How ‘Homestar Runner’ Re-Emerged After the End of Flash
On the same day we received a demo of a song that John Linnell from They Might Be Giants recorded for a Strong Bad Email and a full-size working Tom Servo puppet from Jim Mallon from Mystery Science Theater 3000…. The Homestar references in the Buffy and Angel finales forever ago were huge. And there was this picture of Joss Whedon in a Strong Bad shirt from around that time that someone sent us that we couldn’t believe. Years later, a photo of Geddy Lee from Rush wearing a Strong Bad hat on stage circulated which similarly freaked us out. We have no idea if he knew what Strong Bad was, but our dumb animal character was on his head while he probably shredded ‘Working Man’ so I’ll take it!
After a mutli-year hiatus starting around 2009, the site has only been updating sporadically — and some worried that the end of Flash also meant the end of the Flash-based cartoon and its web site altogether. But on the day Flash Player was officially discontinued — December 31st, 2020 — a “post-Flash update” appeared at HomestarRunner.com:
What happened our website? Flash is finally dead-dead-dead so something drastic had to be done so people could still watch their favorite cartoons and sbemails with super-compressed mp3 audio and hidden clicky-clicky easter eggs…!
[O]nce you click “come on in,” you’ll find yourself in familiar territory thanks to the Ruffle Project. It emulates Flash in such a way that all browsers and devices can finally play our cartoons and even some games…. Your favorite easter eggs are still hidden and now you can even choose to watch a YouTube version if there is one.
Keep in mind, Ruffle is still in development so not everything works perfectly. Games made after, say 2007, will probably be pretty janky but Ruffle plans on ulitmately supporting those too one day. And any cartoons with video elements in them (Puppet Jams, death metal) will just show you an empy box where the video should be. But hang in there and one day everything will be just like it was that summer when we got free cable somehow and Grandma still lived in the spare bedroom.
And since then, new content has quietly been appearing at HomestarRunner.com. (Most recently, Thursday the site added a teaser for an upcoming Halloween video.)
The Homestar Runner wiki is tracking this year’s new content, which includes:
Strong Bad livestreaming his play of a text adventure (titled “Disk 4 of 12 — Vampire’s Castle”) on September 19thStrong Sad streaming a demo of the expando deck for Trogdor!! The Board Game (July 2)A Twitch parody in which Strong Bad livestreams a speedrun on a horrific beef-themed game (titled “Strong-Play: Marzipan Beef Reverser”) on April 25thA new Strong Bad Email on April 1st
And past videos are now also being uploaded on the site’s official YouTube channel.

iPhone 14 Pro Tidbits: New White Box, Brighter True Tone Flash, No mmWave Expansion, and More
Beyond the headlining features, there are more minor changes and newsworthy aspects of the new iPhones, and we’ve rounded up six below.
New White Box
As rumored, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max ship in an all-white box, unlike previous high-end “Pro” iPhones, which shipped in a darker gray box. Despite the new box color, no other aspects of the unboxing experience for the new iPhones are believed to have changed.
Brighter True Tone Flash
Like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature an updated True Tone flash that, in certain conditions, can be up to two times brighter than previous generations.
“The new Adaptive True Tone flash adjusts the pattern and intensity of nine LEDs depending on the focal length of the photo, so your subject always appears in the best light,” Apple says on its website. Using a combination of the new flash, larger lenses, and more advanced image processing, users can get up to 2x better low-light photos on the Main camera and up to 3x better low-light photos on the Ultra Wide camera.
Dynamic Island is Actually Touchable
While at first glance you may think that the Dynamic Island is only visually appealing to show relevant information with cool animations, it’s actually a fully interactive part of the display that you can tap. For example, as shown in a brief hands-on video on Twitter, tapping the Dynamic Island when music is playing opens up the Music app. If a timer is running, tapping the Dynamic Island brings up a new UI at the top of the display to show the time remaining and relevant controls.
As noted by Engadget‘s hands-on review with the iPhone 14 Pro, touching the Dynamic Island when nothing is happening results in a small stretching animation for the pill shape and subtle vibration.
Cinematic Mode Improvements
Introduced with the iPhone 13 series, Cinematic Mode allows iPhone users to record videos of subjects while subtly blurring the background. With the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple is improving Cinematic Mode to now support 4K HDR at 24FPS and 30FPS. Like on past models, users can edit the focus of a subject after they’ve recorded the video in the Photos app.
Improved Sensors for Car Crash Detection
With all models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro and the new Apple Watch models, Apple has built car crash detection into its devices. The new feature can detect if a user has been part of a car crash using a wide range of improved sensors. On the iPhone 14 models, a new high g-force accelerometer can detect accelerations or decelerations up to 256 Gs. Car crash detection also uses the barometer to detect changes in pressure, such as those caused by an airbag, and more sensitive microphones that can detect extreme sound while a user is driving.
No mmWave Expansion
mmWave versions of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are still limited to the United States, two years after the first 5G iPhone. mmWave 5G is a faster standard of 5G and requires an additional antenna. mmWave iPhones have only been available in the United States since the first 5G-enabled models in 2020 and have not expanded to other countries, including Canada or European countries.

You Have To Burn The Rope and more classic Flash games are playable in your browser again
Many archival and emulation projects are underway to preserve the wonderful history of Flash games, and best of all are those which try to recreate the original experience: just clicking a link then playing a game inside your browser. Now one unofficial Flash Player emulator is adding support for more classic games, ones made in the (relatively) newfangled ActionScript 3 language. So you can party like it’s 2008 by heading over to Newgrounds and playing You Have To Burn The Rope again, as well as Wonderputt and a handful of others.

The Flash May Be In Jeopardy As Warner Bros. Debates Release Due Ezra Miller’s Troubles – Report
Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly weighing different strategies for its The Flash film as star Ezra Miller has become increasingly snared in legal trouble and multiple incidents including disorderly conduct and harassment. The film isn’t scheduled to arrive in theaters until June 23, 2023–but The Hollywood Reporter says there are three possible scenarios that may change the film’s fate.
The most drastic plan being considered would be shelving the film completely, should Miller’s situation further deteriorate. As a $200 million film, it would be a costly though as of very recently not unprecedented move–Warner Bros. Discovery unceremoniously shelved Batgirl, deep in post-production earlier this month. Because Miller is reportedly in nearly every scene of the movie, and plays multiple characters in it, reshoots with another actor is not a realistic possibility.
