Juanita Bynum is not here for being deemed a hypocrite!
Just days after a clip of the Gospel singer and prophetess preaching against the juxtaposition of “being saved” and listening to secular music flew to viral status on social media (as we reported here), backlash brewed when a video of her dancing to Mary J. Blige‘s 2007 hit ‘Just Fine’ inconveniently resurfaced.
The timing of Bynum’s sermon drew particular attention as many took it as a subtle dig against Twinkie Clark, the lead singer of the legendary Gospel quartet The Clark Sisters, who is currently embroiled in controversy for allowing their song ‘Center of Thy Will’ to serve as the center of Beyonce‘s profanity-laden ‘Renaissance’ hit ‘Church Girl.’
In response to critics who have branded her message hypocritical, Juanita took to the pulpit to address the claim head-on.
During a sermon broadcast live from YouTube Tuesday (August 23), the 63-year-old hit back at detractors who slammed her for saying one can’t be saved and listen to secular music.
Starting her response to the critics at the video’s 52-minute mark, Bynum began by defining what “secular” music entails before later addressing the MJB visual.
“What y’all think about the fact she was dancing to Mary J. Blige,” she said at the video’s 59:22 timestamp. “First of all, I don’t justify that. The words [of the song] are not sinful and not provocative, but nevertheless it was a wait, it was three years ago, and when you live in the presence of the Lord for a year-and-a-half and you lock yourself in church and you get on your face before God and the Lord began to deal with you and you get in the presence of the Lord, you don’t get up the same.”
Juanita admitted the clip did not show her in the best light, but assured her listeners she repented and has been delivered from the desire to get down to MJB.
“We all got sloppy and then we got sloppier, some of us, when the pandemic came. But I had an encounter with God in this building on this very floor,” she said. “When I laid in His presence and He visited me, I got up different. I got up saying, ‘God deliver me again’ and ‘God save me again.’”
Before ending her discussion on the matter, Bynum made clear she may not have been the best representative of Christ during her Blige-inspired boogie but that doesn’t mean she committed a sin.
“Do I feel like I sinned? No. But it was a wait and was a stumbling block for somebody,” she said. “The Lord had to catch me and correct me and tell me, ‘I called you to be a prophet. I didn’t call you to dance down the aisle.’”
