Anyone who played, or is even aware of, Elden Ring will tell you that its open world played a major role in making it more approachable for new players. The linear design of FromSoftware’s previous games meant that your progress was always predetermined by the designers.
No matter how long you’d put off a tough boss fight or a trap-laden area, you knew that you needed to be back there and get through it eventually if you wanted to see the next thing. Elden Ring, instead, leaves you to your own devices. So much so that it’s common for players to unintentionally overpower their character by exploring, and turn that boss fight they’d been avoiding into a cakewalk.
That blueprint is partly inspired by Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and you could conceivably see future open-world games from any developer building upon those same principles.
When learning how to deflect in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, practising on the weaker enemies where the consequences aren’t as serious is important. You’ll likely get hit a few times as you learn, perhaps even die, but you must learn the perfect moment to deflect attacks – or parry, riposte, counter, if you like – to make it far in the Soulslike game. It’s also worth experimenting with the types of attacks you can deflect, as each time you successfully do so can make all the difference when taking down monstrous foes.
Of course, you’ve read the tutorial that explains that pressing the dodge button once while holding a movement direction has you deflect an oncoming attack. However, there’s a big difference between knowing how to deflect in principle and executing it consistently, especially against the Wo Long bosses. These are the types of attacks you can deflect and why deflecting is essential to getting far in the RPG game.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Naraka: Bladepoint are getting a little crossover with one another, with things kicking off in the latter game first.
Players have already had a few days to dive into the challenging world of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, the latest title from Nioh developer Team Ninja. But if you’re one such player who just can’t get enough, you might want to head over to Naraka: Bladepoint. Running until March 24, you can unlock “exclusive rewards” in Naraka themed around Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, like a new Battlemark, banner, profile backgrounds, and an “iconic” headwear piece (thanks, GamesRadar).
“Players will only have a limited amount of time to obtain these exclusive rewards before they disappear,” Naraka developer 24 Entertainment explains. “The crossover doesn’t finish there, however. It has been confirmed that Naraka-themed DLC is coming soon to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, with armor sets based on familiar heroes Viper Ning and Tarka Ji.” No date has been set yet, but it also sounds like fans of Naraka have something to look forward to in Wo Long as well.
Want to know where to find Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Dragon’s Vein Crystals and essences? These essential items give you more healing power out of your Dragon’s Cure pot, which acts as Wo Long’s equivalent of the Estus Flask from other Souls games. You must have these upgrades to survive even the simplest of boss battles.
To increase the potential of your Dragon’s Cure pot, you’ll need to seek out the Wo Long Dragon’s Vein crystals and essences. A Dragon’s Vein crystal, when used, will increase the maximum number of charges you have before you next visit a battle flag, this game’s bonfire. The Dragon’s Vein essence, on the other hand, increases how much damage you heal when you activate it. Since it’s a relatively difficult RPG game that has lots in common with the very best games like Dark Souls, you’ll want to heal as much as possible with each charge.

The developers are marketing Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty all wrong. I’m sure the fact that it’s a Soulsborne-like released in the midst of the Great Elden Ring DLC winter is no doubt appealing. As is the fact that Team Ninja, the game’s developers, got Masaaki Yamagiwa — a producer on Bloodborne and the Demon’s Souls remake — to work on the game. The combat is also enticing, familiar enough for Soulsborne fans to get a handle on but just different enough to be interesting and exciting. All are excellent points with which to attract players to the game.
But what they should have done was lead with this simple fact:
Zhao Yun — one of the Five Tiger Generals, my absolute No. 1 favorite character from every Dynasty Warriors game, and my brother…
