Chess may be a very old game, but that hasn’t stopped it from changing over the years. This smart chessboard can connect online and move physical pieces on its own, and you can get it for 25% off until 11:59 p.m. PT on January 26.
A high-tech chessboard
Square Off’s Grand Kingdom Set even made an appearance at CES this year. Try a new twist on an old favorite. This set gives you a beautiful, wood-finished board with a secret inside. This Kickstarter-funded chessboard lets you connect to other players online. Join a community of 30 million chess players and test your skills. When your opponent makes a move, the corresponding piece will automatically move across the board. If you need practice, you can also play the built-in AI with 20 difficulty levels.
After a game against the computer or a real player, you can set up a game analysis through the Square Off app. Practice as long as you want, but the battery may only last for up to 15 games before it needs a recharge. But even without a charge, this set is still a beautiful rosewood-colored chess board that comes with two 32 playing pieces.
Your opponents online don’t need to have a Square Off chessboard to play. Those 30 million other plays come from some of the most popular chess destinations online like chess.com and Lichess. Compete with friends or strangers and start working your way toward grand master status.
Save on the CES-featured smart chess set
There’s more than one way to play chess, and this smart board lets you play online, in person, or on your own against a computer. You have until 11:59 p.m. PT on January 26 to get the Square Off Grand Master Set on sale for $369.99 (reg. $499).
Prices subject to change.

World’s oldest person Lucile Randon dies aged 118 after surviving two World Wars and Covid-19
THE world’s oldest person has died aged 118.
Blind French nun Lucile Randon was born in southern France 1904, lived through two World Wars and survived catching Covid.

She passed away peacefully in a nursing home[/caption]
She died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon just a few months after vowing to break the world record for the oldest person ever.
Guinness World Records officially acknowledged her status in April 2022 when Japanese woman Kane Tanaka died.
At the time Lucille – known as Sister Andre – said she wanted to overtake Jeanne Calment, another French woman, who died aged 122 in 1997.
“There is great sadness but it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it’s a liberation,” said David Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home.
Lucille was born in the year New York opened its first subway and when the Tour de France had only been staged once.
She grew up in a Protestant family as the only girl among three brothers, living in the southern town of Ales.
One of her fondest memories was the return of two of her brothers at the end of World War I, she said in an interview on her 116th birthday.
“It was rare, in families, there were usually two dead rather than two alive. They both came back,” she said.
Lucile worked as a governess in Paris – a period she once called the happiest time of her life – for the children of wealthy families.
She converted to Catholicism and was baptised at the age of 26.
Driven by a desire to “go further”, she joined the Daughters of Charity order of nuns at the relatively late age of 41.
Lucille was then assigned to a hospital in Vichy, where she worked for 31 years.
In later life she moved to Toulon along the Mediterranean coast.
Her days in the nursing home were punctuated by prayer, mealtimes and visits from residents and hospice workers.
She also received a steady flow of letters, almost all of which she responded to.
In 2021 she survived catching Covid-19, which infected 81 residents of her nursing home.
Lucille told reporters last year that her work and caring for others had kept her spry.
“People say that work kills, for me work kept me alive, I kept working until I was 108,” she told reporters in April last year in the tearoom of the home.
Although she was blind and relied on a wheelchair, she used to care for other elderly people much younger than herself.
“People should help each other and love each other instead of hating. If we shared all that, things would be a lot better,” she said.
But the Catholic nun had rejected requests for locks of hair or DNA samples, saying that “only the good Lord knows” the secret of her longevity.

Don Cheadle Says People Came Up To Him In Person And Bashed Ocean’s 12
The movie Ocean’s 12 was not as beloved as Ocean’s 11, and people were not afraid to share their opinions when coming across one of its stars, Don Cheadle, on the street. Reflecting on the Ocean’s series as part of a GQ interview, Cheadle recalled how, despite the hate, it was the most fun to film of the three movies.
“The second movie is the one that people will just unabashedly walk up to you and go, ‘Yeah, I hated that one. That one sucked.’ I’m like, ‘Cool, you just said that to my face like I’m not a person. But alright, thank you.’ That was actually, for us, the most fun of all of them,” Cheadle said (via Variety).
Ocean’s 12 takes place in Europe and was shot on location. Cheadle said the production crew rented out the entire sixth floor of the exclusive Russie Hotel in Rome, so the cast and their families could avoid the paparazzi.
