SEA MONSTER: ‘It was the fiercest face I ever saw!’
The Steamer Dakotah logbook contained an account of an encounter with a 40-foot-long ‘sea monster’ while navigating the ocean in the Far East.
The following newspaper account was placed in the San Francisco Call on July 18, 1909:
SEA MONSTER MAKES GOO GOO EYES AT ASTONISHED MARINER
Captain Ross of the Standard oil company’s steamer Dakotah, which arrived here yesterday from Manila, enjoyed a brief but soul-stirring flirtation on July 11 with a strange fish. On the Dakotah’s log, the “finny flirt’ is described as being 40 feet long and 10 feet wide, with a cavernous mouth and very large eyes.
Captain Ross was on the bridge when his mate called attention to what he thought was a whale on the port bow. When within about 100 feet of the monster they saw that while very like a whale, at a distance, an intimate view showed no resemblance.
“As we came along,” said Captain Ross, “the creature turned its head toward the ship. It was the fiercest face I ever saw. The mouth was like the entrance to a railroad tunnel and the eyes big as locomotive headlights. For all the ferocity of the face, the eyes had a kind look in them.”
“We watched the brute intently. Just as we came almost alongside he gave those eyes a regular goo-goo roll, and sank out of sight. A whale would have gone down head first and waved goodbye with his tail. We never saw this fellow’s tail, and whether he said ‘goodbye’ or ‘come along boys’ with his eyes is more than I can tell. I’ve been to sea for many years but never saw another fish like that one.”
As proof that the fish was all he describes, Captain Ross points to the log which says the encounter took place at latitude 45.30 north, longitude 152 west.
NOTE: Less than one year later, the Dakotah and its Captain Ross ran into a bit of trouble on its way to Japan:
TYPHOON DAMAGES STEAMER DAKOTAH
Standard Oil Company’s Tank Ship Battles With Big Wave in Japanese Seas
Captain and Two Mates Are Washed From Bridge Amid Deck’s Wreckage
IE tank steamer Dakotah, which arrived from Moji yesterday, had a terrible battle with the elements in the Japanese seas on its outward voyage. It was struck by a tidal wave that damaged the ship and nearly washed Captain W. A. Ross and two of his officers overboard. The Dakotah left this port on February 6 laden with a cargo of petroleum for Yokohama. All went well and fine until February 26 when the vessel ran into a typhoon at 9 o’clock that evening, a great tidal wave 50 feet high dashed with tremendous force over the bow of the ship. Captain Ross, with his second master and third officer, was standing on the bridge, which was carried away, and Captain Ross and his companions were swept along the decks they were nearly carried away by the raging waters, but miraculously escaped with bruises, cuts, and scratches.
The steel bulkhead of the wheelhouse, which was one and a half inches thick, was twisted up as though it were so much paper. All the rails were wrecked and everything movable was carried into the sea, leaving the vessel in a pitiable plight. After hard work a temporary steering gear was rigged up and a shelter was erected amidships. The vessel finally limped into Yokohama without further mishap, it discharged its cargo at Yokohama and then all necessary repairs were made. It then proceeded on its way to Moji and took on 3.500 tons of coal for the Western fuel company and started on its way back across the Pacific. Smooth seas and light northwest and southeast winds favored the homecoming voyage. Captain Ross reports that when in latitude 33 degrees 53 minutes north and longitude 36 degrees east, March 28, he sighted a water-logged junk, with a mast above the surface of the water. The Dakotah is owned by the Standard oil company. – San Francisco Call, Volume 107, Number 139, 18 April 1910

Shocking moment ‘landlord lunges at tenant with CIRCULAR SAW after ripping through front door’ in row over unpaid rent
THIS is the shocking moment a landlord appears to lunge at his tenant with a circular saw after ripping through the front door in a rent row.
A terrified Muhammed Raheel captured the crazed moment on Monday lunchtime.
A landlord put an electric saw through the front door of one of his properties[/caption]
He launched it at tenant Muhammed[/caption]
The surgeon started filming from inside his flat in Galway, Ireland, when his landlord started cutting through the door with the power tool.
Unlocking his home to see what madness was happening outside, Muhammed can be heard telling the man “stay back I’m going to call the police“.
The dad-of-two was then forced to take cover when his landlord launched the saw at him as it whirled around.
Pleading for him to stop, Muhammed shouted: “You cannot do this, please.”
Muhammed said if his wife had not helped pull him back in that moment, “anything could have happened”.
He said: “I have been up all night with my wife and our daughters, 1 and 3, awake with worry that he would return with another weapon.”
The horrifying incident, where the landlord can be heard threatening “no matter where you go in this life I will follow you”, is allegedly over unpaid rent.
Muhammed told The Journal his payments had been bouncing back when he tried transferring them across.
However, claims he kept the money to one side for when the landlord contacted him.
He said: “I kept trying every month and put the money aside so I would have it there when he got in touch.
“I didn’t hear from him for months. Then, on March 28, my wife called me from home and said I had to come right away, because someone was drilling outside.”
Muhammed said he had to rush out of the operating room to head home where he found the locks being changed.
Nearly one month on, the landlord took matters into his own hands inflicting the horrifying ordeal on the Raheel family.
Muhammed said the “little” response he got from cops was “painful” and left him fearing for his family’s safety.
He added: “I felt like my family and I were offered no protection, and we were deeply worried he would come back.”
The local force said: “Enquiries are ongoing at this time.”

I’m a gym girl – I used a piece of equipment for a month and saw amazing results – trust the process
ONE gym girl’s fitness transformation has reminding everyone to trust the process when it comes to working out.
Diet and exercise are all parts of a healthy fitness lifestyle but finding your favorite workout makes the process all the more enjoyable.
A TikTok user (@_lilprecious) shared her gym experience with her followers.
She made a point to celebrate all of her milestones, even if they seem small to others.
“Using the stair master for a month and seeing results,” she said in her video, showing off her figure before and after the month-long process.
The after clip showed her with a bit of a flatter stomach as she also showed a clip of her on the machine, sweat seen on her forehead.
She worked out on the stair master for 20 minutes each day and takes 1,000 steps.
“Trust the process.”
Her video received more than 40,000 views and comments from people wondering what her routine was.
“Hello, do you do any other workouts or just the stair master while your [sic] working out?” asked one person.
The user responded: “Yes, I use other machines, if you want me to name those I can. I just always use the stair master before and after my workout.”
Another person asked for the poster’s height, “I see weight falling off of me but not in my stomach area.”
The TikToker said she is five-foot-seven and advised the commenter to start taking pictures and comparing them.
“I didn’t start noticing a change until after a month and a half.”
She also revealed that she doesn’t count calories and instead limits how much she eats in a day.
“Some days I don’t even eat dinner prob like 3 times a week.”
Meanwhile, another gym girl showed off her hourglass figure on glute day – people now call her “Scarlett Johansson.”
Yet another gym girl known as a “certified muscle mommy” showed off her pull-ups, and people think she’s “an actual goddess.”
