The Destiny 2 Lightfall Veil’s significance has left players scratching their heads, to the extent that even leading content creators such as Byf have weighed in on the campaign’s disjointed narrative flow that forces players to chase something they don’t understand. But, apparently responding to player complaints that the lack of coherency produced a mediocre Lightfall campaign experience in the FPS game, Bungie discloses that players will get answers about the Veil’s significance come Destiny 2 season 21, titled Season of the Deep.

Shortly after Lightfall and Season of Defiance’s launch, Bungie announced details in this week’s news post of an upcoming quest in Season 21, named Season of the Deep. Season of the Deep is the second season of the Lightfall expansion, and it’ll contain a quest set in Neomuna. “Throughout this quest, players will explore the city to learn about the nature of the Veil through Osiris’s research and newly uncovered Ishtar Collective data,” Bungie stated.
The Veil was mentioned in the Season of the Seraph and acknowledged that it would play a significant role in the Lightfall campaign. However, the Veil remains a mystery–much to the frustration of players who expected more answers from Lightfall when nearing the end of the Light and Darkness saga. Bungie seemed to acknowledge that in its blog post, noting, “While we’re just a week into Season of Defiance and we don’t always share future narrative details this far in advance, we feel it’s important to give everyone a preview of a particular quest we’re bringing to Neomuna in Season of the Deep.”
By completing this quest, players will earn new Strand Aspects–each class has two Aspects so far. Bungie also clarified that players will not need to collect additional Strand Meditations, which are currently required to unlock abilities like Fragments. The developer shared the names of the Aspects as well: Hunter’s is called Threaded Specter, Titan will get the Flechette Storm, and Warlock gets The Wanderer. Along with that, players will get a new Legendary hand cannon when they complete the quest.
There I was, kicking my heels after racing through an absurd amount of content the night of the Destiny 2 Weekly Reset – I’d done some main missions, done the social calls to catch up with each of my vendor pals, and was considering flexing my inner masochist in the Crucible to see out the night. Then, just as I swung my chair around and set my sights on Shaxx, a Reddit post caught my eye… “there’s a new Exotic quest called ‘The Variable’” it said.
Reading on, I saw that it was in the EDZ – that’s all I needed to know. I hopped onto my ship and hightailed it back to earth’s sludgiest battleground. Lo and behold, after a few minutes of scouting the area out on my Sparrow, I’d found it… or, at least, the path to it. Strange Vex data blights pinged off my radar, and a quick-and-easy ‘follow the light’ puzzle later, I’d wandered into a new cave in the old Earth area. And it’s here, against all odds, Destiny would redeem itself.
I’ve not been kind about Lightfall. Yes, I think there are some really cool moments, and yes, I have had some great fun playing through the Legend campaign. But overall, it’s a crapshoot – a weird tonal aberration that undoes so much of the work The Witch Queen did in righting the shaky storytelling of this nearly decade-old experience. But Destiny is so much more than its campaigns; the game lives and dies on its seasonal content, and the way it keeps bringing players back into its best-in-class FPS sandbox. And little missions like this newly added NODE.OVRD.AVAL.ON quest are great examples of where Bungie really succeeds.
How do you start the Destiny 2 Vexcalibur exotic glaive quest? The Destiny 2 Vexcalibur is a reward from a secret questline called The Variable that players can access from the EDZ. While it’s not difficult to earn, you still have to find the quest starting location and complete some objectives before beginning the mission to grant access to it. This seasonal exotic will eventually allow players to craft versions that leverage special catalysts to make it extraordinarily powerful, so it’s worth pursuing.
The Destiny 2 Vexcalibur is another exotic on the Destiny 2 Lightfall exotics list. Here’s what you need to know to start the quest in the popular FPS game.
