Stories about mysterious ground circles, none of which come close to explaining the elaborate crop circles seen in the UK and elsewhere for decades. The first deals with a Russian tank going around in circles after being hit by Ukrainian fire and killing the crew. The poorly formed “crop circle” doesn’t come close to “solving the ever-interesting debate on how crop circles are formed,” this story notwithstanding. The second story claims that the Secrets of Namibia’s Fairy Circles Demystified: Plants Self-Organize. “Scientists have puzzled over the origin of Namibia’s fairy circles for nearly half a century.” Termites were thought responsible, but now scientists have found that “plant water stress” is the cause of the “fairy circles,” the best example of which can be seen in this video: Demystifying the secrets of Namibia’s fairy circles: part II (35 days after rainfall). And then there is The New York Times story from a few months back, reporting that Crop Circles Were Made by Supernatural Forces. Named Doug and Dave. Could these two pranksters and their imitators be responsible for all the crop circles seen around the world since the 1980s? (PH)
