Funnyman Aries Spears has been getting everything BUT laughs over the last two weeks.
When not in headlines for allegations of sexual misconduct with minors, the 47-year-old was trending on Twitter for his unprovoked slamming of GRAMMY winner Lizzo for her appearance and public antics.
Likening the diva to the “sh*t emoji” in a recent interview (as we reported here), Spears’ fat-shaming attack found him on the receiving end of the very criticism he wielded against the songstress.
Sunday (August 28), Liz slyly clapped back at this comments while accepting an award at this year’s MTV VMAs.
Just days later, Aries’ interview with VLADTV surfaced in which he addressed her response to the haters. Look inside to see what he said.
As seen in the videos above, Spears took to VLAD TV to address the backlash that ensued after he went viral for dissing Lizzo’s physique. The unapologetic comedian suggested his profession gives him the license to make those types of critical comments.
“This is how this works… When you’re a public figure in the public eye and you do the things that Lizzo does — where you come to a Laker game and you show your whole a** in front of children and families, you are fodder for jokes. And for me, I’m always thinking joke first.”
Later in the chat, Aries asserted the backlash wasn’t wholly representative of the feedback he received for his controversial statement.
“The general feeling was, ‘You said what everybody’s been thinking. We just didn’t say it.’ So I said it. And listen, as far as an artist, Lizzo’s phenomenal, you can’t deny that. But like I said, for me, it’s comedy first.”
And while he believes people think he’s “anti-big girl,” Spears made sure to praise the likes of other plus-sized public figures like Jill Scott and double down on his concern for Lizzo’s health.
“Lizzo’s confidence is commendable and the fact that there’s unity for women in sisterhood in terms of body confidence and beauty and love within thyself, it’s commendable. But don’t let so much celebration and silence detract you from the fact that this sh*t is dangerous, it’s unhealthy. I myself, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol.”
Aries made clear that he even jokes about his own appearance, so no big person is off limits. But when it came to Liz’s VMAs clap back, he wishes that she would’ve given him more attention.
“She never said my name. Now was she talking about me, put the pieces together, more than likely. But she never said my name. But I ain’t the only muth*f*ck* making Lizzo fat jokes. So she was addressing all her haters,” he shared before later stating,“I almost wish she did say my name to really make it specific, but she didn’t say my name.”
