MultiVersus Review: A Super Smash Hit
MultiVersus frames itself as the ultimate crossover fighter, a sort of “dream come true” scenario where anyone can face off against anyone else. It’s a bold proclamation challenging the reign of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a game that features an unmatched all-star cast of video game characters duking it out. Many pretenders to that throne have come and gone but, surprisingly, MultiVersus makes a compelling claim. The game, which is in open public beta, has strong fundamentals, charm, and attention to detail that Smash clones that came before sorely lacked, making it one of the best platform fighting games ever made.
MultiVersus follows the basic Smash Bros format: up to four players meet on a single battlefield and fight it out, with the goal of increasing damage enough to knock their opponents out of bounds. The first team to score four knockouts in a match–or the first fighter to score two knockouts in a 1v1 match–wins. So far, so Smash. However, MultiVersus puts far more emphasis on the 2v2 format, quickly establishing its own identity in the process.
Mechanically, every fighter on the roster has moves that negatively affect opponents, while simultaneously having positive effects on teammates. For example, whenever Shaggy charges to full power–a brilliant use of the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme–his partner also receives a power bump for their next attack. One of Wonder Woman’s special attacks gives her a layer of special armor for added defense, and if she’s close enough to her partner, she’ll immediately jump to them and give them the buff too. This idea of teamwork and synergy being baked into the fundamentals of MultiVersus is a fresh and welcome change to the format, with no two matches ever feeling the same. The partner dynamic also strengthens the 2v2 mode, making it feel like the core format developers intend people to play.
MultiVersus players are making a stunning Daffy Duck concept character
With any new game with a colourful roster of guest characters, fans of MultiVersus have been picking out their personal favourites they’d like to see make it to the popular platform fighter. Some, however, are bringing their passion to a whole other level with fan made animations and custom calling cards for a particular Looney classic: Daffy Duck.
This all started thanks to one animator – Jordan Rutter. A junior animator at Playtonic Games, he started a side project creating a character concept for Daffy Duck at the tail end of July. From there, clips of combos, aerials, and special moves all inspired by classic moments from the lovable duck were quickly published online, gaining traction among the community.
This excellent animation work in turn inspired some more creative juices to get flowing. Technical designer Dylan Micheli stepped up to the digital plate with their own Daffy work – this time a custom calling card for the character that you’d see in game, with all of his conceptual special moves included!
MultiVersus has a Velma x Jake combo that is straight up broken
MultiVersus has been out for some time now, with thousands of players bashing their heads together trying to find out the best and most busted strategies to score a win online. Initial strong picks like Taz and Bugs Bunny have been discovered and patched, but the latest peak of competitive jank comes from an unlikely combo: Jake the Dog and Velma.
Showcased perfectly by a short Twitter clip from user LeviathanMVS, this combo allows players to quickly shoot off numerous hard to avoid projectiles from the pair. This, as you can imagine, chunks enemies for tons of damage struggle free.
Here’s how it works. You first start with Velma’s Spread the Knowledge (down special attack) which has her throw a book towards her ally. If it hits, both Velma and her ally gain a massive burst of cooldown reduction! This at the start of the match, when your teammate is right next to you, is a cakewalk to land.
The best MultiVersus players in the world are playing the same character
MultiVersus is ahead of the curve tech-wise on PS5
There’s a lot to love with MultiVersus. Whether it’s the cool cast of characters, the player-friendly approach to live service, or the healthy dollop of wackiness you really kind of need in this kind of light-hearted title. But for those who care about the performance of the games they play, or have a competitive streak, you’ll be happy to hear that MultiVersus is leading the pack on the technical side too!
This was first discovered by Twitter user Nigel Woodall, a reputable input lag tester – who posted their discoveries online. The most crucial for players is an average input lag delay of 31.47 milliseconds on the PS5, which is less than two frames of delay at 60 FPS.
Okay, so what does this actually mean? Well, in the simplest terms, it means that when you press a button on the PS5 while mashing away at MultiVersus, your move comes out fast. Hella fast, actually. Faster than any other fighting game on the platform right now by at least two frames.
Multiversus leak points to Stranger Things fighter… leak
A load of new Multiversus leaks points to multiple upcoming fighters, including the Smash Bros style fighting game‘s first non-Warner Bros crossover – a Multiversus Stranger Things fighter collab. How was this leaked? Thanks to another leak, in fact.
Now that the game is actually, out Multiversus leaks pointing to skins such as LeBron James Robin and a Wonder Woman movie skin have already been datamined – but more exciting are the potential new fighters. According to leakers such as Mvsleaks, files mention fighters such as Raven and Robin proper from Teen Titans, Scooby-Doo (of course), Gizmo and Stripe from Gremlins, Daenerys from Game of Thrones, Beetlejuice, and more.
However, the most intriguing listed is Eleven from Stranger Things, which – if accurate – would be the first non-Warner Bros property to appear in Multiversus, since the show is owned by Netflix. There’s even a datamined voice line from Raven, which definitely seems to be the DC hero’s usual actor Tara Strong (who also voices Harley Quinn in the game), which directly mentions fighting with Eleven.

MultiVersus lacks that Nintendo polish, but it’s still a slick Smash Bros-like in open beta
Having given the MultiVersus closed beta a whirl around a month ago, I thought it was a free-to-play Smash Bros-like that came out swinging. And now I’ve returned to the open beta phase of the multiverse where Bugs Bunny and Taz The Tazmanian Devil are joined by… Lebron James?! Honestly, my thoughts remain largely unchanged – which is a good thing! It’s a fun free-to-play fighter that iterates on the Smash formula but can’t quite emulate its predecessor’s polish.
