’s new iPhone chip, are expected to help TSMC avoid further fab utilization declines in the second quarter, DigiTimes‘ sources said.

AI’s Latest Problem? Screwing Up Orders at McDonalds
All seemed fine until, at a second drive-thru lane, another car pulled up. Adams’ AI helper seems to have overheard that order and added it to Adams’. Adams tried to make the robot see sense. Or, rather hear it. Instead, the robot removed the errant Diet Coke and replaced it with, oh, nine sweet teas instead of one.
Which suggests something of a problem. When your robot drive-thru employee makes a mistake, to whom can you complain? Complaining to the robot seems to create an extra layer of complication and the potential for even greater misunderstanding.
Adams, indeed, isn’t alone. Here’s Caitlyn Sykora (not) ordering $254 of McNuggets meals. And here’s Madilynn Cameron wanting a large cup of water and a cup of ice cream and discovering butter is included. She seems to have given up.
The customer who’d ordered one sweet tea and instead got nine also drove off in a huff, according to the end of their TikTok video.
Matyszczyk’s conclusion? ” if you’re not so good at fixing ice-cream machines, how good will you be at maintaining thousands of robot order-takers?”

Apple Orders OLED Panels for 2024 iPad Models From Samsung and LG Display
Business Korea reports that Apple placed orders for the development of 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch OLED panels from the two display companies, while rival Chinese display maker BOE lost out.
Apple reportedly placed orders for the development of 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch panels for the iPad with Samsung Display and LG Display. BOE was excluded.
Korean display makers are planning to produce OLED panels for the iPad at their current sixth-generation (1500mm x 1850mm) line.
According to a separate report from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, Apple has not yet finalized the order volume of OLED displays for iPad Pro, but it may divide the order equally between the two Korean factories mentioned above.
Apple is developing 11.1-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pro models that will come out in the first quarter of 2024, according to display analyst Ross Young, who has a good track record for Apple rumors.
It’s not entirely clear why the display dimensions are different in the two latest Korean reports, which appear to be citing the same industry sources. Previous reports have indicated Apple plans larger 11.1-inch and 13-inch screen sizes for the OLED iPad Pro models with potentially slimmed-down bezels rather than an overall change in the size of the device.
At the current time, Apple sells a 12.9-inch mini-LED iPad Pro and an 11-inch iPad Pro with a traditional LCD display, as mini-LED has continued to be reserved for the higher-end iPad Pro model. With the 2024 update, Apple could return to feature parity between the two iPad Pro models.
There is also a question mark over the launch timing of Apple’s planned new MacBook models with OLED displays. Both of today’s reports suggest new OLED 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will arrive in 2026. However, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports that a new MacBook Pro with OLED display could be coming in 2025, and this could also be the first touchscreen Mac.
Separately, Young says Apple is readying a 13-inch MacBook Air with OLED display for launch as soon as next year, when the OLED iPad Pro models are expected to arrive. Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also expects the first MacBook with an OLED display to launch next year.
