Sir Winston Churchill’s statue has also been included[/caption]
Nelson’s Column is also on the Met’s list[/caption]
And Sir Winston Churchill’s statue and Nelson’s Column are also included.
The Met drew up a list of contentious landmarks, including dozens of Westminster memorials in London.
Those to Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi and Earl Mountbatten, who was murdered by the IRA in 1979, are also on the secret Scotland Yard document.
It has been forced to publish the list under Freedom of Information laws.
Notes explaining their decisions claim naval hero Nelson “spent a large part of his career in the Caribbean and developed an affinity with the slave owner”.
And it claims World War Two victor Churchill was accused of “murdering over three million Indians” — a debunked statistic.
They also repeat disputed claims that Earl Mountbatten “oversaw the partition of several provinces which led to the deaths of nearly two million people and the displacement of nearly 20 million” in India.
Curiously, the reasons for including the Cenotaph have been left blank but it has been attacked by protesters in recent years.
Former Cabinet minister Simon Clark said: “There is a particularly bitter irony in thinking there is anything ‘contentious’ about the Cenotaph and our paying lasting respect to all those whose sacrifice means we live in freedom.”
The list’s existence has emerged in a report by the Policy Exchange think-tank which accuses police of all but abandoning Westminster to protesters and anarchist criminals.
Its report, Tarnished Jewel: The Decline Of The Streets Around Parliament, says violent crime has risen two and a half times faster near Parliament than in London as a whole.
It adds: “The rise in offences coincided with the relaxation of rules on protest.”

Nemesis rollercoaster ride at Alton Towers Theme Park closed last year after thrilling Brits since 1994[/caption]
The Staffordshire-based park say they are keeping their lips sealed to maximise enjoyment for customers.
But there are some key giveaways that have been revealed in the plans passed by councillors earlier this week.
The first is that the mysterious ride will be dark green to match the surrounding landscape.
And it will be a whopping 20m (65ft) tall and include a vast 71 metre-long building.
The queue to reach the attraction will be through existing woodland.
Alton Towers has labelled the mysterious plans Project Horizon.
The land the new ride will be built on is currently being used as a maintenance and storage yard, but was once home to The Mouse ride.
Following the plans, Alton Towers boss Francis Jackson said it was “vital” the theme park “refreshes” its offers to remain competitive.
He added: “Ongoing investment in attractions is even more important against the backdrop of the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Mr Jackson stressed that the park was excited to “bring something new to the resort”.
Ben Emery, a local councillor of Staffordshire Moorland District, said colleagues were as clueless about the “highly secretive” plans as the thrill-seeking public.
He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “None of us know what’s going on in there.”
But he stressed the park has “consistently delivered good, impressive, exciting rides that our children and ourselves have loved for many years”.
The park’s massively popular Nemesis rollercoaster shut last year having thrilled Brits since 1994.

Bodies of 18 migrants found dead inside secret compartment of abandoned truck in Bulgaria
EIGHTEEN Afghan migrants, including a child, have suffocated in a truck abandoned in Bulgaria.
The vehicle was transporting timber and carrying illegal migrants hidden in a compartment, the country’s Interior Ministry said on Friday.
The vehicle was found near the village of Lokorsko, around 12 miles from the capital, Sofia.
The drivers, suspected to be human traffickers, had fled the scene.
Senior police chief Atanas Ilkov said one of the four people detained had already been sentenced for human trafficking, and charges would be made once there was sufficient evidence.
Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Bulgarian health minister Assen Medzhidiev has said the survivors were in a precarious condition.
He confirmed: “They have suffered from lack of oxygen, their clothes are wet, they are freezing, and obviously haven’t eaten for days.”
Bulgaria is located on a popular route used by migrants from countries in the Middle East to enter the EU.
The Balkan nation is typically a stepping-stone to richer countries in western Europe, used often by elaborate networks of smugglers.
Last year, more than 150,000 people attempted to cross the border with Turkey, nearly five times higher than the previous year.
It comes three years after Maurice Robinson was convicted of manslaughter for the death of 39 Chinese migrants found in a refrigerated lorry in Essex.
The victims, who had arrived at Purfleet from Zeebrugge in Belgium, had been dead for at least 12 hours before the gruesome discovery.
